New speakers for my car... where to buy?
« on: October 21, 2012, 08:23:11 pm »
So my wife's '03 Civic has two blown/dead speakers, so I need to find a replacement set of 4 car speakers. Not looking for a huge upgrade (we drive with a 4 year old 90% of the time so we're not pumping out the jams anyway) but just a solid set that I could (hopefully) install myself. Where do you guys source stuff like this?

Bonus question: any recommended brands of in-dash stereos? I could go for one with an input jack for media players, etc.
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

go to www.crutchfield.com and see what fits your car.
Prices aren't the best, but if you buy from there they include whatever mounting adapters, wiring adapters & instructions you need.
If you are concerned with installing them yourself, this is probably the best option even if it's not the cheapest.
Sometimes there are good deals in the "outlet" section.  Always go with the biggest size speaker it says fits.  It's just a waste to go smaller.

I usually end up buying off Ebay or from Amazon.

Another vote for Crutchfield. I upgraded to a Kenwood iPod control deck this summer- totally worth it with what Crutchfield throws in.

A lot of places will have a video tutorial for your car, too, on how to remove all the molded panels and stuff to get at the speakers.  Even if the place you buy from doesn't have that video it will be somewhere on the net.  Knowing how to remove the panels will save you a ton of time trying to figure it out.

Thanks for the advice, I will check those sources! I feel pretty comfortable with most audio stuff but anything car related is a bit of a blind spot, so to speak.  :D

I've been doing car audio for about 15 years.  Check out sonicelectronix, vminnovations, and audiosavings.  For a cheap upgrade go with a good set of pioneer, kenwood, or any other name brand coaxials, for a little more dough and better sound go with some components.  As far as headunit, I have a JVC KD-R900.  Has 1/8 inch in, two usb, direct ipod, bluetooth, and a bunch of other goodies.  I hook up a usb hard drive to it and have my library of tunes.

 Thanks lanman, I am still dragging my feet on this. Should probably get some replacements before I have to install them wearing heavy gloves!
