Donkey Kong Power Supply Mame Question.
« on: October 29, 2012, 11:28:02 am »
Creating a Mame out of the cabinet. I kept the powersupply to power the marquee. I was wondering what the voltage on the thing is. I plan on putting some additional lights on the cabinet using the power strip attatched to the power supply.

Another reason why I believe it's a good idea to keep it is because I am going to use one of those power surger outlet strips that power on multiple devices when one specified device is turned on. I will make that specified device the DK power supply. So when someone hits the Power switch on the back of the arcade it will turn on all the devices. Anyone try/test this?

The marquee light is just 110VAC. You can wire it to a plug to plug directly into your power strip. You don't need to keep that old power supply.

Use the smart strip like you plan, but plug your computer into the master outlet of the smart strip, and wire your computer's power button to a momentary microswitch (an arcade button for example). That way when you turn the computer on, everything else comes on.

I'd rather use the original switch on the back of the arcade machine, it's more authentic that way. Is what I just mentioned in my OP possible? Is there a reason such wiring should be avoided?

If it is a DK, it is wired 100V -- if you are going to MAME it, pull out the fixture, transformer and CP power supply and go all new.

Does that mean anything going into the power supply would have to be 100v? Or 100v as well as anything under 100v?
Is there a reason avoiding using the original power supply is recommended? I'm not disagreeing with the recommendation, I just have curiosity.

The transformer takes 120VAC in from the wall outlet and converts that to 100VAC for use in the monitor and marquee and 100VAC for the power supply Then the power supply converts the 100VAC to -5VDC, +5VDC, +12VDC and +24VDC.

None of those output voltages are any use to you beyond running the marquee (should you need them, you can pick up the +5VDC and +12VDC from your PC power supply). Also, the bulb in the marquee can be a pain to find.

Wiring diagram can be found on page 8 of the original manual:

Got ya!
Are you suggesting I replace the marquee light? If not sorry, that's what it sort of sounds like to me. If so, do you have any recommendations of a good substitute?

I am suggesting exactly that. Grab a cheap fixture from HD or Lowes.
