Dynamo Cabinet and Larger CP upgrade
« on: February 15, 2009, 01:32:37 pm »
I have acquired a Generic  25" Dynamo cabinet that I'm going to convert into a Mame cab.  I figured this would be a good cabinet to start with since the monitor doesn't work and the original Punisher Jamma board won't turn on either ( >:D Capcom and there stupid suicide batteries).  My plans for this cabinet are to re finish the outside with new formica and to build a larger CP that is easily removed so I can take it up and down the stairs.  It will be a 2 player set up with 6 or 7 buttons, U360 joysticks and it will have a 3 inch Happ illuminated trackball.  This will be my first cabinet so I might be looking for some help but we will see how it goes.

After making a few different size cardboard templates of the CP and after deciding which one looked the best I cut it out of 3/4" particle board.  The overall dimensions ended up being 36" X 14.5".  It is probably a little bit larger than I need but I thought it looked the best.  Here are a couple of pictures of the CP so far.

I then decided that I wanted my Control Panel to have a 1" over hang all the way around so I cut my main support piece 1-3/8" smaller than my CP.  I will cut my sides out of 3/4" and put a 3/8" deep dado in them which will leave me with a 1" over hang.  This main support piece will slide in and out of the cabinet for easy removal.  Here is the main support piece cut out and notched for a nice fit into the cabinet.

Here are a couple of pictures after I removed the old CP and took some material off of the cabinet with a router so I could get the right height and angle for my CP.

This is what the CP and support look like in the cabinet.  Eventually it will be boxed in and the CP will hinge from the front.

Now for the mounts for the CP support.  I ended up buying 50 of the threaded inserts that are 1/4-20 threads off eBay for $10 with shipping.  I had some 2" X 2" X 1/8" angle iron that I drilled 3 holes in the top piece and 5 Holes in the bottom piece on each side.  I then clamped the angle Iron down in the cabinet and Pre-drilled the holes.  Then I removed the angle iron and drilled the holes for the threaded inserts.  I made sure that the holes in the angle iron were a little big so I could adjust them up or down to ensure that everything was level and it is a good a tight fit for the support board.  One thing that I did before I drilled the holes for the threaded inserts was make a depth stop for the drill bit to keep me from drilling through the side of the cabinet.  If anybody wants to see that let me know and I will post a couple of pictures.  Its pretty simple I just took a piece nylon, Drilled a hole in it with the drill bit I was going to use, then I drilled and tapped a hole through the side for a set screw, then you just slide it over the drill bit where you want it and tighten the set screw down.  It worked great.  Here are some pictures of the mounts in the cabinet.  I used lock washers so the screws will not loosen up.

Nice CP upgrade, the shape compliments the cabinet - should look pro when finished.

I'm not sure if I have exactly the same cabinet, but it sure looks like it. I'm working on installing a MK style control panel I'll put together some pictures as I go.

I would love to know as well, considering that I am doing the same thing with my cabinet.

There have been post bumps older than a year that have gained a response before.

No, an insult would be taking someone's hard work, then plastering your team's logo on it and saying "that's better".

I'm confused.  Are you saying you're offended because I'm building an homage to Doom 3's in-game game?  (Am I missing the point?  Did I do something else?)

I said, "your team's". Since when is Doom 3 a team?

Perhaps within the magnitude of running up your post count,  I can see how you'd lose track of your comments (in this case, actions) as well as being oblivious to other people's reactions and impressions of you. In addition to that, the ignorance of presuming that everyone is as "easy-going" as you are is unsettling.

Let me spell it out for you: Defiling someone's cabinet by vomiting your Toronto Maple Leaf's logo on it.

Sorry - when I clicked your profile to find out if you had been the guy who posted the last, I noted the 'artist for hire' link, and thought it might have been a 'creative license' thing.

Absolutely.

Hey Opt, why the hate? Please inform of something if I missed it.

Opt's talking about this post.

Opt - I honestly didn't think you were offended by that...  ...it certainly wasn't obvious from your response.  (Killer flames, btw.)  I certainly did say how good your cab looked.  I thought it was funny to put the Leafs logo on there - but I guess that's your point, eh.  Hell, what's worse is I haven't watched a damn Leafs game since Dave Andrechuk played on the Team.  I just figured that was the normal 'guy' thing to do.  Didn't realize the level of your fan-dom.  (Thought that level was reserved for the U.S. Football fans, honestly.)

I didn't think it was such a big deal, but as it was to you, I apologize.

Apology accepted.

But just as a point to make: When trying to make a first impression, it's probably not wise to start with the razzing until you've gained a bit of a report with the person you're razzing. Otherwise, it just comes off as being a ---meecrob---. You know what I mean? I'm all for the razzing, but for those who've earned it, you don't know me that well to make it sound not confrontational. Like for instance, if we were in a bar and I was talking to the guys about something, and some random dude came out of no-where to bust my balls on it "in a guy way", that's pretty much an invitation to get stomped on. In the virtual forum world, "being stomped on" is basically translated into avoiding, or challenging anything you post without prejudice.

Also, for future reference, when a person builds a project based on a sports team it's probably 99.99% out of sheer fan-dom. Why else do it? Yes, that level of fan-dom transcends national borders, ethnicities and sports genres. I'm not sure if you get that kind of exposure in Ajax (I've actually been through there,  when I lived in T.O for awhile)...but I've seen some pretty crazy hockey fans in my day, Leafs fans as well as Canadiens fans to name a couple.

Lol, they're pretending hockey is a real sport...

Point taken. Yeah, I do tend to come on a bit strong at times. And you're right - not knowing the target audience and tossing someone's favourite team to the ground is not high on the list of 'how to win friends and influence people'.

Also, for future reference, when a person builds a project based on a sports team it's probably 99.99% out of sheer fan-dom. Why else do it? We do have fans out here, I'm sure. (I live around the corner from Glen Healey, actually, and I've seen them come by when he's done signings in the past.)

And yeah, the Leafs vs Canadiens battle was big back in the day.   And yes, Hockey IS a real sport. Just like the CFL > the NFL.  (Or so I'm told by Canadian friends. I'm just not 'the sports guy'...)

Oh boy. Well since we've diverted this thread a ton already, might as well run with it.

As a fairly patriotic Canadian, believe my sincerity when I say the CFL is a bastardized version of the purity of American football (which I religiously watch as well -- Steelers Baby!!). 3 downs?? Wider field and end-zone to support a more passing game?? Striped larger-sized ball (I'm guessing to see better during a snow storm?). All these rule changes just puts even more emphasis on one guy, the QB, rendering the running game almost pointless. Less strategic, and definitely less exciting.

Sheesh, and we get mad for the Americanization of hockey...  :dunno

Well, I've trolled enough for one day...

To the OP:  If you ever come back to this thread, my apologies for the derailing.

Ok well, I was gonna bash on Rick for talking ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- about the NFL, even though he threw a disclaimer out there saying he isnt the sports guy and thats the opnion of his friends BUUUUUTTTT Opt said he was a Steelers fan so that immediately changed my attitude! Obviously, Im a Steelers fan myself! Good job Opt, you have good taste in NFL teams.
