Easy Noob Router Bit Question

Do they make straight bits in really small sizes.  I need a 1/4 inch shank but would like the cut to be only 1/8th.  I'm finding that router bits are really hard to come by except to order them online.  HD and Lowes don't really have anything, my local tool store only has a few bosch bits and that's it.

Can you describe what you're trying to do in more detail?  (I'm not 100% understanding the usage of 'kerf' as you put it, but that might actually be me and not your description.)

Also, why would you want to go with such a small size on the cut?  1/8th seems very, very thin to me.  I'd be concerned with the bit snapping too easily, seeing as MDF is really dense material to work with.  What's your depth of cut going to be?

Yes they make them, you can get cheap, poor quality bits on e-bay which would be perfect for something like this.  They are cheap, and they aren't the greatest quality and they ship from china, so they can be a little slow, but for what they go for in China, they are practically disposable.

If you are doing detailed work on a router, it might be really hard to do. You can also drill a hole in your wood and insert a jeweler's saw and cut by hand. You can also get a router base for a dremel tool that would be easier to work with on detail work.

Actually, I already have a dremel with the router base, any suggestions on a bit to use?  I'm trying to cut through about 3/8" of 1/2" MDF.  Thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't thought of that until you mentioned it.

Ok, I just got a 1/16" single flute bit from MLCS. I'll have to let you know how it works out after I get it.  Anyone have any experience with ship times from them?  I'm hoping it is faster than the 7-10 business days that it mentions on their website.

The more I thought about the dremel the more I thought that there weren't really any advantages to the router except it seems like it would be less stable and less precise.  I'm only cutting straight lines and can do it in several passes if it has a hard time getting through or else just go really slowly.

I ordered an amazing bit from them that allowed me to cut a 45 degree angle into 3/4" MDF - all the way through.  If I remember correctly, I got my bit within 7 days, and I'm in Canada, so that means it cleared customs at lightning speed.  Quality communication from them afterward too.  I would happily order again.

Thanks for the info, I ordered a straight bit and a slot cutter from them, hopefully they come fast because I'm at a standstill without.
