OK so the assclown who had the house before me decides to build a basement wall across the face of the furnace access panel. We call him out on it and he throws in an access panel before close of escrow .

But.... He realizes that not only has he put drywall across the front of the furnace but a stud too. So he builds an opening that only went up to the edge of the stud making it useless.

I was installing a Nest thermostat over the weekend and noticed that the 24vac line from the furnace is dead. So I go down to check the fuse on the control board and sure enough I couldn't get the access panel off because this guys ---smurfy--- job still had the stud running down the right hand side of the face of the furnace.

So, I bust out the Hilti and rip that ---smurf--- up and down until the stud falls out (you can see the cut stud in the photo). Pull the panel find the 3A blade for the 24vac line and sure enough it was blown.

New fuse. HVAC and Nest working perfectly. Crack a beer and drink a toast to the power tool gods.

You had my sympathy right up to the point that I saw your thermostat.  It was then I realized the fuse was blown and service panel were made inaccessible for good reason.   What you got there is a HAL 9000 sociopathic thermostat.  One day you'll try to adjust the temperature of your home and it will respond "I'm sorry Saint Maximus, I can't do that."

Sheesh. I hate it when I discover problems like that 1. I'm afraid my frustration would have made me reach for a chain saw...or a wrecking ball.

What kind of a dumbass walls in the furnace?  Does he think that furnace will never fail or get old?

Or that it couldn't possibly start a fire closed up inside of a wall?  Did he at least put a firestop at the top of that enclosure?  I'm guessing no...

Nope no fire stop, just the dumbest ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- you ever saw. The furnace is accessible from the back as the other side of the wall is a dirt room, but the side with the actual access panel was of course the one right up against the wall - pretty special.

I was definitely cursing, shouting and maybe cackling as I tore through that wall with the Rabid Shark that is my C-Saw, teetering on a step stool with the saw sideways above my head, drywall dust flying everywhere while screaming 'MEDICATION TIME!!!!!'

Yeaaaaaaaaaah... you do know hand saws are good in awkward spots like that... pretty hard to slip off that stool and cut your balls off with a handsaw.

Basically, PBJ needed to cut a panel for his rape-themed bartop (yes, you read that right). Since he didn't have a sawhorse nearby, he propped the board on his leg and started cutting. Something shifted, and he felt something dangerously close to his leg. He tossed everything and looked down, noticing that he had a nice long gash in his Jordache jeans (or some other brand- he made a big deal out of the fact that they were designer). An inch deeper and to the left and he would have been PinballJennifer.
