Eygo 27" VGA Arcade Monitor Fail
« on: September 16, 2003, 12:02:10 am »
My beautiful Supercade is broken!!!!

I took the PC out of my MAME cabinet to make a minor repair (noisy fan).  When I put it back in and hooked everything back up, the monitor was no longer working correctly.

Basically, the vertical hold has gone haywire and won't stabilize.  It just cycles horizontally over and over again.  This is the EYGO 27" monitor with a VGA interface.  There is a small PCB board connected to the main board via a long ribbon cable.  On this PCB there are most of the monitor's controls (H. Phase, H. Size, V. Size, Brightness, Contrast).  By playing around with these controls, I can almost get it to stabilize, but it's still wrong.  Obviously this is H. Phase, but it is almost like H. Phase won't turn far enough to the right.  To a lesser extent, all of the other settings affect the cycling as well (most notably H. Size).

I know almost nothing about monitors, nor would I even know where to take it to have someone look at it.  Does anyone have any idea what's wrong?  It doesn't appear to be anything major, so I'd like to attempt to fix it before I just scrap it and order a new monitor from Happ (which I can't even verify will fit properly in my cabinet without modifying the cabinet).  Not to mention that I don't really have the money for a new monitor.

p.s. -- Of course I am aware of the dangers in working on monitors, and I am very familiar with how to discharge them and have done it in the past.  Further disclaimers are not necessary.

I had an issue with the remote pots on the ribbon cable on my eygo a while back.  I copied and pasted the posts below.  You can fix it.

I just picked up a 27" Eygo monitor. It works great. The picture is bright and clear and since the max resolution is 640 x 480 it doesn't look like a computer monitor at all.

Anyway, I have an adjustment issue. I tested it out of the cab and it worked fine.  It has controls (6 pots) to adjust the picture.  I need to adjust the height of the picture.  When I turn the pot to adjust the vertical size, I am at the limit of the rotation and I still need to make the picture a little smaller to fit.  There has to be an easy way to recalibrate this pot or to adjust the pic to fit.

What I figured out that fixed it;

On my monitor, I got it from Closeouts, I live in Conn. so I just went to LI to pick it up myself.  If you've been following the eygo threads you'll understand why.  He has 2 27" eygos left and a few brand new WG VGA monitors for I think $350.  The monitor I got was refurbed and it's quite clean and looks brand new.

Anyway, it has six monitor adjustments on a ribbon cable as a wired remote.  The pot for the vertical size was maxed out, so I did a little research and found out that there are many pots for adjustment all over the main board and neckboard.  Without a manual or schematics it is trial and error to find the right pot.  With the monitor on, (use a plastic screwdriver and always be aware of where your arm is or else you will get zapped.)  I placed a mirror in front of the monitor so that I could view it while working in the rear. I made a big panel in the back of my cab that comes off for just this purpose.  Working methodically I turned each one to see what they would do. Turning them back to their original position when they weren't the one that I was looking for.  I found the pot I needed after a I tried a few.  Adjusted it and now its perfect.  Windows looks great and more importantly so do the games.  I'll post a pic when I get a digital camera (soon).  For a 27" monitor that doesn't look like a computer monitor at all, you can't beat $175, well maybe you can but this is the option that I wanted to go with.

Yeah, my EYGO came from Closeouts as well, and I've been pretty happy with it up until this point (although when I bought it I was totally pissed off about the shipping cost).

I did look for pots on the mainboard, but the only two I found were for focus and intensity (brightness).  I will have another look tonight for additional pots on the mainboard.

If anyone has anything else to add, all comments will be appreciated!  I'm trying to get this fixed before a friend of mine comes and visits for the weekend.

There are many small pots on the mainboard.  The one you are looking for is on there.  Use a plastic screwdriver to turn each one a little to see what it does.  You'll find it.  It took me 15 mins to find mine.

I can't thank you enough!  Those pots on the mainboard kind of blend in, but once I spotted one, I kept finding more.  The third one that I tried fixed the problem.

Thank you a million times!
