Mounting speakers

I might have made a mistake with my cabinet...I forgot to route speaker holes under the top of my cabinet  (doh)!

 Unfortunately the cabinet has already been glued together. What options do I have? Are there any other good places to place the speakers?

Also, does anyone have any good recommendations for cheap speakers?

You could use a jigsaw upside down, or I know some router will work inverted, but not all. You could also flip the cab upside down and have someone hold it so it doesn't fall on you and route it that way.

I'd consider using my router although it is a tad too big to fit in there

You could drill a hole pattern into the wood and flush mount the speakers on the back side of the panel. I did that for my bartop project where the speaker panel was to small to cut a big hole.

That's a good idea. My only worry is that I chip up the veneer with the drill...although I could place a speaker cover over it...

Depending on speaker size, use a hole saw. Perfect circles, little clearance required and you can always use (or borrow) a right angle chuck adapter if you can't squeeze the drill in there.

why hole saw?

Hole saw or a grid of holes would be easiest, I'd think. In any case, I'd find some nice speak covers that can screw down flush to hide whatever you do decide to do. Not a big deal at all.

if you hole saw, take the time to turn your cab upside down.  its way easier to hole saw nice and straight while pressing down rather than trying to hold the weight of the drill and saw and push up.  Also, tape up the area you drill through with masking tape so you don't chip your veneer.
