i think the success of the original wii has killed gaming (well not KILLED) at the moment. everythings all crappy and casual friendly. because thats where the money is in gaming at the moment... hopefully this trend isn't permanent and we can leave these horrible motion control schemes behind us....i almost feel like microsoft made me look like a chump thinking i was all hardcore playing their xbox, now it looks like i have sesame street minigames and racing games with auto acceleration and braking to look forward too.
I hate to burst your bubble, but motion controls are here to stay. You don't sell a whole game system for 7 years just on motion controls alone and then have your competators imitate your efforts on just a fad.
Motion controls are a GREAT THING. They are far superior to traditional controls, assuming the genre of game is a correct fit. I remember playing Metroid Prime 3 when it came out and found the setup to be amazing. To this day it feels like a giant leap backwards any time I play a fps on the 360. The problem is casual games dominating motion control software selection.
But you know, in the case of Nintendo, even that isn't too bad. Find me a person that didn't have a ball with Wii Sports and it's sequels/spin-offs and I'll find you a bald-faced liar.
Well that and the fact that Sony and M$'s motion control solutions suck. Sony essentially copied the wii's rig right down to the nunchuck and then forgot to actually support the nunchuck for the fps games, making their solution essentially worthless.
As for m$, while the kinect is extremely impressive in what it CAN do, what it actually DOES is less than impressive. That and the fact that the whole concept is flawed. I don't want to be the controller damnit! Unless it's a dance game or a boxing game, my avatar on screen is going to have something in his hand. I need something too! Also you can't walk around with such a tech without the aid of some kind of physical controller and thus far they haven't released any.
And they didn't kill gaming. They SAVED it. Nintendo, once again, single-handedly saved the gaming industry. The industry had become stagnant, sales were falling (don't misunderstand, the bottom hadn't fell out or anything, but analysts were predicting a video game crash similar to the one in the early 80's prior to the wii's release if things didn't change), new franchises and ideas were in short supply, ect.... Like it or not, the Wii got developers re-thinking how you make games and more importantly, it got the gaming industry a larger install base, meaning those crappy casual games you hate so much are funding the more involved titles.
See that's my biggest problem with the new wii... the LACK of motion controls. Sure the new controller has gyros and such, but much like the six-axis, it's wierd shape limits what you can do with it. Unless I am wrong, the legacy controller support will probably end up like the gamecube controller "support" (note the quotes) that the wii got... in other words next to none.
Of course, I want a proper gamepad as well. Motion controls aren't for everything. The new controller kind of ruins the wiimote and the gamepad, which is what bothers me.
And no offense to you personally, but anybody that thinks owning a 360 or ps3 makes them "hardcore" lives in a fantasy world. Yeah, you bought a FPS box and play the games that 90% of the main "gaming" demographic plays. You guys are actually the casual players, while people like myself, who play fighters, platformers, obscure japanese shooters, visual novels and ect.. are the "hardcore".

Don't misunderstand, I have a 360 as well, but that's to play mainstream "casual" games like your Assasin's Creed, and your random generic fps of the week. All the wierd stuff is on the wii, pc, arcade and dreamcast.
