The Guard
« on: August 29, 2011, 05:50:06 am »

I'm often not on the innernetz on a Monday, but I just got back from the movies and I had to tell you about this film!

Bloody awesome! It's a cop movie, starring Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheedle. Gleeson is a small town cop in Ireland and Cheedle is a visiting FBI agent on a huge drug investigation. There is much humour which is very, I dunno, I don't want to say 'Irish'. But it is done with finesse. Mark Strong plays an English bad guy (which he seems to have made a career out of. He's damn good at it I must say).

All supporting actors were great. Gleeson himself is in top form. This is a 5/5 from me.

Interestingly, Gleeson was also in 'In Bruges' which I ranked 5/5. Colin Farrell is in two of my 5/5's as well, although he only supported in 'The way back'.

Looking on IMDB, Gleeson has been a very busy lad the last couple of years, so there are more films with him on the way. Good to see some movies that are just great in the old fashioned sense, without a brazillion dollars of CGI to try and make it more interesting. Just noticed in my little quote below none of those 5/5's are known for CGI. Mary and Max is claymation.

Anyway, "The Guard" is one that is definitely worthing going to the cinema for (",)

Quote
my score for recent movies you may have seen:

5/5 - The Way Back, The Kings Speech, Michael Clayton, In Bruges, Gran Torino, Mary and Max

4.5/5 - Taken, Iron Man, Reign Over Me, Watchmen, The girl with the dragon tattoo

4/5 - True Grit, Traitor, Bedtime Stories, Sunshine, pineapple express

3.5/5 - 300, Max Payne, You dont mess with the Zohan, Yes Man

3/5 - That new Indiana Jones flick, Disturbia, That new TMNT flick,

2.5/5 - Angels and Demons

2/5 - The Love Guru. Note: My 2 is probably someone elses 1. Just leaving room for worse!

I can't  stress enough how awesome this movie is, so here's the plot in someone elses words:

"Sergeant Gerry Boyle is a small-town Irish cop with a confrontational personality, a subversive sense of humor, a dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes, and absolutely no interest whatsoever in the international cocaine-smuggling ring that has brought straight-laced FBI agent Wendell Everett to his door."

I know it might be poor form to bump this yet again, but I just went and saw it again tonight. It's still playing! And no, I don't have shares in the production company or something  ;D  It's just that a movie like this is in the minority really. That company would have to scrape and bow to get a film financed, yet if it's some piece of garbage by Michael Bay, people will throw hundreds of millions at him

No thanks, one white cop black cop buddy movie was one too many.

It really doesn't come across like that at all. Damn, what was that Mel Gibson movie called again? Anyway, it's nothing like that.
