Project McP mini update 12-8-04
« on: September 27, 2004, 09:10:02 pm »
Well after debating for a year or two I finally became a full fledge member of the BYOC club :DI had a hard time deciding if I should build a cabinet from scratch or buy a kit.It ended up I found a Konami GI Joe cabinet on craigslist for 100$.The cabinet is pretty worn and needs alot of work but amazing the game works everything lit up even the marquee light. It also has a 25inch wells garder k7000 monitor that works almost perfect except a smal wavy spot at top of screen.Pretty sure a cap kit will fix this.Im going to buy an arcade vga video card, but im a little confused if I should use J-Pac or use the premade wire that Ultimarc sells to connect the pc to monitor? The front panel has to be replaced, unfortunately this cabinet was made from particle board and the front panel with the coin door was just plywood with contact paper over that??Really cheaply made but still I think this will make a nice cabinetGoing to try and copy Pedro Silvas swing out door (very nice work Pedro). So far ive pretty much just been preparing it for painting it.Today im just going to give you the pics the former owner sent that made me say, "mine".More to come.... ;D

The beat up front panel with just contact paper over plywood with a few dings on molding.Going to use one coindoor in middle of new front panel to save space inside.

SAVE that classic!!!!  ;)

Great cabinet to MAME. Do your work in the frontend to make that thing looke great for painting. Use bondo or woodfill and you won't regret the time you spend before painting. Keep us updated...

Looks eerily similar to my cab. :)  Mine was a conversion cabinet (could have been many things) that I just re-did.  Good luck with it.  It is a very good cabinet to mame.

Another small update, been working on getting it ready to paint and designing control panel. Here's a pic of the front panel after I ripped off the contact paper. Not sure why they used such a cheap peice of wood for front panel but boy does that sucker have to go...

So here we have the cabinet on its back its sitting on my trusty hand truck :o I took off the old glides or stands that were bent beyond repair, removed the wood blocks they were mounted into.As you can see the sides are pretty chewed up.Here is a shot of one of the sides the other side was in about the same condition.

I hate you. I can't believe you can buy that kind of cab for $100! AARRRGGGHHHHH! In New Zealand those 2 coin mechs and doors would sell for that much! Let alone the different coloured ball tops, 25" tube, PCB etc etc blah blah. Damn it's hard to keep up with this hobby down under.
Just my weekly moan don't mind me.

Thanks for the kind words apollo. The former owner just wanted to get rid of it.Plus it was dirty and the controls were all rusted. One other thing good about this cabinet is it is not a classic by any means and it was in bad enough condition that i had no problem converting it for mame.I could have never done this to a classic 80's game.

Looking good Will. As a fellow noobie Mamer I know how you feel.  :) The feet look good. You plan on putting wheels on it? I kinda debated if I'd want wheels and if it would make the whole thing a little "unsteady," but they're working well. Being able to roll the thing around at will is awesome. With all the wheels locked it doesn't move around at all. I'll have to see how it feels with the TV and computer all in it, but if it needs a little more weight that's easily added.

haha, there I go talking about my own project. But yes, it's looking good. Stick with it.

Thanks Nathan ;D Yes wheels are now installed and I finished sanding. This week I'm going to buy the wood for the new front panel for the coin door and the cp.Also working on a test cp with mdf that I had lieing around.Still cant decide if I will invest the time and money for art for the cabinet. My worry is as soon as cp is done and wired I will want to play the thing and I will be left with a nice black cabinet with a marquee.

No pics at the moment but I've made a ton of progress.
-cut new speaker holes to fit my old flat panel speakers
-primed and painted cabinet
-cut new coin door including installing hinges for swing out front panel
-sanded and repainted old parts like the cp hinge, marquee retainer, and coin door
-cap kit installed as well as a few bad fuses replaced in my wg 25 inch
k-7000 monitor (looks great)distortion at top fixed
-only going to hint at it but ive decided to drop the tron/mcp theme and instead go with a spiderman themed art (cpo/marquee/sideart).Still in the planning stages but I hope to have it done by one of the artists on the board
-last thing get my <auto-censored> in gear on cp and finish this damn thing
more to come stay tuned....
