router noob, bit questions
« on: September 08, 2010, 09:53:32 am »
I've never used a router in my life and I was lucky enough that my brother is letting me borrow his to cut the slot for the t-molding but I had a few questions first. I searched and searched and ran across some people saying that different size slots were needed and honestly I just ended up more confused and unsure of exactly what I need to get this part of my build done right.

First, I have my side panels cut out and upon closer inspection I can see some wobbly cuts I made so I wanted to get both panels clamped together and run what I believe is called a flush cut bit along the outside of the panels to make sure I have an exact match. The problem being that I have never used a router and am not quite sure what bit I need to use and if I even have the correct bit or if I need to purchased one. Here is a picture of the bits my brother sent with the router.

Second, I'm using 3/4" MDF for my build and I see multiple 3-wing slot cut bits on t-molding.com's website, which one will I need for my build? I'd rather not be hot gluing the entire length of tmolding after buying the wrong bit if I can make sure I get the correct bit for my application.

I'm not quite sure what to do about the flush trim bit but for the slot cutter, I just ordered a Slot Cutter Complete Assembly with arbor and bearing for $16 with the following specs from MLCS

Width of Cutter - 1/16th"
Shank - 1/4"
Depth of Cut - 1/2"

Hey congrats on starting, I'll be starting my first cab soon myself!

Have a look at this page he dicusses the router bits in detail.

Here's a part about using the flush trim bit:

I've seen some folks order the t-molding first then cut some slots in a test piece of wood to determine the bit size and depth. This might slow you down a little but if you're not sure it's probably best to get some t-molding from tmolding.com and test it out before doing the whole slot.

Hope that helps!

ok, I feel like an idiot but I've never used one of these before. How do I assemble the slot cutting bit to the arbor with the bearing? What is the order? It didn't come with any directions.

slot cutter> then washer> bearing> second washer> nut?

Also, at t-molding.com com you can order free samples (you just pay for shipping).  You can then measure using the samples.

I can't find anything near their prices in the UK. Cheapest I've found is nearly £20 just for the cutting disk, then you have to buy the arbor and bearing on top! I'm wanting to build a Ultimate arcade II (or at least that's the only one I've found that will take a large tv and 4 player cp) and I am struggling greatly with finding the parts I need as everything is metric over here and all the plans and the tools are listed in imperial sizes and they just don't translate.  :banghead:
