Back then it was really hard to make video games about super heros at all because the owners (DC/Marvel) were super-anal about breaking canon. For example, Superman can't be killed. You can't punch Superman in the face and expect to get anywhere. Sure you can claim the henchmen have kryptonite gloves on, but still... So to get around this they made up some dumb story about a virtual world or dimension. You'll notice Superman doesn't "die" (that's impossible in 1988 DC universe). So you see Superman de-rez into a green wire-mesh. It's all a computer simulation. The alternate color superdude? Just a cloned simulation.

Dude, I hated how Doomsday beat Superman to death. That was so lame... You need to Kryptonite his ass, or blast him with magic. Cmon DC.  ::)

Didn't they introduce the concept that Superman runs out of energy and needs to recharge shortly before he and Doomsday had it out? Lame.

I knew I'd have to f#*&$#@*&ing explain it to the lameoids. Taito Superman came out in 1988! "Death and Return of Superman" didn't exist yet. Until then canon was that you can't kill Superman.

I'm pretty sure superman for the NES he flat out dies. I could be wrong, but I think can die in one of the C64 ones as well. If I remember right, the arcade game had the grid thing to simply justify superman losing to crappy opponents by explaining that it is just a simulator.

Hey LT, good call on Kingdom Come, I LOVE that book. Such an awesome story, and the art really draws (pun intended) you in. Alex Ross does some kick ass work in that one.

Also, check out Red Son by Mark Millar. The art isnt nearly as good, but it has a cool twist in the Superman mythos.

Superman shouldnt be the dick. Batman is the dick. He is so good at it.

The whole death of superman thing was retarded. Same with Batman getting his back broke, Wolverine getting the adamantium ripped out, and Spiderman having his clone come back and driving him crazy. "Hey lets boost sales by destroying our flagship characters."
