Family Guy Online Announced!
« on: July 20, 2011, 03:10:07 pm »
As some of you may or may not know, I make games for a livin'. I've been doing it for a while now, but in all the projects I've been on, I haven't been more excited about announcing this game to the public. Last night, the game we've been developing for the last little while has finally been announced, it's Family Guy Online!
It's a free-to-play, browser-based, 3D multiplayer game, but not like your typical MMO. It's Family Guy, so there's a lot of outrageous things to do while running around in Quahog.

Anyways, we've released our character creator online for people to register and make their own characters if anyone is interested in checking it out:
http://www.familyguyonline.com

Hope you guys enjoy this little teaser site!

No, quite the opposite.  I think he understands the humor of my generation (late 20's to early 30's) better than most people involved in tv today.  If you don't find him funny then you probably aren't in that age group.

Seth MacFalane WAS funny. Too bad he diluted his product. Family guy was really refreshing when it first came out. Now every episode is completely dialed in with an obligatory song for filler. After the 15th time, a running gag isn't a running gag anymore, it's just recycled jokes. His other shows frankly are not very different at all from family guy, either, it is FOX's easy way out of investing in originality.

Agree, its formula is a constant barrage of lame jokes, maybe 1 out of 5 jokes is funny, people tend to forget the lame humor and only remember what they laugh at, but if you pay attention 80% of it is not funny.

I'm 33, I understand what he's TRYING to do, he just sucks at doing it. His style is tired and South Park nailed it when they pointed out how absurd his jokes are. (Say what you will about South Park in recent years, Cartoon Wars was hilarious)

Umm you do realize that you just descibed comedy don't you?

Seriously watch any stand-up comedian's act ...... it's 35 minutes of them talking about their life trying to be funny and then 3-5 minutes of some of the funniest stuff you've ever heard.  I'm talking top-shelf comedians like Prior too, not your typical run-of-the-mill hack job.

If every single joke in a show is considered funny to you then it's entered such a niche market that there's no way it would ever be broadcast on network television.  The reason you find some of te jokes "lame" is because they weren't directed towards you, but rather somebody else that would appreciate the joke.  1 out of 5 is pretty damn funny... that means you find 1/5th of the content to be funny.  I dare you to find that ratio with anything else on network tv.

I also get a chuckle out of the "if you pay attention" line.  I see a mental image you you sitting a foot way from the tv, with perfect posture, taking notes.

Well, he said funny, not "some of the funniest stuff you ever heard" If Family Guy still hit that mark, it would still be a good show. Instead, they put about only a 10 minutes of effort in, then fill the rest with a character doing a random cover of a cheesy song, then peter fighting the chicken yet again.

I've always felt like the sales pitch for FG was something like "It's totally like 'The Simpsons', but way edgier!"

For the first half of this project, I practically watched the full series three times through. Usually while working I'll have the episodes running in the background, occasionally glancing over to catch a joke or funny sequence of events. Obviously whenever you work on an established licensed product, you gotta put in your homework and analyze every single thing about that product to reproduce and continue it's branding.

I have to say that out of all the episodes, for me season 3 was where the best of the show really came out. That was right before it's cancellation. After it came back in the forth season, it was still funny, but just not the same wit as the previous.
Throughout the following seasons there were a lot of great episodes that got me laughing, but after a while I agree that it was very formulaic (much like any comedic act).  But what show's aren't?  Look at The Simpsons (a comparison that everyone loves to throw out there), that show is on it's 22nd season...and it's just not funny anymore. It continues because of A. Audience momentum (aka becoming a house-hold name), and B. Formula.   At one point the show was fresh, but if you wanna bring up beating the dead horse on punchlines, The Simpsons takes the cake. Not only that, there hasn't been much progression of characters in that show. In FG, characters have changed their personalities, some have left the show (spin-offs or being killed off)...but at least it keeps moving forward.

In any case, this thread isn't to persuade people to love the show. It was meant for those who already likes the show, and are interested in interacting with it on a fresh scale where you get to be involved with the gags and humor through playing a free-to-play online game.

Love it or hate it, it dun matter to me...I still get paid ;)

The show grew on me in the early days enough to buy the first box set, but then ... lost interest.

New show I really like is Bob's Burgers.

But bringing this back on topic, congrats Opt2Not!

Hmm, since last June huh? Yeah, that would have been about the time we started pre-production on this.  So that's definitely part of it, but also because I have a couple paid commissions I've been struggling through, still am. So free time away from work, along side of this hobby and life has been sparse in the last year.

You're wrong, Howard.  He described bad comedy.  Good comedy doesn't just hit you with a nonstop barrage of jokes, regardless of quality, hoping that something is bound to make someone somewhere laugh.  That's just crap.  Comedy does not need to deliver a punchline at least once every five seconds.  Just because you end up laughing a few times at the latest Adam Sandler movie doesn't make it good, or put it on par with, like, Groundhog Day or Wedding Crashers or Ghostbusters or Dr. Strangelove.  Good comedy does not tell unfunny jokes.  Like . . . by definition, it doesn't.  Surely you see that.

Hell . . . watch Archer.  From beginning to end it is hilarious.  Almost no unfunny joke is told.  That is how primetime animation is done.  And that is exactly how Family Guy is not done.  If Seth Macfarlane "understands" the humor of your generation, I'm sort of ashamed to be 32 years old.

1 out of 5 jokes is a terrible ratio and only five minutes of LOL funny stuff from a comedian = Please Give Me My Money Back.    Funny is subjective but a good joke is a good joke, even if it doesn't particularly tickle your funny bone.  If a show is only making one good joke and four throwaway jokes then it is not a funny show.   Granted, I don't exactly throw Family Guy in that category just yet.

Speaking of FG: I used to like it.  A lot.  But I think there came a point after it was resurrected when Seth McFarlane thought he could throw anything out there and hope it works, forgetting what made the show funny the first time.  Too much reliance on unnecessary gross-out humor, too much preaching as of late (Brian became the annoying "Lisa Simpson" of Family Guy) and jokes that go on for way too long even after the punchline had long been delivered.  And the episode when Brian and Stewie were trapped in the vault was just pretentious BS where it had forgotten it was a comedy.

I still watch it and laugh occasionally - but it's no longer required watching for me.

How do you get to the character maker?
You got to register, then activate your account through the email they send you. Once activated, you can login to your account, then there should be a button that links to the Character Creator on the left-hand side.

Honestly, I wish they didn't require you to register first before trying out the Character Creator. It's such a pain whenever a site does that, and it turns people away 'cause it just isn't easy enough.
Unfortunately those decisions are made between Fox and the company handling our web-portal...if it were me, I would allow people to play with the Character Creator then offer them to register when they want to save their character they made.
