TUBE Swapping
« on: November 21, 2011, 01:26:33 pm »
I have a MK2 that has a bad tube. (I think). I dont have another chassis to connect to the tube nor do I have another tube to connect to the chassis. The voltage on the chassis to tehe tube look good. 130 v b+ 430 and tube guns all have same voltages on white screen.
The Tube is A63LIC36X  I found a sanyo TV with an A63AFX32X. I Know that the A63 is 25inches in cm. I cant remember what the other 6 letters and numbers are for. ANYONE?? I look up the Numbers on the B-K chart and I didnt find an exact number match. A63AFX on donor tube and A63L on original tube. both are the same cr numbers. have not checked for ohmage on Donor tube. but I read on 8liners that yo can add resistor to lower or make higher the OHMage on the yoke. ANY Other help or caution I need to know about before I try this on the 30th of this month?

Thanks Have a Great Turkey Day all

Thanks Michael

I'm not an expert at this, so take this advice with that in mind.

I do have a couple of questions. What makes you think the tube you have is bad? Was it blurry and wouldn't clear up? Was it dim? Was it all red/green/blue?

The tubes have a part number, and you can look up the pinout/specs of the tube online.  The new tube should be the same size as the old tube with the same connector.  It is a nightmare to try and swap yokes. Avoid that like the plague.

You read the ohm readings on the horizontal and vertical, and they should match the new tube.  I think it's like 7 ohms on one, 2-3 ohms on the other.

And don't forget to google:

And you can get "universal" chassis to fit older ones:

Thanks Fredster( I pray I got that right)

I will keep that in mind. As I am not an expert at all this either. I have some experience in setting yokes tho. I don't find them that hard to set really. Just don't want too if I don't have too. As far as the tube goes. The picture is very dim. I have tried everything to brighten it up. Been told by a few people to swap chassis to that tube if possible. well I don't have either so going with this. But Thanks for the links. GOD BLESS
Thanks Michael

Here's another one that might help:

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=203539&highlight=tube+swapping

I did this once, years ago, with a G07.  I took the yoke off and everything. I have a friend that is good with electronics and we got the thing to work, but we messed up the convergence rings when we put the yoke on.  I never did get that tube to look good.  I still have it in the shed.

When I get parts I go to arcade auctions. Where I'm at, there are auctions every 2-3 months. I wait till the end and pick up games for $10-$30 bucks, that's how I get parts.  I have a shed full of parts and pieces, and I tinker with them. If I can fix them, fine, if not, I wait until there's another auction.

WOw Fredster
I dont think there are too many here in my area (auctions). Have to check.

I was asked to repair these video games. There is 10 games. 9 out of 10 did not work and the tenth one had something wrong with it. So as of to date all but one is up. It is an asteroid game that burnt up the Flyback(?) and the High voltage Tripler. It burnt it up bad enough where it burnt many of the components on it :dunno  LOL. So I am looking for parts for that.

The tube swap can be hard. Changing the yoke is hard tooo but If you know where to start its not to bad. The first set of rings are the purity rings. Moving the Yoke in or out and using the rings to line up all the guns and max picture is the first thing. Next is line up the red blue to make purple and the green to make white. YOU have to make sure the Yoke is set in the right place to get a good picture. I did a lot of yoke and tube swapping for a computer company for more then 12 plus years. But I have not done this in years but I did do a convergent problem on a pac man game and I set that one up. Yes IT took 1 or so hours.

Great chatting with you. Here is my email address We can chat direct there I think. Mrazy1@hotmail.com
 :)

Just an update the 25" TV tube and OHMage on the yoke was within the 1-2 OHM range to install the Donor with my Pentronics monitor board. The picture needed to be ajusted to fit but other then that It working and looking great.  :applaud:

So you just swapped the tube and yoke straight out? You just took the chassis yoke wires and soldered them to the new yoke?

yep just swapped the whole tube and yoke out. and soldered the chassis yoke wire to the donor yoke. I did have a problem with Picture being backwards. The donor wire was the same colors but when I match color with color the picture was backwards. I praise GOD that he gave me the experience to always use alligator clipped wires first before soldiering anything together. other then that it worked great. Did I say I got the tube at goodwill for 20 bucks out of a used TV? Sonya.
Thanks Michael
