Old roms?
« on: October 24, 2003, 11:22:47 am »
Hope this isn't out of line, but I gotta ask.  I use an older version of Mame (.36 final) and I have a few games that I can't get to run.  I have the list of games that is supposed to run under my version of mame, so I'm wondering is it because I possibly have a newer rom version?

Yeah, I believe that is your problem.  I know there is a way to take the newer ones and strip them back, but I am not sure how it's done.  I'd love an answer on that too, I am sure someone in here knows the process.

And no, I don't think this question is out of line, you're not asking for any roms....

Mame.dk was great - they typically had the different versions of the roms.

I remember back when mame.dk was still there (this is after Dave's Classics got shut down) and I was thinking "Man, I better get all these ROMS before they get shut down too!".  That was back in the MAME36 days...

why do mame roms change if they're actual dumps of a real game rom?

They change more often because they rename the ROMs, not because the actual ROMs change.

However, they do change sometimes.  This happens usually when dumping fails and there are corrupt bytes.  So they redump and those are the new ROMs.

If you're looking to backtrack your ROMset, get ClrMAME.

I remember reading about one... but never used it.

If you're looking to backtrack your ROMset, get ClrMAME.

So ClrMAME will make the older rom out of the newer one???

For the most part, although I tried to do this a while ago and ended up with a pretty good set, but a bunch of romsets are no good.  I guess this is due to roms that were used back in the days of 0.36, that have since been discarded (better roms found?).

Edit: just thought I'd add: ClrMAME is great to use anyway, as you can see exactly which sets/roms are bad/missing.  I have a list of these for my 'old' set, now I just need to source good versions...

Mostly.  It can't help if the rom has changed due to a redump, but it will rename to the standard of that particular release.
