Using a template for cab sides

Hey all,

I have started on a new cab that I am having difficulty with and want you opinion. I have a crappy jigsaw and my 3/4" MDF first side panel looks like crap with blade wander and all. I am thinking that it would be far easier to make a template out of a piece of 1/4' ply and use my router to cut the panels from that. I am really not looking to buy a new jigsaw and I think it would be easier to make a ply template and get that shaped good. Thoughts?

Well depending on the style of cab you are making you may be able to buy one. The arcade boneyard sells templates that you can trace with a router. Otherwise if you are using a jigsaw for your sides just take your time (use a sharp blade) and move slowly. Then trace that side with a router.

Not much too add other than templates and routers work great. I started cutting my wood last weekend and basically got one side done and then used that as a template for my router; Worked great.

I can't tell if it my lack skill or my jigsaw (or both) but I also have a heck of a time getting it to not wander. So, I tend to not use it very much. Not sure what is available in your area, but maybe it would be worth it to buy or rent a circular saw and just use the jig saw to complete any cuts/spots that the circular saw cannot complete..? I find that if I clamp a "fence" to what I'm cutting I can get very good results with a circular saw, for straight cuts of course.

100% go with a template/router combo. Spend time on your template and get it just right. Use your router to cut 2 identical sides and you'll be all set. I did this for my last build and it just doesn't get any easier. It's foolproof, IMO.

What was your plywood thickness? I am thinking 3/8".
