Simulations of un-MAME-ed arcade games?
« on: March 29, 2013, 05:25:00 pm »
Thanks forums like this one, I got a simulation of Pong (from "Atari's Greatest Hits" for PC) running through my MAME wheel in HyperSpin on my MAME cabinet.  Maybe I'm in the minority on this since I think I'm older than the average MAME user (I'm 45), but now I keep wondering what other un-MAME-ed games might be available via simulation rather than emulation.  (I'd absolutely love to play Stunt Cycle, for instance.)  Anyone know of any?

There's D.I.C.E.

I've also done a couple ancient penny arcade e.m. games which are available on my site.

Most of the e.m. hybrids are in mame right now, they just don't work for obvious reasons.

I run Pong from MisfitMame .127, but when I looked for a nice Computer Space that would look and work well in an arcade cabinet, I couldn't find one.

Here is how I run Pong from my normal Mame folder (with MisfitMAME)
Code: [Select]
c:\arcade\MIS127H\mis127.exe -skip_gameinfo -cheat pong -inipath c:\arcade\MIS127H
 :)

Pong is actually in MAME now, it has been for a while.  And it's a quite accurate representation of it without being slow like D.I.C.E.

I didn't know Pong was back in MAME.  Thanks!  I'll give it a try!  One question though - not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I thought Pong was removed from MAME quite a while ago because it was a simulation, not an emulation.  What changed?

I haven't tried D.I.C.E. because from what I read it doesn't look as though it would be that playable on my non-state-of-the-art PC (or even on a state-of-the-art PC for that matter) AND because for the life of me I can't find any roms for it.  I guess I was just hoping there was some commercial (or even homebrew) simulation of Stunt Cycle in particular I didn't know about.

With all the great newer games available in MAME, I guess I have to laugh at myself for wanting to play these old games so badly (Stunt Cycle in particular).  I guess it's really true that you always want what you can't have.

There are no roms for dice... Simulations are included with the dice emulator.

The old pong driver in mame was basically somebody making a homebrew pong... it wasn't very accurate at all.  The new one is based upon original schematics, replacing analog components with their digital (and possible to emulate) equivelents... 555 timers, voltage dividers, ect....

Thanks for the replies, everyone.  I tried Pong in the latest MAME and while it was really cool to see - something I thought I would never see - it ran very, very slowly on my PC.  Pong in DICE was even worse, it ran at a blistering one frame per second at best, so I imagine Stunt Cycle wouldn't run well either (Stunt Cycle isn't included in DICE as far as I can tell).  Not complaining, just resigning myself to my MAME cab having (for now) a PC simulation of Pong rather than an emulation (and no Stunt Cycle at all).

You might want to try pong in mame again.  This is counter intuitive, but the game actually runs faster if auto-frameskip is turned off.  Also in the slider control menu, there is an option to run the game at 30 fps instead of 60.
