Perhaps you can mount some wood under the hand rest area to strengthen the plastic, however, looks like alot of contours.
Or build a custom cp that sits on where the hand rest area and over hangs the sides for more controls.
Or can the hand rest area just be replaced with some mdf to create a cp to fit the hand rest area? Router the front of the wood for a smooth transition into the speaker cover.

I'd suggest leaving it.  Presuming everything works, you have a nice touchscreen that can play jukebox and bejeweled.  Show the weather even.

You wouldn't turn an ATM into an arcade machine?

If you are still compelled to mame it, then find where the shelf disassembles from the machine and replace it with metal or wood.

So you've taken into account the above recommendations for leaving the station alone and still want to dig in, fair enough, to each their own.

Selfie has an amazing thread on drilling plastic here - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,119165.0.html  READ IT.

Depending on your button, you're looking at the standard 1.125" bit.  Forstner and Spade would work but remember, you need to go slow and you need to "Shave" the plastic, not drill it.  I would get some test plastic and get a feel down for what you are doing.

Just a couple of thought for mounting..

There are probably other options but here are a couple off the top of my head specifically for the joystick:

1. You can drill through the panel and bolt directly to it.
2. You can use the proper adhesive and glue it underneath.
3. (I hope I can describe this properly) Since plastic/acrylic tend to bond very well with each other, you can cut a plastic "plate" (or two) the same size as the joystick plate. Put some holes in the plastic plate (where the bolts would go) and place/glue nuts into the holes. Obviously if you can make the holes hex shaped like the nuts there is less chance of movement. Alternatively, you can use a t-nut or threaded inserts. Then bond the plastic to the CP and attach joystick to the plate.

I used method #3 on a mini acrylic cab I made and it is rock solid.
