How to remove scratches from a CRT arcade monitor glass?
« on: December 14, 2010, 12:11:46 pm »

Hi all!

Any pointers on how to remove scratches from a CRT arcade monitor glass?

Is there a special product to remove scratches without damaging the glass screen?

Would the results be good?

Thanks!

Scratch removal from the glass is very expensive. It can be done by a glass shop, but get out the wallet. I hear it costs about $350 to do it.

Generally, I consider the scratch permanent and only replacement with a new tube is the cure.

There are some threads over at Arcade Otaku that may help. [This] thread lists them.

Thanks for the input guys!

Following Franco's pointers:

http://forum.arcadeotaku.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=235

The reason for this is because I was given (for free ) 2 CRT tubes (samsung and videocolor 25'' and 27'')
both working but with medium to deep scratches on the screen.

I need to evaluate the condition of the screens thoroughly and see if polishing is worth the effort (and money).

Deep scratches aren't worth it.

Light scratches can be done, you buy a kit (sorry I don't have the link, try google). But it's a little like making your own optics for a teliscope. You sand with finner and finer grit until it's clear. IMHO, deep scratches can't been done yourself.

my advice, live with the scratches or dump the monitors.

Oh, ya, you might read online to use teeth whitening toothpaste, doesn't work!

Hi NBM,

I kept the "mildly" scratched videocolor tube and dumped the samsung, as it was deeply scratched.

The "no bull MAME book"?

Nice one!!
