Where do you find thickly padded office-type chairs?

I prefer smaller, non-executive chairs. I sit up-right, and don't like chair arms in the way.

I would like something under a hundred dollars, but may be open to something if it's THAT comfy.

Look into Casino chairs.  Nobody has more motivation to keep your ass planted and comfortable.

You probably won't find a new one that's really comfy for under $100.  I sold office furniture for a time, and a nice thick pad will run you north of $200.  Mine were $450.  If I were you I'd look for a used office furniture store in the area.  They always have hundreds on hand and good prices and in great shape.  Shipping would add another $50.  Most chairs have removable arms.  By the way, the stuff they sell at Staples, OfficeMax, Office Depot, etc. are manufactured in large part by Boss and they suck compared to other brands.  Get a 4 or 5 paddle adjustment mechanism so you can make it really fit well.  You're body will thank you.  Human Scale, Office Master, and Global make some really nice cushioned chairs that won't break down.

In honesty, you could grab an old office chair from a thrift store, unbolt the arms, then grab some fabric and foam padding. a couple hours taking a staple gun to it and you could make yourself a pretty cushy armless chair for a cheap price.

I picked up a Herman Miller Aeron from a guy off CL years ago. Yeah, yeah, I know Aerons have a whole fanboy mentality going for them, but honestly, it's the most comfortable chair I've ever used.

With the mesh back and seat, I never get too hot sitting in it for long periods. It's very adjustable.

And you can take the arms off, raise or lower them to whatever fits your frame.

One note, the lumbar support on the bar is a must, if the chair doesn't have one you can get them separately.

Keep an eye out and you can often bag one for 200$ or less.

If you're normal size guy, go for the C size, though (the biggest), B and A are pretty narrow.

@Vigo: I've thought of this, but I need four or five of them, and would like them to match.

I have a Roc'n'Soc throne that's pretty nice, but they're still about $200. Those are supposed to be hand-assembled, but still...

I don't see why chairs cost so. The mechanics aren't ground-breaking, and foam isn't that expensive even today.


What do casino chairs look like?  And where would I look for those?  Where would I look for security guard chairs?

I just did a google search for "Casino chair" and turned up several companies that make them. The down side is that they generally look like what you'd think casino chairs would look like. Not sure if I'd want that in the house

The dealer's chairs look more like regular office chairs, but I don't know how you separate the bad from the good.

I don't see why chairs cost so.

One of the chairs I sold was manufactured in China and cost $37 to ship to the US.  That was sold to a distributor in the same building for $130.  They were sold to the end user for $270.  Just sayin'.

Also to note, the manufacturing facility in China manufactured private label chairs for many companies here in the states.  They have a catalog with interchangeable parts and you assemble your custom chair.  Mechanism, seat, back, fabric, cushion, arms, arm rests, legs.

@Badmouth: that chair looks comfortable, the style was common in the late 70s/early 80s for casual dining, but I want height-adjustable.

Yeah, probably not. Looks pretty great (though I could do without all the levers). Hard to tell, though. Looks thickly padded, but is it even foam, and if so what grade?

Finding a chair is kind of hard. I was in my aunt's late 90s/early 00s Passat wagon, and I noticed how upright the general condition of the seats were. You could lay them back, but you weren't forced that way in the default position. (Plus they were THICK and used high grade foam.) It wasn't just a sign of luxury, but of posture relative to social class. It seems that is fading away, and even higher end cars are coming plagued with bad seats.

It's a very comfortable, the same seat as I'm sitting on now but I have a mesh back.  It's going to be over $300.
You can get a used one just like that for $50-$75 at a used office furniture store.
Or, go to www.buyerzone.com, put in a request for an office chair and you'll hear from 5 companies vying or your business within a couple minutes usually.  That's where we got a lot of our leads when I was in the business.
