Sony PC-701? (Transcoder Replacement?)
« on: July 26, 2013, 12:57:17 pm »
Hey Monitor/Video; I just had a quick inquiry.

In regards to the 'Profeel' monitors and other 80's Crts that Sony put out with the 34 pin RGB out, if I were to purchase something like the Sony PC-701 (which was an RGB interface that outputs CGA or EGA  at 640 x 200 or 640 x 350) would the device nullify any need for an RGB transcoder (as well as much of the fiddling that goes with getting them to properly output on an old Sony TV)?

I'm really interested in buying this so it might make the connection to something like the Arcade VGA 3000 possible without having to mess with the 34 pin out and a transcoder (seeing as this device was taylored to this specific CRT model), but I'm uncertain whether or not the CGA/EGA output would support something like a VGA card.

Do you have an EGA monitor or something that this would work with then?  If memory serves me those require a very specific interfaceto work with and unless you have one then they're not worth the money.

Besides an arcade monitor is NTSC(320x240@15khz)

Well, the adapter was created for the XBR series TVs; they have specific multi 34 pin RGB outs on the back, like floppy disk connectors, to output from an CGA/EGA input onolder RGB microcoputers.

There's two cables on the interface: one on to the TV (34 multi pin) and another to the CGA cable (an 8 pin out din, I believe).  Does this means that the PC-701 would output 15Khz, just at a different resolution, from either a VGA to CGA card, ArcadeVGA 3000, or just any RGB signal that had an 8 pin din connector on it?

Thanks for the help, too.  I've been searching for something like this forever but I also don't have too much cash to blow at the moment

Actually the connector to the CGA is a DE9 male, I believe.
