So, not only can we completely delete our posts' histories, but we can bring them back from the grave as well?

No, your moderators are slowly, painfully, laboriously bringing them back.

This brings up an interesting aspect to freedom of speech. Should it include his right to remove his posts? I think so.

No, its not someone's right to delete their posts.  This is Saint's forum and he can set whatever rules he wants.  As such, Saint can make any member follow his rules or ban them.

Interesting dilemma. The rule of thumb I try to follow is if it's just something personal or of no value to the community, if someone wants to nuke something so be it. If however someone nukes information that is of value to the community, and/or breaks a thread by pulling out something that was then replied to and it doesn't make sense without the deleted content, then I think it should be put back/remain.

If someone has a real compelling reason, legal/personal issues for example, I'm not insensitive and I won't get in their way. I've changed someone's name and/or deleted their account at their request in the past for such issues for instance.

In this case, barring information to the contrary, it looks like someone nuking things from orbit on their way out. Don't know what/why, and if he wants to tell me something he knows how to get ahold of me.

Quote
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Saint has more right to controlling the content of the forum he owns than the individual users.  The first amendment protects them both [somewhat] from the government having a say in the matter.

Uh, what are the terms of service on something like that?  I feel like if the board gives the option to delete  or change your own post, and someone does it, maybe it shouldn't be reversed without communicating with them.  When you reinstate, are you concentrating on information posts and filtering out snarky comments?  Even though I work from home and am mostly my own boss, I am sensitive about what I post because it's not that hard to link back to me.  I don't try to hide my identity/location/line of work.  I try to refrain from immature or controversial content (except with regard to Arnel Pineda.)  I assume everything I post is on the internet forever.  However, the rulebook needs to be clear IMO.  Add it to the terms that your input belongs to the forum after 30 days or something.  forgive me if this is already covered in the forum rules, I didn't go back and check.

I'm not sure that PBJ shouldn't be grandfathered in and his/her posts left deleted if he took the time to do so, prior to updated rules.  It would be easier to evaluate if he would make a quick post with his reasoning, but that's his/her choice.  I agree that it's annoying to have your own threads confused by deleted posts.  I generally prefer BYOAC with a side of PBJ, even though he's said some dumb stuff that pissed me off.  Generally I have been entertained and sometimes even enlightened.

Maybe he hid some sort of secret message in his posts, a kind of covert metapuzzle. He was just waiting for us to figure it out and win his hidden fortune. We took to long, and didn't realize that "$20 cash in hand" roughly decrypts to "here is where I stashed the Illuminati treasure hoard." Fools, all of us!
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. I find it hard to believe that PBJ would go out on a weak note like that. I know it would be in a blaze of glory. He's just clowning on us. He'll be back.

Generally on a forum the TOS is whatever the owner wants it to be and is subject to change as the owner sees fit.  This is not a democracy nor is it a free service.  In fact this forum is probably fairly expensive but saint pays for it himself and presumably with the small amount of ad revenue and donations.  saint does have the right to change rules as unexpected user activities occur.  I've been here a long time now and I have never seen him abuse that right nor make an obviously selfish or unfair ruling.

Absent any communication from pinballjim I don't see a viable alternative to restoring his posts.  There are too many of them and the integrity of a thousand threads has been thrown off.  IMO it is in the best interest of the forum to restore pinballjim's posts given the lack of notice or apparent reasoning behind their removal.

Possible, but I'm going with the "he's just a tool" theory.  How many new members did he insult and they thought everyone here is like that?  Don't let the door hitcha...

Up to Saint what he wants to do

CT, I def. see your point of view.  Could Saint drop him a PM and inquire?  No need to share his response but it might inform the issue/decisions for the forum owner.

So with the mods restoring the posts he wanted deleted, and him not being signed on for the past few days, I'm assuming PBJ is lockouted somehow to prevent him from deleting those restored posts...

requiring approval to delete a post over x amount of days old sounds like a pretty good idea. as you said Saint, removing information on a site dedicated to helping others is only leaving other high and dry.

It's akin to the post where the person has an issue EXACTLY like yours and then later has a post "NEVER MIND I FIGURED IT OUT"

Besides, if PBJ was that much of a tool, he could do what that moron whatever-lame-name-of-the-week and build his own damn site that no one ever visits.

Seems to me like we can retire calling it "Ahigh" and go with "PBJ" now.  If I recall Ahigh had less than 100 posts or so that he deleted when he started his man-cycle.  PBJ set the bar pretty damn high.

PBJ was never an ---uvula---.

He is a character, with a good sense of humor.

I can think of a couple of peeps on this forum who is bona fide ---uvula---.

Aww, I liked pbj. He was a nice dose of reality now and again. The world isn't all lollipops and butterflies, and pbj helped break the monotony of all the passive-aggressiveness and forced praise going on around here.
I'd take up the torch myself, but I don't have that kind of dedication. ;)

Edit: then again, I'm not as acidic either...
Regardless, I'd hate to see him gone.
