MAMEWAH Users - Question
« on: September 11, 2003, 07:56:06 am »
Up until MAMEWAH v0.90, I included an option for 'Auto-Show' DOS Box.  For those who do not know, this feature would do this; on launching a game, it would check the roms for the selected game using 'mame romname -verifyroms'.  If the roms are all good, the game would launch as normal.  If the romset contains bad roms (bad dumps), then MW would display the ugly DOS-box type thing while the game loads.  This would enable you to 'press any key' when prompted, which is otherwise impossible (as the box is not visible, it would appear to hang).

The downside to this option is that there is a slightly longer delay between hitting '1' and the game being loaded.  The actual delay will vary depending on PC spec, OS and ROM size.  (I just did a test on my work 2.26GHz P4 running XP and the delay for GAROU was barely anything.  I seem to remember on my P2 333 running '98 the delay was quite long tho...)

This option has been missing since v0.95b as I haven't got round to adding it back.  My question is this:  does / would anyone actually use this option?  If not then I will probably not bother to add it back as I prefer to compile my own build which skips the bad dump warning screen.

Please say if you would like this option to make a return, as that will give me the motivation to do it  ;D

Minwah,

Although the feature is a great idea, I have never used it. I like the cleaner look of editing the source so that the dos box isn't needed.

Thanks for your great work on MameWah!

Thanks for the reply, I too like to just remove the part in the source.  Hopefully No Name MAME should be able to achieve this at some point, although it seems to be broken at the moment :(

I just wondered if anyone may use it, as not everyone is happy rolling their own ;)

I did used to use it actually.  I didn't even realize it was gone until I was trying to figure out why certain games were "hanging up" when running the latest Mamewah.  Turns out they weren't, we just can't see that darn dos box.
I'm not a programmer and have no motivation to compile my own source, so if you were to bring it back I would use it.

Don't bring it back just for me though, because I too would rather use the No Name Mame solution if he gets it working.

I'm confused (what else is new)...I have version 0.955b and when I go into execution settings/Dos Box, I can still select auto-show?  I do still use this option to prevent hangups.  The delay is not noticible on my arcade unit (P4 1.7)

Tough question.  Because people could either use my hack (which has to be updated if you have followed No Mame conversation) or just to use NoMame.

At least document the behavior well so a user will know what the option does and if they need it.

You can select 'Auto', but it doesn't actually do anything!  Try GTMR and you will see what I mean...

Since a few are interested, I think I will add it back.  Thinking about it, it is handy for me when a new MAME comes out but before I've compiled my own.
