MAME and Crazy Kong
« on: May 14, 2012, 04:55:07 pm »
I fixed Crazy Kong ROM in MAME, but now I have a question to ask. I read on other websites that the original version of Crazy Kong(meaning Part I) was developed by Falcon. However, even though the colors/details in the game match with the original version, MAME senses the developer as "Falcon?". Did I download the wrong ROM, or is this just an error in MAME?

The games are ugly re-written 'bootlegs' of Donkey Kong, their history is muddy at best.  Falcon is commonly stated at the manufacturer, although none of the sets without the 'Part II' moniker have Falcon listed, and even then there are some weird cases where the Part I versions have the Part II graphics in the roms but unused...

I'm not sure it will ever be 100% clear.  An original bootleg product on bootleg boards which was heavily bootlegged...

It's not considered a clone of Donkey Kong because it shares no code, and has been written from the ground up much like the 'Taito do Brazil' 'Kong' game, but you can't really say it's anything other than a cheap imitation / bootleg of the original.

Thank you for clearing that up for me. While the history of Crazy Kong will probably never be %100 clear(due to the fact that the Falcon company no longer exists), the game still seems interesting to me(I think it's because I like how much faster Jumpman moves in Crazy Kong). It's a bummer that some company couldn't get the rights to Crazy Kong, but I know that would be impossible due to Nintendo's strict copyright laws. I have read one theory that Crazy Kong was going to be imported legally to America by both Falcon and Nintendo. However, the deal fell through due to the demand for the game was higher than the amount of machines they were going to import(it sounds strange, but that's what I read), and Falcon didn't produce the required amount of machines in the deadline. So in the end, they were illegally imported instead of legally imported. That's what I read on Strategy Wiki, so I can't know for sure if that's true or not.

I used to play Crazy Kong at a laundromat when I was a kid. In fact, I played that before I played a real Donkey Kong!

I actually first heard about Crazy Kong in a documentary on TV about the history of Mario(I forgot the name of the title of the documentary). They even showed a screenshot of Crazy Kong in the documentary. Another theory I read about Crazy Kong is that there are two Commodore 64 ports of Crazy Kong; one was authentic(which is impossible to find) while the other was a bootleg version. Another theory is that Crazy Kong was an authentic game, but only to be released in the Japanese market(I read the one theory on Amazon, while the other was on Wikipedia).

Ghetto.

That's probably why it's so cheesy. It's cute to play once or twice a year, though.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but this is actually wrong. DK and CK share considerable code, including many of the memory locations (many of the MAME cheats for DK work unchanged for CK). They both have the same exact kill screen on level 22-1. One of the early Japanese DK ROM's even has a couple bugs that are present in CK that were fixed in later DK versions.
