Quarter Century - upright cab project pics
« on: January 01, 2013, 10:45:05 am »
Hi all,
Project began in October, finally decided to get some pics up as it's essentially finished. Designed framework for easy assemble/disassemble. The 2x4 pieces attached to the side panels are screwed from outside, glued from inside. Sides are held to frame by screws from inside of frame into the 2x4s on the sides.
The control panel itself I built many years ago, and don't have any "build" pics. Nothing special here, standard Frankenpanel. The button layout is non standard, but I didn't necessarily design it for Fighting games, but it's quite comfortable for Asteroids, Defender, Missile Command.

More pics to follow.

Here the sides are primed/ready for painting. Had to determine the correct height for the monitor and build onto frame. I Went with a Black Hammered finish (Rustoleum), turned out quite nice, kinda looks like a laminate/textured surface. The front lower panel will be held in place with the 4 magnetic catches. Panel itself is a lighter weight smooth wainscott panel, and allows for easy access to the motherboard/connections inside.
Cab spent quite a bit of time without a bezel, as I tried to determine the best view angle for the monitor, whether standing or playing on a barstool. Finally decided I am not good enough at any games to warrant having to sit down for extended periods of time! In my prime though, a quarter could last 30 minutes (at least on Pac-Man) The monitor is a Hanns HZ281 (16:10) and provides more than adequate screenspace for Vertical games (plus bezel artwork, of course). The monitor itself held in place at the proper angle with some Aluminum angle.
Added a panel in the top of the cab to double as a speaker holder/marquee light mount. Went with a pair of KLH bookshelf speakers that I've had forever it seems, coupled with a Lepai mini amp (@25 bucks on ebay). Used a leather texured T-mould, thankfully matched perfectly what was used on the CP many years ago. Additional blocking added to hold the marquee and allow for lower and upper panels to block light leakage.

Marquee installed! Designed in photoshop and used emdkay for printing/mounting on plexi. So hard to get a proper photo of a backlit marquee, but trust, it looks stunning. Built a speaker grill out of 1/4 plywood, covered with some black fabric, held with magnetic catches.
Mounted the Lepai amp on the back of the CP, with buttons recessed to be flush with panel which holds/protects/hides the lower bezel. Bezel itself is Lexan, spray painted on the back, leaving a screen sized unpainted center section. Final pic is cab up and running.
