sort of. the term is not somewhat literal. From what i can remember off-hand, you can file for personal bankruptcy and state medical as one of the reasons for filing. Some people and institutions have debated whether medical is a legit enough response to file.

Probably will have to.  I dont think I could pay that off in 2 lifetimes.   Especially since they just sent me
another bill, for $12,500.   I also had an er visit for something else last year, and still own $1200 +  a $300  ambulance ride, that was all of a 4min drive.. from a  'Volunteer'  ambulance service.

Got $3000 owed to the Credit card people, and maybe $8000 left on the minivan.

Got a filling that dropped about of my tooth about 4months ago, but cant afford to get it filled.  Got at least
3 teeth that need repair..   and lost my two front teeth about half a year ago(?).  Root canal cracked due to needing a min of $10,000 worth of straightening and jaw surgery, to stop the teeth crowding... Well, the infection spread to the other front tooth.  Both needed to be pulled by an oral surgeon for nearly $400 a piece.

Dentist quoted me $3000 for a partial...  started making the molds.. then after xrays, said I needed $2000 more in dental work before he would do the partial.  I coudnt justify $5k that I didnt have..  on a partial that would probably break down, or other teeth fail, before I even finish paying the bill off.   Furthermore, the interest free program I had with Care Credit, only went up to like $3000.  (and at the time, I was still paying on previous dental work.. due to my allergens making my teeth weak and susceptible to cavities.  In previous 3yrs, I think I dropped down $7000 to my former dentist.  Maybe more.   Its probably partially why hes retired early...   :'( )

So, Im out about $300 for the mold that never got used, plus the cost of 2 visits, and the xrays... and still have missing teeth.

Luckily I had found a way to make fakes out of friendly plastic, and keep them in with denture cream.  Only problem is.. they have nothing to support them... so they dont stay in if I try to eat with them in.  It also takes about 3hrs of efforts to make a new pair.  Constant re-fitting, and precision sculpting...   Its a real problem if they get broken or lost.  (which happened once already.  I finished a new pair literally minutes before having to go to work)

In addition to losing 2 weeks of pay while out of work... without compensation (nor healthcare) ...
Was laid off for a few at Christmas,  ..and though my wage per hour is the best Id ever had at this new job, at my 'Temp - Contractor'   position....  They cut back hours very badly up until just recently.  I have little certainty, since Im a contractor of a contractor.

Before this I was working for a friends computer business.   Im only a low-level tech, so its not easy to just get a job in this field.  Well, he wasnt keeping good track of things with billing... and or billing too slow..  so I was often unpaid for several weeks.   He still owes me a bit over $3000.  About 3 months worth of work.  I get a few hundred from him every few months... so it will be like 5 more yrs before we are settled.

The worst part is that my food expenses are through the roof, as anything without soy, egg, dairy, or wheat... is about 5 to 10x more expensive.  I cant buy cheap, or fast food... so have to hand make every meal from scratch, every day.

The only saving grace has been reduce rent, staying at grandmothers house.  But shes planning to sell it in 2yrs or less..   So expenses will go up drastically.

On the good side, hours at work have finally started to pick up.   lol   But even if I had fulltime hours, hired on as a fulltime employee... I dont know if these bills could realistically be paid off.

I really dont want to somehow slip into social services.   As If you could even get in there.. you could never get off it.
I also dont think they would give me enough for my special diet needs either.

I also not sure I want to claim bankruptcy... as if I do, my good credit may be destroyed.  Making it nearly impossible to get another vehicle, or anything else...

Ahh well, Im off to work now.    At least I still have a job.

If you don't have insurance through work and you aren't pullin in a ton of money, then there would probably be some state subsidized insurance programs you probably would qualify for. Most states do in order to prevent exactly the medical debt you are talking about.

The problem is that just before the incident, I made a decent paycheck.   The lady at the Medicade or medicare ?  office said I was like over by $100.
Im still not sure about this, as the paperwork rejection they sent, had no financial information on it at all.  ugg.

But the state does not seem to consider things like this.  They dont care if your deep in the red.  If you have higher expenses.  Or even your past history of average earnings.

I also noticed that the bill also charged me $3000 for self pay... IE, for not having insurance.

If I could afford insurance, Id have had it.

A general thought of mine: circumstances like this are certainly reasons not to have a family and frivolous debt.

You are in NY right? Did you check out Healthy NY? It is for adults who make too much to qualify for medicaid. If you are a 100 over on medicaid, I bet you could get on Healthy NY. At least that is what they say on their website.

http://www.healthfirstny.org/how-does-healthy-ny-compare-medicaid-family-health-plus-and-child-health-plus.html

You should totally check them out. Who knows, they might even have a program for retro expenses, and even if not, you might be able to get in to get your teeth covered on future expenses.

Sounds like you need a vacation to the UK.

Jump on a plane and land in Manchester or Liverpool.  Say you are here for a short holiday.

While you are here you can get all your teeth fixed, and maybe seek asylum.

Don't laugh.

Other needy souls from parts of the globe is doing it.    :lol

I've done it, the overseas dental part. It was more of a case of that I was already going abroad anyway, but my dental expense was $30 without insurance, and that included all the pain medication for the 5 days after. Considering that I paid $1400 for a round trip flight, it was still in for waaay cheaper than the $3000 something my dentist quoted me here.

Next time I have expensive dental work to do, I am going overseas and making it a dental vacation.

Oh goodnight in Kentucky, I should have known better than to click. I should have known. That's incredibly gnarly, but I'm glad you're getting better. If I saw that happen on my abdomen my reaction would go something like, "ohmygawshfortheloveofearthkillmenow"
