Are all Galaga ROM's this messed up?(Update: ROM Fixed!)
« on: May 08, 2012, 11:24:00 pm »
I've been using ClrMAME to fix my Galaga ROM, but the problem is that I discovered many errors with the ROM's I found. I merged all of the ROM Images(such as the .bin files, for example) from all of the versions available online into one folder, and closed it up using WinRAR. However, after using the scan feature with ClrMAME, I discovered many errors with the ROM images. As a file attachment, I included a picture of what is missing in my ROM set. I know that asking for ROMs is against the rules, so I won't ask about that. If anyone has any ideas on what I could do(ideas that don't involve breaking any rules), that would be great. By the way, I read the rules before starting to make posts on this forum, so I know what's allowed and what's not allowed.

Ignoring ClrMamePro, what's the issue with your Galaga rom? Is it not working in Mame?  What version of Mame are you using and what version of the rom do you have?

And what was your goal with using ClrMamePro?

My Galaga ROM wasn't working in MAME. I used all four versions of the Galaga ROM's available(Midway Set 1, Midway Set 2, Namco, and Namco revision B).  The MAME version I chose was 0.145. As for the years they were created, the ROM files range from 2001-2004. For my goal with using ClrMamePro, I chose ClrMame so that I could fix the ROM's, unless if RomCenter is better for that.

I hope this helps.

I'd bet money that your rom version didn't match the Mame version.  Unfortunately, you can't tell from a rom file what version it's from.  You need to go to your rom source and see what it is.

The simplest way to resolve this is to get an updated or correct version of the rom.

There used to be a link at Mameworld to a database called "Maws".  Maws would show you the last time a rom changed (updated sounds, artwork file fix, etc).  It was handy so you could see when it changed and with what version.  Maws was taken off line months ago and it's a huge issue not to have it.

You can try and change your rom but then you need rollback roms and go through that hassle.  It's just going to be easier to get a different file.

Just run it through the command line, it'll tell you what files you are missing, then google them, thats what I did with my galaga.

What he meant to say was if you runmame thru a comand line you will be able to see what files are missing then you just can google them and add them to the zip file. o do that , you can push your window key plus r and that would open up the run window, then type cmd, that would open up a command window, from there you need to change directory to where you got your mame directory, let asume you have it at a c drive like most comon , so you would type cd c:\mame  (enter)   then you would be at your mame directory, after that you would type mame galaga  (enter) and that would try to run galaga, and because its missing some roms, it will tell you  wich roms you are mising... hope my crude explanation will help. Ps pardon me for my bad grammar .

I just wanted to let all of you know that I fixed my Galaga ROM! It says that the graphics are "Imperfect", but the sound effects and graphics look just fine. So thank you Hoopz, abispac, and elkameleon for your help. The next two games that I'm going to fix in MAME are Crazy Kong and Dragon Buster.

I didn't have any problems with Galaga, but Gaplus was missing a certain file. So I just found a version with that file in it and manually added it. Works fine after that.

Yeah, adding it manually is a lot easier to do then using a ROM-fixing program(since the ROM-fixing programs I was using weren't compatible with the newer and newest editions of MAME anyway).
