Best Movies on Blu-Ray
« on: April 17, 2011, 04:16:31 pm »
I am finally beginning to assemble a Blu-Ray collection.
Would love to hear your inputs on "must have" blu-ray movies.
I am not looking so much for for great movies, but movies that are more visually entertaining because the are on blu-ray.

I don't really believe in buying old movies just to say I have it on blu-ray.... amirite?

Got a triple pack the other day with:

Blade Runner
Total Recall  - this film always looked kinda crappy on VHS (yes that long ago) then DVD, but on Blu Ray it finally comes up really well.
Terminator 2

I already had these on DVD but are great to watch again on Blu Ray to see and hear the extra detail.

Also picked up a few James Bond favs for the same reason.

Anything by Pixar looks stunning on blu-ray.  The other Disney releases are great too (Tangled, etc.).

The Dark Knight is pretty amazing on BluRay.  You can often find it on sale for around $10.

If you are a Bulls fan I highly recommend Michael Jordan to the Max.  It was filmed with IMAX cameras which I believe is actually a higher resolution than BluRay.  Pretty awesome to see the 1998 Bulls in HD.

WARNING: I am a sucker for implausible action movies on bluray with my speakers cranked up & a bowl packed with butter er I mean popcorn.

My advice is to get a netflix membership & pick action, sci fi & etc genres & then sort by star rating (be sure to enable bluray selection). Begin checking each one out & after watching then decide which to add to the permanent collection.

Here are a few titles that are fun to watch in a theater setting....

Nightwatch
Daywatch
Punisher
Doomsday
Death Race
Rambo (that new one)
Crank 2
Gamer
Red
A Team
Transformers (or anything with Megan Fox for that matter)

Those cheeseball WWE movies have been entertaining (The condemned, 12 rounds, The Marine & etc)

POTC, IJ, LOTR, James bonds & Harry Potter + SW E3, E4 & E5 (there is no 1, 2 or 3)

For sure Matrix.... I'm trying to find a good price on it locally, I didn't want the super collector's edition for $35
I love Fight Club and have seen it maybe 342 times, if the remastered version is worth it, I'll grab that one.

Hell yes I'm a Bulls fan! I still get goosebumps when I hear the court intro. Great advice.

Done and done. PS3+Netflix= save $65/month by not paying for cable anymore.

Also thinking of comedies like : The Hangover, Old School, Step Brothers....for the special features, since my pirated copies lack those features. And really I can never get enough of them.

My wife got me the Alien Anthology BluRay set for Xmas and it's pretty awesome if you're a fan of the series.  Frankly, only Alien and Aliens are 'real' to me, but I'll watch the other sequels just for kicks.  The re-mastering is really good

I have a good collection of Blu-Rays but the one that shines the most is The 5th Element.
I can hardly wait for Star Wars to be released on Blu-Ray later this year.

Our new TV came with a blu-ray player. Do regular movies (ie, old movies, filmed before hi-def) actually benefit from being blu-ray? Or is it just an excuse to get people to re-purchase their collections?

Film is higher resolution than bluray, so good transfers are worth the upgrade.  But that doesn't mean they'll all look better.  Sometimes they "phone in" the film to digital transfer and you're left with a hi-def turd.

Yep, it's sad that you have to research certain blu rays before buying to make sure they are not screwing you with a bad transfer. Many times, you will not get any real noticeable difference with a Blu Ray if they don't do a good job on the transfer.

At the same time, certain DVD releases have intentionally bad transfers in order to promote the Blu Ray versions.

there very few blu rays that doesnt actually have higher resolution. just google search before buying. for example 28 days later was originally shot with a regular home video camera or something and there is no way to make that look any better on blu ray.

For a mostly objective view of BluRay titles based purely on video quality (not director or artistic intent) check out this thread over at AVSForum

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1168342

Won't tell you if the movie is any good, but it's a nice reference to pick out a few 'wow factor' flicks to add to your collection to show off your fancy new TV

Oh man I can't believe you said Black Hawk Down.  I don't know why but when blu-rays first came about, this was the first movie to pop in my head that I wanted to see on blu-ray.  Now that you recommended, I must!  Is it really that much of a difference??  I'm getting it tomorrow ha

On that same vein of educational documentaries, the Planet Earth and Life are both very cool on Blu ray. Just be sure to get the original UK David Attenborough versions. Not the American Sigourney Weaver and Oprah ones.
