Well i finally "finished" my cab. Meaning its finally painted, has marquee, etc. It will always be an ongoing project though. I posted pics a while back in its unpainted form, minus marquee and monitor glass. I'm still looking to redo the control panel, but for this will be how it stays for a while. I've thrown together a few pages of pictures that can be seen here:

Theres actually around 50 pics or so, but many are more or less the same. There's alot of needless pics because i've included all the pics i've taken that came out decent. No ground breaking work here, another based off lusid's design. However maybe the pics will be of use to someone in the planning or early building stages. As far as specs, it uses a 27" sharp tv, and xp1700+ AMD based PC with 896mb DDR ram. The joysticks are all Happ P360(though in some of the early pics, i had super's), with the center being set to 4 way. I think the rest is easy to figure out, Happ 3" blue trackbal, etc. Next i'm planning to work on a scratch built digital jukebox. Hopefully that will be as fun as building my cab. We'll see soon. Whoa, that is a lot of Ram for a Mame cabinet. I don't believe there is a video game in the world that can benefit from even half that much ram.

Thanx for the compliments guys. The color scheme isn't original as a few other people have done it, but i'm very happy with it. There are 2 reasons i have all that ram. First off, i had it lying around from when i upgraded my main computer with PC2700 ram. 2nd is for games like killer instinct and UMK3. Having the excess ram fixed my sound problems with those games. Other than that, yeah it's overkill.

Thanx Edgedamage, unfortunatly the wiring pics don't reflect the current condition. I never took new wiring pics when i redid the control panel and unfortunatly i got lazy(and cheap) when i rewired the controls. When i redo the control panel again in the next few months, i'll re-perfect the wiring.

Hi Homebrew,

Nice work! I'm in my planning phase and I hope to post something one day that shows as well.

You say that the center joystick (the one with the red ball-top) is a P360 in 4-way mode? How well does Pac-Man or Donkey Kong play? Also, I'd didn't know that the P360 came with a ball-top or did you do a retrofit? I ask because I'm trying to select a good ball-top joystick that does 8-way and 4-way well.

actually i purchased the ball top handle from a guy on ebay. He always has sets on there though his ebay name escapes me at the moment. There's a thread on here about him. He makes them for various happ joys. I'll see if i can find his name and the thread i'm talking about. Both the happ supers and the P360's can do 4 or 8 way by flipping a piece on the shaft(have to remove joy handle first to flip). So far it has played the 4-way games great. I have a set of oscars restrictors, but have yet to mount them. That would give them a better feel. As far as performance though, they work great for 4-way games. Hope this helps. I'll see if i can find that info on the handles.

thx. I vaguely remember the thread you mention. I'm sure I can find it if I try. Funny, I never considered just replacing a joystick handle to get the joystick I want. You've opened a whole to realm of possiblities for me. thx. 01

Actually i lied, i was gonna buy from him, but at the time he didn't have any auctions orsomething. This is where i ended up getting them from:

The ones listed as "Reproduction Robotron Joystick ball and shaft set" i believe. I did have to had 1 washer to get the proper fit, but after that they were fine.

I too was planning to do the middle black, and the sides blue but im not sure now cos i dont want people thinking i copied your idea!

I like the cab a lot. And for what's it's worth, I don't think it's possible to have "too much RAM", especially now that's it's relatively cheap and insures that there's no sound cracking. Well, okay, it may be overkill if you go for more than a Gig, but other than that throwing as much RAM as possible definately doesn't hurt.

But you also helped me with my back and forth on whether to make my cab black with blue T-Molding or a dark blue with Black T-Moulding. I think I'm going with the latter, as it makes the cab stand out more (black cabs look nice too but seem to dissapear in the shadows to me).

Glad they helped. Like i said, the blue/black wasn' t my idea, i'm trying to remember who's cab on here i got the idea from. I'm really liking the two tone scheme. I'm thinking red and black would look great too. I'm actually not happy with the black i ended up with. It was called kettle black and thats really what it looks like. It's not the deep black the sample appeared to be. Even though its a satin paint, it looks much more like flat. It was just so hard picking a shade. Who knew there were a jillion shades of black to choose from(had to get custom mix since for some reason, nobody in the area had satin black in their lineup). On a side note I'd love to see someone use a color changing paint on their cab, but that would be EXPENSIVE. I bet it would look awesome though.

I almost used blue t-molding, but i was afraid it wouldn't match the blue paint i used. Provided they matched, i thing blue t-molding would look awesome.

Na Im not the guy who made but I talked to him to see if it was alright if I used it. Very cool guy heres his website, I love that marquee I think its the best one Ive seen thats why I had to use it.. The only thing he asked of me was to shoot him a pic of the final cab he wants to know what it looks like and how many people are using his marquee..

My Cab is Yellow, Black with Blue t-molding.. I just got my trackball installed and I have to get some more wiring for a couple more buttons then Ill show you a pic. Im still debating on CP art and SideArt.

Ah thats where i got it from. I remembered getting it from a website before i started building my cab, but couldn't find it again. Then when you mentioned it originally, i wasn't sure if maybe it had been yours. I'm real happy with it as well, i'll have to shoot the creator an email and some pics. Thanx for the link.

Yeah, red probably would be a little "colorfull" or "loud". Although i worried the same thing with the blue. Thus far, i'm quite happy with my choice. Another thought i just had was a blue/yellow cab. I may toy with that on the jukebox i'm getting ready to build.

Those are Hagstrom breakout boards. They work well with the hagstrom encoders. You can find them here:
