D9200 Smoked Plexi, anyone using?
« on: September 02, 2003, 10:57:42 am »
Well, I got my monitor mounted last night, it looks perfect with the happ bezel and I reread all the Smoked Plexi threads. I had planned to get smoked plexi, but now I'm second guessing myself because everything looks so good now.

I was just wondering if anyone is using a 9200 with smoked plexi? Currenlty, everything looks sooooo good, I'm wondering with the smoked really make a difference for a brand new d9200.

Yes, I read all the threads and did a search
Yes, I googled it.
Yes, I read oscar's webpage on smoked.

Thanks for any help.

i got ArcadeVGA+21"Scart TV and the quality is amazing!!
i have some smoked plexi but its the wrong type, has a brown tint.
it does make the red colours look better though.

i definatly want some smoked plexi as i dont have a bezel and want to hide the insides on the cabinet.

So what color smoked plexi should someone use?  Most people just say smoked.  Is grey the usual choce?

Vegetariansoul,

Yes, gray smoked glass is the correct choice. It's 'neutral' and doesn't change the onscreen colors.

I would say to try both, as there is no technically 'correct' choice - just your personable preference.

finaly got some smoked plexi,
man what a difference!!
but in shoot em up games i find it harder to see enemyfire, the white colours just dont look bright enough, it makes sense in a way because the plexi has well, a smoked colour.
maybe the stuff i got is too dark.

i have slightly turned up colour and brightness and contrast is set to max, gives good balance in picture.
its like it bounces back all the flicker/interlacing and passes through all the good picture quality. it really reduces eyestrain, alot :)

deffinatly recommended, just make sure its not too dark.
i can post some pics.

Mind if I ask what the price was and what kind of shop you got it at? Even just a range of say $30-40 or $50-60 would be cool, if you don't want to give the exact figure.  I'm seriously considering this again...those pics are driving me over the edge :)

where im from this stuff was almost impossible to get hold of, contacted around 50 arcade and glass workshops without any luck really, most either didnt sell to private persons or simply didnt have it.
i was so close ordering it from mcmaster.com (shipping from US would cost a fortune) but finaly someone replied and even sent a test sample.
ordered a piece of 3mm smoked plexi and 6mm clear plexi.
would say it came to 28$ for the smoked plexi (64cm x 64cm).

I have been calling around to different shops and they, too, have no idea what I'm asking about.  I've tried such keywords as "smoked plexiglass, tinted plexiglass, transparent greyish plexiglass, etc".

BUT, there is  McMaster near my city of Cleveland - what should I ask for when I call - the website lists all kinds of 'acrylic, polycarbonate, sheets, rods..." confusing for a moron like myself.

Is this essentially the same as what you all got? (zombie, OSCAR, anyone..)

thats the same as i was about to order, just with less thickness.
not sure, they dont really give an idea how dark the stuff is.

they have a shipping method:
Will Call (Pick up at McMaster-Carr)

maybe its possible to look around in their store. haa! that would be cool. i'd say give them a call.

That should be perfect, but I would go a little thinner if for no other reason than to just to save on the cash.  The smoked plexi on my MAME cab is 1/8" thick and my Sinistar cabinet had 1/8" smoked installed when I got it.  I think both look great.
