Mame + xpadder or key2joy?

Hi everyone,

   I am using MameUIFX and when i do the save button, it asks for a slot to save.  I know you have to enter a letter on the keyboard.  But xpadder or joy2key do not seem to work within MAME.

Any other ideas on how to save?
