Rotary Joysticks possible on Xbox? (Updated, I think I have it!)
« on: November 14, 2006, 12:37:35 pm »
I have a modded Xbox with Ikari Warriors ROM. Can I get Rotary Joystics to work on it?

Okay I have Mame on my Xbox, but some of my most beloved games, such as Ikari Warriors, Victory Road, etc, use a rotary joystick. I use them on my upright Mame cab, but I have never played them on my big honkin' T.V. wich, would be cool.

I will list what I think I can do, and you guys let me know if I am off in Wonderland, or if I am on the right track.

I have an X-Arcade controller in a "Streetfighter" setup with Xbox controller adapter on it.

http://www.x-arcade.com/two-player.shtml

I have two spare 12 position rotary joysticks designed for above mentioned games.

http://www.retroblast.com/reviews/joysticks/happrotary.html

I want to purchase Ultimarc's Rotary Stick to USB connector.

http://www.ultimarc.com/rotary.html

And a USB to XBox controller, adapter.

http://www.jandaman.com/games.mvc?p=usbxbo...egory_code=XBOX

The procedure will be to:

1. Swap out the standard joysticks in the X-Arcade control panel with the Happs Rotary Joysticks.
2. Drill a small hole out the back of the X-Arcade control panel for the USB cable.
3. Attach new sticks to the Ultimarc Rotary Stick to USB connector.
4. Connect the USB cable to the USB to XBox adapter, then to the XBox Player1.
5. Connect the X-Arcade's XBox controller adapter to the Xbox Player 2. (Because the buttons still need to be connected.

What do you think? Is there an easier way to do this? A better way?

The XBOX will most likely NOT recognize the ultimarc rotary interface.

What I would do is get this

http://ca.geocities.com/druins22@rogers.com/ls30/

and instead of hooking it up to an ipac or similar, hook it to a couple of buttons of the xarcade.  It would probably be wise to put some sort of switch in there so you can turn the feature off when you don't want it...
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

The Ultimarc Rotary-to-USB board emulated a keyboard, and my XBox has a soft-mod that plays ball with USB keyboards, mice, and can even use an Iomega device as replacement memory, so I am not sure where the breakdown would be.

My worry is buttons going to one controller port and sticks to another, but being Mame, I should be able to work around.

I have two of druin's boards in play right now. One in my upright Gondomania cab (scratch built) and another in a single player Franken-panel for my PC. They work pretty good too.

All of my rotary sticks look too deep to fit in the X-Arcade without extending the chassis' debth.

Ikari warriors was hacked to allow it to play without rotary sticks. Check coinops5.

Yeah I know, but thanks for the reply.

I'm wondering if CoinOPs supports real rotary sticks in an arcade cabinet?

Why not use KADE to control your rotary sticks?
I have modded my Xarcade with KADE to install my spinner, player one joy and buttons.

Before I just used player 1 joy with button 7 as left and button 8 as right with button 6/7 for fire and nade.

Worked for me

You'd be better to ask over there.

degenatron did  buy a rotary stick just to code the functions into kade, but that was for the PC, not sure how it would work with the xbox and  then of course you would have to change the controls config for coinops.

It would work like a mouse does in XBMC and MameOX, just map the analogue inputs with Dial.

I have the KADE and a mouse handy and will try it out in a couple of days.

Any excuse to play Ikari Warriors.   ;D
