    • MOTUMAME: A Masters of the Universe Arcade Cabinet
I am just starting my first cabinet, based on a Williams Universal Cabinet 40008 donor from 1995, with what appears to be its original 25" monitor. I'm assembling my parts to purchase list and want to make sure I'm on the right track here. We tested the monitor with a Golden Tee PCB and it seems to be working fine, thus far. But the real test is coming up when I try to get it to work with the PC we're building.

The Questions

-Firstly, I'm assuming I've got a Wells Gardner U5000 (WGM 2550?). Based on the photos I've attached of the chassis, does that sound right?

-If so, do I need to order the service kit upgrades?
# S01J0000-000F Service Kit, U-5000 Horizontal Output Transistor Update
# S05F0000-000F Service Kit, U-5000 Vertical Deflection Update
# S04E0000-000F Service Kit, U-5000 & U-2000 Power Supply Update

-Do I need to power it through the included isolation transformer? According to the U5000 manual, it doesn't seem that I do.

-I'm planning to order an ArcadeVGA from Andy once he has some back in stock. Should I plan to order a VGA breakout cable and arcade monitor video amplifier from him as well?

Thanks in advance for the help, all. Its much appreciated.

Can't help you out in IDing the monitor, but... If it's working, why install the service upgrade kits (why fix what isn't broken)? Even if the monitor doesn't require an isolation transformer (don't know for sure, I don't know what model you have), it wouldn't hurt to use the isolation transformer with the monitor (might as well use it since it's there). Ultimarc's VGA breakout cables are nice since they mate with WGs (and some others) already. If you have a spare VGA cable laying around you can make your own with a molex connector (kind of a PITA though). WGs don't require the use of a video amp with an ArcadeVGA, they accept input signals from 1V(what the ArcadeVGA outputs)-5V (once you have the monitor ID'd, check the manual to make sure though).

Thanks for the tips, Nephasth. Once I've ID'd this sucker, it sounds like I've got a sound plan of attack.

And thanks, lilshawn. I can get back in there later this week and take a few more pics if need be. Any specific callsigns particular to the K7400 that I should be sure to capture?

i can kinda see in one photo the heat sink and it doesn't have the typical U series resistor fix

but the number i can see doesn't follow the newer k series WGM##### part number which makes me believe it's an older U series.

so it's a U series that hasn't had the fix applied to it?? or a k7400

the plug in the middle of the board is a giveaway the u5000 has the plug and the k series doesn't... it just has a wire kinda plopped in one of the plug positions.

EDIT: to add photos

I was kind of wondering if it was a K7400 or 7500 as well. I didn't see the dual resolution connectors on the main chassis like most U5000's should have.

Look on the edge of the main chassis (might be under that white label on the left side) for a "P###". (like P738 or P763 , etc, etc)

Finally got back in the cab today and pulled up the stickers layered on the upper-left side of the chassis. Looks like P717-D.

So what do we think this is?

Thanks for trying, lilshawn. Anyone else have an idea? Is there something else I should be looking for?  :dunno

http://www.wellsgardner.com/bom/P717.pdf

says u2000 or k7400

P717 is a U2000 .....

A K7400 chassis is a P763.
The K7400 was the "replacement" for the U2000. (kind of like the K7500 replaced the U5000)

FYI- Both the U2000 and the 7400 use a P719 neckboard.
