Show me yer Cornhole!
« on: September 26, 2012, 07:53:03 pm »
A buddy asked if I could help him build a cornhole set. If you're not familiar it's a bean bag tossing game usually found in the midst of barbeques and beers at major tailgating events.  He's a UGA fan (the concessions I make for some folks) so it got the appropriate paint job and he'll be tossing on all kinds of decals I'm sure.

This is my first set and I thought it came out pretty nice.  Not content to build a simple set I decide to make it a conversion so it can be used as a beer-pong/flip-cup table as well.  It will probably see some use for poker as well.  Basically I raped a folding table.

I'm itching to build my own now but want to do mine out of PVC sheet with pipe for legs and do a full vinyl wrap on it so I can go "full retard" with the art.  War Damn Eagle.

Anyway thought I'd post up some pics and and wanted to see if there are any other Holer's out there with a board to share.

Very nice.  A few friends here play a variant of washers called Grunt.  Not sure if they made it up or they just play it.  Fun enough if you have a lot of people around.

Hmmm. you could do some sort of vibration sensor (contact mic?) for on-deck hits, and a microswitch for  in-hole... then run the signals to a detached scoreboard... just thinking about how to pimp one out BYOAC style...
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

That's a good idea - tricky to implement with slide offs and bounce outs tho.  I added T-molding for a bit of arcade feel but it is in desperate need of feature creep.  I need to look into those scoring towers anyway.  I've seen some decent ones that double as drink stations.  I could probably implement a dart board as well but something tells me I'd need to go soft tip.

Here's half of a set I made for my brother in law who is a Steelers fan  The other board has black border around a yellow base with the steelers emblem in the middle.

I put quite a few coats of Poly on them to keep the decals from coming up.

LeChuck, I like that paint job.  What kind of tape did you use?  A buddy suggested that I try Frog Tape and it worked out well.

That's a nice set. I'll probably stay away from the 4x2 full size and stick with the 2x3 tailgate size. I used Frog Tape as well, have a few very small bleed throughs that I had to fix. First time using it. Next time I'll base coat the tape with gesso like I usually do with regular tape. It did have a nice clean release. We haven't poly'd this set yet, good advice to use it to keep the decals down.

I see a lot of ladder golf sets when we go camping.  Nobody ever seems to be playing it.  It's just set up while everybody is doing other things.

I had bleed through too and asked my friend who owns a painting company.  He suggested the Frog Tape and shared a few techniques that helped.  Common sense stuff that I should have known....   :banghead:

Hadn't heard of gesso before.  I'll have to look into it.

Ladder golf is pretty common too.  Nothing beats traditional lawn darts for a good time though.

Well, judging by the pic, I'd say she's a little over full...

You have an old set? Unless you are talking about the cushy kind, they don't really make them anymore.

Gesso is a base coat used to prep canvases for other media.  It seals the canvas so the pigments don't run through the threads.  As a side use it also seals tape edges so that the paint doesn't run underneath and allows you to wet sand over the tape.  I usually use it and always get crisp lines.  Tried Frog Tape and really liked it but there is no substitute for old school.

I'm thinking about adding a "washers" board that will set into the corn hole on my next set.  I'm trying to combine as many tailgate games as I can into one set in hopes that somebody will want to play something.  Really tho, I can't ever pass up beerpong.  It's my weakness.

My parents used to have 2 sets of the real lawn darts (or "jarts"), but they're long since gone...   :(

I thought over how to DIY lawn darts after Hoopz mentioned it. I think for the most part it would be easy. i'm just wondering the best way to make a durable flight for it.

They always seemed like a stupidly dangerous toy to me but they were before my time or not very popular in the places I lived.  I've heard a million urban legends about them from the mouths of business law and marketing professors.  Up there in the Chevy Nova category for sure.

I had a set of the old school skull crushers.  Played maybe twice.  Spent all of my time trying to stick them in trees or seeing how far/high I could launch them.  Weird that they were allowed in the house considering my father handled wrongful death and dismemberment lawsuits for a major cooperation and he was usually hip to the lawsuit waiting to happen type deals.  Of course he had a recliner with a pop out foot rest in the house and those things are a straight up death trap so maybe not.  Likely he just wanted to thin the herd.

Either way I have no love lost for yarts being hard to come by.

My father worked for the manufacturer that designed the fold out mechanism as their legal counsel.  Brought home all kinds of pics of kids injured and killed by "lazy-boy" style recliners in the early '80s.  He wrote the following which is found on recliners to this day to my knowledge:

Quote
CAUTION: Do not allow children to play on this mechanized furniture or operate the mechanism. Leg rest folds down on closing so that a child could possibly be injured. Always leave in an upright and closed position and keep hands and feet clear of mechanism. Only the occupant should operate it.

More than once I have seen a kid jump onto that footrest and have it collapse.  It dumps them right on the back of their head.

I have one of those chairs.  Hasn't killed anyone yet.

Necrobump because my favorite time of the year is soon upon us - the Fall, when there are tailgates everyweekend and public drunkenness is not only condoned but expected!!!

So at the top of this thread I made a corn hole/beer pong table.  There were several things right with this build but a few things wrong.  It was heavy - stupid 2x4 and 3/4" plywood heavy, and it was kind of a pain to get into and out of corn hole mode.  Fortunately it was for a friend, which is the best way to do new projects because they're always happy with what you make and you can make all your mistakes on theirs.

Well after some careful planning I am proud to present the yet unpainted but construction-wise finished BEERHOLEtm!!!

BEERHOLE is lighter but just as stable as the original, with no bounce play as a corn hole.  It is self filling - no more screwing in that pesky corn hole.  It is regulation size for both competitive corn hole and beer pong (yes that's a thing... god bless 'merica!).  Best of all, for a single person conversion it goes from pong to hole in 1 min flat and from hole to pong in 90 seconds.

Just need to get it painted.  Pics!

Beer Pong mode

From the end

Corn Hole mode - still need to fill those threaded inserts.

Detail 1 of how I cured that self filling corn hole issue, the disc is on a picture hanging type slide to allow vertical movement so it can clear the shift into position and also automatically tuck up when on the ground in corn hole mode.

Detail 2 of the same, just slide up for ground clearance.

Once I get'er painted up I'll post again.  Yes I know I have other important projects to be working on and yes I know that this isn't arcadey but it is damn good fun and the original heavy ass slow changing version got used probably 40 times a year for the last two years so that's like basically more than half the arcade builds in this place lol.

Slightly on topic but I looked all summer for a good set of horse shoes.  They just don't sell them anymore.  Much like the lawn darts they've went to these rubber pieces of crap.

I need regulation steel shoes, you know, the ones you can cave a person's skull in with.  Grandpaw used to be the master... nobody would play with him because he never lost.  He taught me so I'm amazingly good... not as good as he was (I never saw him get any less than a leaner) but still pretty good.

I should have a set under a building somewhere around here... they are probably rusted as hell, so I'll have to refurbish them.

Howard, have you checked out: http://www.horseshoesonline.com/horseshoelist.htm these are some pretty serious horseshoes.

I played a lot of horseshoes in Afghanistan the first time, really enjoyed it.  Haven't played much at home, when the kids are older we might set up a pitch in the yard.  Right now they'd just bean eachother and it would be nothing but concussion city.

Horseshoes is an awesome game, but I suck at it. I would say my favorite yard game is bocce ball. I love curling, so this falls in line with it.
