Halloween - More kids than we have ever seen
« on: October 31, 2010, 10:10:52 pm »
Wow we usually get 100 full sized Mr Big Bars and that gets us through the night.  This year we gave out the 100 bars and 60 bags of chips and had to shut down early.  Might have been the mild weather up here in Canada but that cannot be the only reason.

How did you all do this Halloween?

The weather was great, but there weren't that many houses handing out candy this year. Certainly not as many as last year. We walked out 6yo around for about an hour and called it. Kind of surprising, considering the weather. But then, last year, Halloween was on Sat, this time it's a school night, maybe that had something to do with it.

Surprisingly to me, we had lower than our "normal" turnout of kids. This year only saw 183 kids which is significantly down from our last few years. "normal" numbers were closer to 230-250 kids. What with the down economy and all, I would have thought that the number would have spiked upward but, like drventure said, it was a school night. We had ok weather. cloudy, low 50's at dusk and dropping into the mid 40's by dark.

We bought way more candy this year, since last year we had a lot of trick 'r treaters. We had MAYBE 12 kids all night. I don't know what happened.

Oh well, those few kids kept interrupting us watching the World Series anyway.

We gave out about 600 pieces of candy this year.  The town imposed a 7pm curfew but it didn't matter - things were wrapped up by 6pm for the most part.  I live in an area with lots of younger kids so everyone was out starting around 3.  It was a fun day - we have friends over and we walk around with beers while the kids trick-or-treat.

I had a big whopping ZERO kids this year....the number just keeps declining each year. Last year we had 2, year before 7 or 8, and year before was 12.

I guess if I actually had neighbors, and didn't live in a sea of forclosed houses, people might decide to stop by my house.  :dunno

Might have been the mild weather up here in Canada but that cannot be the only reason.
Canada is a HUGE country.  ;)

Toronto here. About 25 kids. I was surprised there weren't more (my first Halloween at this location).

NO MORE!!

I'm in Edmonton and it gets darn cold some Halloween Nights.   Have had -20C with a wind but this year we were way above average at about 8C and no snow.

I was pissed. I just got my house in April, and was super excited to decorate the house cause the neighborhood was good, and BAM. Maybe 5 or 6 kids. And they were little too. One was crying cause he got so scared of my house. I went all out, spent a TON of money, had a party, but barely any kids. I was bummed.  :'( Not to mention I got a shitload of candy, and I cant even eat it cause Im a diabetic. I made custom zombies bursting outta the ground, a dead dude hanging from my tree, bought blacklights and carved 10 pupkins, tombstones, spider webbing, skeletons etc... Then my buddy who lives about 2 blocks over said he had more than 300 kids at his house and had to turn them away cause he ran out of candy.  :banghead:

Im hesitant to even decorate for Christmas cause nobody probably wont even see it.

Stupid seniors on my block. They ruin everything. They need to kick the bucket already... The lady nextdoor looks like she is dead already...
Pictures are overrated anyway.

I got about 80 kids which is about par for the course.
I always give out big candy bars which is always fun to see the kids faces light up when they see them.  Now that I've been here a few years I hear the kids say stuff like "Alright, I told you this was the house" and one of the parents told me my house is famous.  Growing up there was always the one cool house in the neighborhood that gave out the big candy bars, so I knew that I had to be that house when I got older :)

There is something kids remember when they get a full sized bar. At our last house we were there for 25 years and some of the kids grew up and brought their kids around because they remembered the bars.  When you figure it out a full sized bar is not much different in price than a hand full of those mini bars since you never give out only 1 of the minis.  We are in a new area now since we downsized 5 years ago (too much upkeep for a large lot) so I guess what is happening is that the kids who were just born when we moved in are getting bigger and more and more of them are coming out for halloween.
