1st Project - Galaxian cab #19,267
« on: August 08, 2010, 12:11:19 am »
Long time lurker, first time project.  I bought this cab today via a local dealer for $50 after buying a Tekken 4 last month for $50 as well.  Pretty sweet deal considering it's an original Galaxian cab and it included the original bezel, marquee, coin doors, and control panel.  After about 2 hours of work, the cab is essentially stripped.  You can see from the picture below, somewhere along the line it had the sides painted black and a pale blue on the front.  After removing the coin door and mechs, you can still see the original Galaxian graphics and white cabinet color under the coin door frame.  I figured posting it here would motivate me to complete it a little quicker than it I hadnt plus get some great feedback.

My plans are:

1. clean everything up
2. correct all surface damage
3. either repaint or laminate the surfaces
4. install new 19'' monitor
5. since there isnt a pcb, install new multicade board
6. install new cp with trackball
7. install new JAMMA harness
8. install new power supply
9. install light source for backlighting the marquee
10. install a few modern AC accessories

Something simple.
1 - 8 way
3 - buttons
1 - trackball
2 - buttons for 1/2 player select

I really want to get the coin mechs up and running so I can use it as sort of a piggy bank for myself.  I'll give the wife the keys to the machine when complete.

Havent figured out yet exactly what size trackball I should use, but I have some time I think before I get there.  Ordered the board, harness and power supply yesterday.  New monitor came a few days ago.  All in all though, this is panning out to be much cheaper than I had originally expected.

I think it will be awesome to have a bunch of the old style vertical games in a Galaxian cab.

That would be the last step along after I had every thing up and running.

UPDATE:

- Ordered the new powder coated CP
- Ordered new CP overlay
- Ordered new buttons (5 red - 2 white)
- Ordered lime green t-molding

Still shopping for:

- Joystick
- Trackball

21 Sep 2010

Spent a fair amount of time this weekend on the cab.

All the parts have arrived.  Waiting till the paint process is complete.

- all surface damage repaired, replaced
- replaced inner 2 partitions (1/2'' birch plywood)
- sanded, filled, primed (2 coats) inside and outside of cab
- control panel overlay and controls installed (still cant find 3'' carriage bolts easily)

- First coat of white on the sides, front, and back today after 2 coats of primer.
- Also purchased a pair of shielded/amp speakers - Logitech X-140's for a decent price

I bought an Atari 2.25 inch at Arcadeshop.com.  I also splurged and got the JAMMA trackball harness, powder coated cp (1 joystick, 5 buttons, trackball), and cp overlay.  Very friendly, quick shipping.

Hardest part has been finding 3'' carriage bolts which I finally found at grooveygear.com at a decent price.

I am curious, which Arcadeshop.com control panel did you get for your Galaxian?  The panels I see there are Galaga/MsPac panels, and from Crayola's experience I thought those panels are not a direct replacement for Galaxian/Pac cabs.

This one is the one I purchased along with the overlay.

gShooter,
Have you tried your new CP on the Galaxian cab?  I am very curious to know if it fits, if it does I may order one myself!

It fits fine.  I'll post some pics tomorrow.

-  Finished almost all of the white and black painting today.  Just have the shelves left.  Gotta work the powered speakers (X-140s) in the shelf tomorrow.  If all goes well, might even get to play a few games.

- swapped out the screws for carriage bolts on the trackball (carriage bolts from Crow River)

- swapped out the pushbuttons for convex pushbuttons

03 OCT 2010

Got a fair amount done today....not as much as I wanted, but a solid amount.

Here are the pics I promised:

Speaker Installation

* The speaker install went fairly smooth.  For the future, or next build, I will buy a hole saw.  The Porter Cable jigsaw I have will be going back for the Dewalt I should have purchased.

Control Panel Dry Fit

* The control panel is pretty simple.  There is a small 1/8-1/4 inch gap along the edge of the panel.  I think that a small strip of auto door edge molding will make it snug.

Why did you strip the control panel if you were getting a new one?
