Bigger the better in cocktail?
« on: May 20, 2011, 10:28:08 am »
Just picked up a cocktail with a bad monitor 19 inch with broken tube and neckboard with huge burn in. saw a 25 inch tv for sale for twenty bux. Physically it should fit but will it look weird being so large or is bigger better in a cocktail?

if you can jam it in there, it can't hurt.  :P

just be sure the replacement monitor can display (or be modified to display) the frequency of the original game, lest you hack it all up for nothing.

ive replaced the cocktail monitors with 19 or 20" computer monitors with success. they are cheap and (sometimes) readily available too.

it all depends on the kind of cabinet , the viewing angle ,panel size, hori or verti orientation or if its an 1 or 2 p cabinet. some may do fine with a 13 inch , others with 20/21 or a 25 inch screen . i think there is no way to build a satisfying table cabinet around a 28,29 or 33 inch screen . in the early days cab builders usually used 13 inch because the electric took much of the inside room and bigger screens were expensive. in the present with all the cheap micro comp stuff i would prefer something around 20 inch . make sure the tube fits in . a 25 inch is nearly 4 inch more in depth than a 13 inch tube. i had build a 25 inch vertikal cocktail cab some time ago , but it took a long time to optimize the ergonomics . bigger isnt always better , sometimes it ends in desaster.

I got a 27" cocktail and any bigger and you will have viewing issues at the top corners. It has a lot to do with the lack of being able to adjust posture when playing a cocktail cab; you cant move up and down because you are bent at the neck. On a stand up cab you can lean back or forward. Still, cocktails rule!

I've played on the ms. pac-man/galaga reunion cabs and they have either 25 or 29 inch monitors.  They felt a little too big for me.  Hard to keep everything within the center of my vision.  And also I feel the screen just looked too big in the cab.

Go for a PC monitor that's 21 inches or smaller.  I think even a 17" PC CRT would be nice.

I have a 21" in my cocktail (see .sig) and it is perfect for me. I would not have liked smaller and bigger in my case was not an option.
