HELP ON PACMAN COCKTAIL CAB
« on: April 21, 2011, 08:37:58 pm »
Greetings all.
a little introduction.
My name is Randy....I'm from Corning NY and have owned arcade machines and coke machines for a few yrs now.
I just acquired a pacman cocktail cabinet.
Runs good...but am having problems with the colors.
I replaced the monitor chassis board with a freshly capped one from ebay.... but I'm still having problems.
When I fire it up, colors are good with the excepting of pacman being red when traveling across the screen (red on right and goes towards yellowish color as he gets closer to the left.)
the intro screen...all ghosts are the correct colors...but when pac comes out with the ghost following, he has the red to yellowish colors and the ghosts eyes are funky (orange-ish in color and turn white-ish when he eats the pellet and chases/eats them)
main board play...same way all over.
When I open the top while its on the colors change....tried degaussing the monitor with the soldering gun but didnt improve.
checked all chips for bent legs and proper seating....cleaned the edge connectors too!
Is this a combination of board and monitor? (color guns possibly bad?)
thinking of getting a pac to jamma adapter so I can "test" the board on my 60 in 1.
any inputs?

Looks like you need more degaussing.   Soldering guns are fairly weak for a good degausse.  Try a proper degaussing tool.

well....he degaussed it for me.
got rid of the purples but pac is a solid reddish color still, and center of ghosts eyes are messed up too.
is this possibly a color or character prom?

Either the monitor needs adjusting, or its possible the socketed chips on the board need to be cleaned and reseated.

There are 3 pretty good Pac Man troubleshooting guides linked in the Restoration page of the BYOAC wiki.
Working: Not Enough
Projects: Too Many
Progress: None

Have you tried playing around with the convergence of the RGB on your monitor?  Might not be your problem but just throwing out some ideas since you mentioned a red color.

Here is a good video about tweaking convergence:

Good luck.
