Micro Cab competition (Prizes). DEADLINE EXTENDED
« on: August 05, 2003, 05:41:47 pm »
There seems to be a fair amount of interest in micro cab mock ups either for testing out dimensions of future MAME cab projects or just for fun.
How about a competition for best micro cab?
What do you think? Anyone like to donate a prize or two?

RULES

Competition closes 31st October 2003 ( entries will be accepted up until midnight GMT on the 31st October ).

Entry is by post to this thread with pic attached ( those of you without digital cameras can buy a disposable and get your photo developer to put the pics on disk for you ). Remember the better the pic the better your cab looks the better chance of winning.

Judging will be done by myself and Alan17

Categories will be:
Best reproduction of a dedicated cab
Best cocktail
Best MAME cab
There will be 1 winner in each category and then the best overall will be picked from the 3 category winners.

Any type of microcab can be built. It can be an exact reproduction of your favourite dedicated cab ( including cocktail or sit down cabs ) or a reproduction of your own MAME cab ( or your dream MAME cab ) or something completely different.

Dimensions of your entry should not exceed 30cmX30cmX30cm that's 12"X12"X12". Try to include an item in your pic for a size reference i.e. a quarter ( no building a giant quarter and putting it next to your full size cab lol ).

You may include working electronics i.e. lit up marquee or even an actual working cab that can be played ( all be it by a midget )but everthing to make it go must be in the cab ( PC, wiring everything ). Power source can be external.

Multiple entries are fine and are encouraged.

Smaller is not better just keep within the size limits.

Everything in your entry has to fit within the size limitations and should be authentic arcade in appearence ( you know what I mean ). This means that the only thing going to your cab is a power lead nothing else. No hand held controls.

NO COMPUTER MANIPULATION.
There will be no exceptions to this rule. The judges are aware that there are some forum members who are particularly talented in this field. Your entry pic should in no way be manipulated using any kind of software or computer enhancement, if it is the entry will be disqualified. Please don't do it. This doesn't mean that you can't create art for your cab on your computer and print it out and then apply it to your cab, that is allowed of course.

There will be winners in the 3 categories and the overall winner will be chosen by Alan17 and myself from the 3 category winners. We have no personal preference for dedicated, cocktail or MAME we will just pick the best as we see it. All the prizes whatever they are will be sent to the overall winner.

Good luck and have fun, we should see some great results with all the skills out there on this forum.

Thanks all

UPDATE PRIZES BELOW

I will send the winner a Hanaho Capcom Coin-Op Classics CD with the 14 Capcom roms (1941 - Block Block - Commando - Exed Exes - Ghouls'n Ghosts - Magic Sword - Mercs - Sections Z - Side Arms - Son Son - Street Fighter (Hyper Fighting) - Strider - U. N. Squadron - Varth).  Good luck everyone
--- saint

Sorry I always do that, it's a side effect of living in this crazy time zone ( New Zealand ).

He he I dunno, I guess what 1 month 2 months? We would have to have some kind of consensus here.
Someone will have to donate free stuff, any ideas?
Sorry about wrong forum, where should I put it? "Everything else" I'm guessing.

OK if anyone wants to take part, please post your pic of your completed micro cab on this thread by September 30, 2003. Under 30cm tall, any materials can be used.
As Alan17 was the first to post to this thread him and me will judge ( there goes any idea of you winning Alan17 lol ).
There will be  prizes but I think the greatest prize will be bragging rights or what about if some nice moderator could give the winner custom status. "MicroMamer" or something similar?

Does anyone else want to judge with me? How about OSCAR? As Oscar is such an expert on the full size models how about judging the micro models with me?

Am I to understand that this is a physical mockup only?  It does not have to work.    Kind of interesting but I would have more fun building something that beeped and had a real display.   Might not run MAME but would run some game(s).

If everyone wants to just build models well I would participate for the practice.

I'd like to participate so I don't lose my touch. Whether I have time or not... I don't honestly know yet.

Is size the only guideline so far?

I mean should we be building only uprights or does anything go as long as it's small enough?

Plus are these designs expected to be original or we base our ideas on prior examples?

A contest like this could probably yeild a couple of potential new cab designs for full-size use!

I don't see why a cocktail couldn't be built as long as it's within the size specs 30cmX30cmX30cm ( or any other kind of MAME machine for that matter, STAR WARS sit down micro cab anyone? )

This would be a mock up only ( you can make it beep if you want lol ).
It won't run any games it's just a model.
Maybe people can show us the MAME machine they would build if only they had a few thousand dollars spare.
Go wild just keep it under 30 cm tall ( and 30 cm wide thankyou he he ).

Apollo, would you reply with a complete and consise description of the rules?

Like when it finished, who is judging, how to submit an entry, rules on an acceptable entry, prizes.  The info is spreadout on here.

Also, how do you know if the cabinet is within the constraints?

Also what are those measurments in inches?  I don't have my TI-85 near me right now to convert.
I'm going scale.  I have 1/8" plastic that will be scale of my 3/4" MDF if the scaler permits it to be within the limits.

edit the first post with this info.

Ahh, 12".  Ok, let me think.  My cabinet is made out of 3/4", that's also 6/8" right?  So if I were to scale it to 1/8" plastic that a 1:6 scale?
My cabinet is 72" tall.  So 12" is how tall my repoduction of my cabinet, to scale, would be, right?

Here's the thing... I love the idea BUT I don't think anyone would do it unless you gave away a good prize for it.  Building a minature cab for me at least, could become quite costly.  :)

You can only use basic parts i.e. buying a miniature TV  or motorcycle and putting it in your cab will not be acceptable.

You mean if we had a 4" lcd lying around we could make that the screen and hook it up to a computer for output?

Sir Poonga
Now you know that's not allowed lol.
This needs to be a competition that everyone can compete in on an even footing i.e you shouldn't have to spend a lot or use costly components to be able to win.

Howard_Casto
I really don't think people on this forum build things to win prizes.
I also think bragging rights are enough to motivate a lot of forum members.
If someone wants to donate a prize that would be awesome but the real fun is in the building.

By the way Saint or Sir Poonga what about custom status for the eventual winner?

What does your full-size machine look like?

BTW, building a minature shouldn't cost that much. I couldn't possibly imagine what materials would cost THAT much... This thing doesn't have to survive a nuclear blast.

You'll have to talk to an admin like saint or pj.  Lowly mods don't have that power.

Thats true, but we don't build them unless we can play with them.  I'm with sirp on this one, if I build one, it's going to be playable.  :)

OK I've changed the rules slightly to a more anything gos style. You can buy whatever you want to make your cab.

If you guys want to make micro cabs that actually work go for it.
To be eligible to win this competition however the computer must be inside the cab, just like a real one ( he he get around that I dare you ). You may have an external power source though.

How you gonna build a 12" machine you can play? The controls would be too small to use even if you could make them work. Plus don't forget this thing will have to be battery-powered if you do plan on making it work.

already figured that one out! i am gonna use my pocket pc. it runs games, it has a built in screen, ohhh yeaahh. thank you Compaq. as for the controls, use the controls i'll hack my game boy pocket and use that lil d-pad adaptor that makes it a digital joystick. oh, on second thought, nevermind. too much time and expense for something like this...

now if a reward or prize was offered...

Yeah they do!
now you gave me an idea, I may have to borrow the pacman's joys:)  I've taken both machines completely apart to fix them.

No guys my gamegear broke ages ago, but where they are really old you can find them for a song if you know where to look.

A person could also use a gba, but those are expensive for such a project.

don't think there is a limit on material.  My idea is to replicate either a pacman cocktail since I have the perfect piece of plexi for that or the clear ms pacman cab on saint's webpage.

Yeah I was thinking of a repro Pacman, not that I can win or anything, just for fun.
Oh well I might go for something else. I've got some ideas.

Look at our rules though... The end product needs to fit inside the model you make.  Could you fit a n64 in it?

how about separating classes into 'working cabs' and 'mock ups'.  Reason is I don't have money now to build a real working little cab, but I could do a fairly nice-looking model I'm sure.

If it comes down to a great looking model and a ok-looking working cab guess which would win?  :P

custom status would be nice... :)

Well i'v made a handheld N64 so this is a piece of cake ;D

but what rule am i breaking? he said you can put anything inside the micro cabinet just as long as it's 30cm x 30cm

Also will you mesure it as 30cm tall if the cocktail cab has legs? or just the body of the unit?

 ;)

Cardboard is acceptable. And the thing must be no more than 12"X12"X12" including extensions such as legs.

There will be no distinction made between working cabs and non-working cabs as far as awards.
This is purely to enable those who cannot fund a fully working cab to be able to compete on an even footing with those who can.
This is about design, construction and artwork.
Remember the idea came from the "mock ups" people were doing to test out their designs.

Admittedly if you can make a fully working scale model cab that would be some achievement but not really what this competition is about. If your fully working cab looks the best then it will win otherwise it won't, simple.

Yes I do, but it's nothing special.  My own variant of luscid's plans.  Of course back then it was one of the first to rip-off his design so it wasn't as bad.  ;)

Probably too early, but how are these prizes handed out?  Like which category gets what prizes?  That will sorta make my decesion of what cab I want to build.  Or is it going to be random?  Or the overall winner takes everyting?

Hmmmm... Let's see...

1. Apollo you have your answer.
2. Toshiba e755 ordered. I'll go ahead and DL mameCE this week too.

Questions:
 • Do controls have to be installed? Or can the be plugged in and hand held?
 • What fun is it if you can't PLAY IT?
 • Is smaller worth more or less points?

I wanna see if I can find TOO FAR. And then go beyond that!

Crap! I thought I was the only person to think of that..

I picked up a coleco tabletop pacman cheap about 2 months ago, figured out the relative screen size and and tore it apart to put into a scale-size custom-built (to the plan dimensions of a midway full-size upright) cabinet.. the PCB/screen of the coleco is one piece and all on the same plane as the two mini joys, so it works perfectly angled in the mini cab config..

anyways, I had the sides and all other parts cut(front, back, speaker panel,etc..) and primed in and out.

I was just getting ready to colour coat the sides and find some sideart...

it'll be beautiful!

unfortunately, the damn thing will be 18" tall...

<$@^&*%!>..

and I certainly didn't think a tabletop pacman was worth $59US on ebay..:-(
oh well, My scale pacman will be great and bring me at least $59 worth of joy..<weak grin>

(and even tho' it's not elegible here, I'll post a pic in projects when it's done..:-)

good luck and have fun..
Pull a year and a half strike- it's over 4eva..
besides, WHL rocks!

OK I have updated the first post on this thread to cover your questions, but here are the answers.

Multiple entries is fine and probably should be encouraged.

Smaller is not better just keep within the size limits.

Everything in your entry has to fit within the size limitations and should be authentic arcade in appearence ( you know what I mean ). This means that the only thing going to your cab is a power lead nothing else. No hand held controls.

There will be winners in the 3 categories and the overall winner will be chosen by Andy17 and myself from the 3 category winners. We have no personal preference for dedicated, cocktail or MAME we will just pick the best as we see it. All the prizes whatever they are will be sent to the overall winner.

I think I will just build a ruler at 6:1 scale and stand it next to my Kangaroo cabinet and take a picture of that instead.

Ooops, I MEANT that I will build a 1:6th scale Kangaroo cabinet, yeah that is the ticket.

Sorry guys looks like i can't make a cabinet :( i have $5 in my bank account and i dont have any cardboard around :\ but i might be able to who knows.

But i thought i should tell you guys that i found some mini arcade buttons (im gonna use them for exit and coin buttons on my real cabinet) there smaller than you finger there about the size of buttons on a ps2 controller.

and they cost like 50cents to $1 but this is in australia only but im sure they have the same in usa etc.

I still have mine, and it's MINT........ but I'm having evil thoughts about tearing it apart.... It would be cool to have a more proper "replica". They're not that much money to buy....

Grr, the temptation!! Too bad I don't know someone with a chewed up handheld classic.  :(

I also have a mint Galaxian.  And I recently got a brand new ViewSonic V37 pocketpc!  It would be a grave injustice to not play the original galaxian inside this little guy.  My problem is taking apart the $$ pda.

Heheh, I just found out about this contest, but I'm way ahead of ya!  8)

I've been working on this for a couple weeks already.  It's working, but unfortunately doesn't look like a real cab.  Now I'll have to make a new shell just for the contest...  ;)  I'm still planning to put the PDA back in this shell for playability though (it's going on my desk at work...)  Would be cool to make a 12" Pac replica with this for the display!  ;D

Dammit all!  I have enough stuff on my plate right now!

BTW, before anyone blows a gasket, the Coleco was missing marquee artwork, and had a cracked PCB when I got it...I'm just giving it new life as a real Pac-Man game.

I actually may be interested....compaq says it has 32 megs of memory and 16 megs of flash memory, but dosen't say anything about the flash memory being the expandable type. Would you be able to clarify? Can you use the typical flash cards?

Good point Frosty, only 27 day to go.
Mine is constructed, just needs art and bezel and cp and coin door lol.
I'm guessing we are going to see some entries soon.

I just started on mine, finally go materials.  And I got my ddragon2 marquee so I can take a pic of that and will have full art :)  I thought about it, I'm not going to photosop out the cigarette burns on the cpo, it's more authentic that way :)

Not an authentic one...

But might be a GREAT base!

I would like to see someone build one out of a lunchbox!  Get a few cool old lunchboxes.  The old kind like a pacman one.

then have the lcd screen on the top 1/2.

then a computer on the bottom.

The hard part will be the controls.  Buttons should be ok (joystick depth would be the problem I'm guessing).  But the joystick??  Is there any joysticks that you can turn over or bend down?  Something that you could close the lid, and have everything hidden away?

I haven't played with small controls.

If by really small you 6"x6", not really small enough to fit in a 12"x4"x3" scale model of a real cab, but you could make a cool desktop mame with one...

Damn, and I just got my micro CP and bezel artwork from Kinko's too!  (Looks sweet BTW, probably the best print I've ever got from them!)  Thought I was gonna be the only one with an entry for a minute there...

Ah, well, it's for the best, as I just started looking for work again and probably would not have time to apply the art properly and get my entry all cleaned up and photographed...  Things should be better in a few weeks, and I'll definitely have 'er all shined up for Halloween!  MUAHAHAHAAA!   ;D

whew, extended, thanks.  I had no time this month on mine.  Ijust have the paper templates made.  A grandpa dieing, quarter finals, radiator on car leaking (going two weeks right now without a car, it is starting to get too cold to ride bike...).  Too many things to list.  Plus I've been spending my free time on controls.dat.  Almost done.  Just need to make a few parts more idiot proof.

Doubt I'll have time to put it together now.

I was gonna hack my sega gamegear to make a micro cab, but I get the feeling the competition is going to be very tough...

micro-pac

Well, I guess I'll just get the ball rolling here since it's so close, and I'm going to be too busy this week to remember to post this on Friday...

Here she is!   ;D  The fruit of my last few weeks' labor -- micro-pac.  While it's not a scratchbuilt scale replica of an arcade cab, it was a VERY involved conversion project that took a lot of planning, and a lot of trial and error.  What it is, is a very small, fully functional MAME machine, built into the shell of an old Coleco table-top electronic Pac-Man.

When I was in 5th grade, someone brought one of these to class.  I was a geek with major Pac-Man fever, so I ran over to check it out.  The casing looked arcade-like, cast in the rough shape of a GI Joe-sized arcade upright, boasting the same sideart that I was familiar with.

As I approached, I imagined some miniaturized CRT screen playing the same game that I had played in the arcade, but was disappointed when I got close enough to see the rather abstract LED graphics and grating sound effects...  This wasn't Pac-Man at all!  The maze was red, the animation was crude, and the ghosts had dots and little pac-men inside them!  It was the biggest gaming disappointment I'd yet to experience (until the Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man was released some months later...)

About a year ago, the topic of micro-cabs came up in an old thread.  I was intrigued, and acquired an old non-working Coleco Pac-Man, just like the one I'd seen at school 20 years before.  It was missing the marquee sticker, but I knew where to get the artwork to reproduce one...  I also bought a Cassiopeia E-100 PDA for $40 from ebay, with the intent of hacking it into the Coleco, giving the little game new life, hosting an arcade-authentic version of the same game.  But once I got the PDA, I found it in such good shape (and it was so useful) that I felt it a waste to make it into a micro-MAME machine.  It was outdated though, and I eventually opted to buy a new Dell Axim X5 for PDA use, freeing up the Cassiopeia for it's original intent...  ;D

The first challenge was to interface the Coleco's controls with the Cassiopeia.  I did this by first identifying the ground and NO contacts for all the switches on the PDA, then soldering ribbon cable to the PCB traces.  Some of these were quite tricky to connect, as the connections inside the PDA are very delicate and closely spaced.  After testing the contacts with a multimeter, I squirted a few drops of hot glue to protect the delicate solders, and closed the thing up.

The appropriate wires were soldered to points on the stripped Coleco board, and a quick test showed that all buttons worked correctly.  I added a few additional buttons to the Coleco's control panel for exit, menu, and fire, and two more on the back of the shell for reset and power.

The PDA's cradle was mounted where the Coleco's battery compartment used to be, and the PDA was secured to it using hot glue at strategic locations.  This supports the PDA inside the Coleco, and allows it to receive power, charge the batteries, and sync with my PC for uploading software and roms.

Next, I designed a bezel frame from black foamcore board.  This fits around the edges of the PDA, and allows the printed and laminated bezel artwork to fit flush against the front of the PDA.  The artwork is scanned from an orignal Pac-Man upright, modified slightly to fit with the constraints of the Coleco/PDA.  This frame was secured inside the top-half of the Coleco with some generously applied hot glue.  The edges of the artwork match perfectly with the edges of the PDA's backlit screen.

In order to make sense of the additional buttons on the control panel, I created a new overlay, using original Pac-Man cabinet artwork.  The look is in keeping with the original overlay.  It was laser printed at Kinkos on a Fiery.  The Kinko's I go to has self-serve lamination, so I was able to slip a backing sheet in behind the printed page, and laminated the two together.  Once it cooled, I cut off the edges of the laminate, producing a one-sided laminated label that is more receptive to adhesive than normal 2-sided lamination.

I punched all the necessary holes in the label using round craft punches.  I coated both the control panel and label with professional grade rubber cement, let it dry, then pressed the label in place for a permanent bond.  I hinged the label to the CP with a piece of tape before joining, so that it would line up perfectly (dried rubber cement bonds instantly and you only get one chance to get it right.

As a finishing touch, I added a stylus clip to the back of the Coleco, using a plastic cable mount clip and some hot glue.  I don't want any fingerprints or scratches on that touchscreen!  >:(

That's the idea.  I still have to do some rewiring on the switch, but that's the way it will work.  The switch was originally the power switch on the Coleco, so I had to find something else to do with it...

Here are some screenshots of some of the other games:

Here's a closeup showing the detail in the screen (the colors are much stronger in person and the image is much sharper.)  The TFT screen even looks like it has scanlines!

Be warned that TFT screens aren't very suitable as cocktail screens, since they are only meant to be viewed from a certain angle.  That is why I angled the screen more upright, rather than laying it down in line with the original screen.  Any other angle and the screen loses color and becomes milky.

We need to put these in our own mini cabinets, though; it's be a shame to start chewing into all these Coleco handhelds...

1up, have one question, and I want you to answer honestly  ;D.  Do the few games you have running actually play at full speed with sound?  I got a new ViewSonic v37 with 400mhz xscale processor (must be like 4 times faster than that cassiopia) and with the processor cranked at max performance, I still can't get any roms to play at 100% speed with sound correctly.  Sure I could live with jerky games with crappy sound, or no sound and 100% speed, but it wouldn't be much fun to play.

Anyway, just wondering how playable your setup really is.  Also wondering if you tried robotron with the dual joysticks  ;D.

According to the guy who made MAME-CE3, PDA sound just sucks, period.  I have found this is the same on both my 133mhz Cassiopeia and my 400mhz Dell Axim, whether I'm running PocketNES, MAMECE-10x or MAME-CE3.  Apparently, there are too few handles for the programmers to take advantage of, so the sound emulation is some kind of cheat.

I really don't mind not having sound, just as long as the emulation runs smoothly.  So the answer is, most of the games will run at or near 100% with sound off, some will run pretty well with it on, but the quality runs from crappy to unlistenable.

(Speaking of unlistenable, my wife is watching Temple Of Doom on DVD, and it really brings out just how awful that movie was with all of Willy's annoying screaming and bitching...  >:( )

BTW, I am running MAME-10X on the Cassiopeia, since it's optimized for the older Casios and runs the smoothest.  My Dell Axim runs everything like a dream on MAME-CE3, even games that MAME-10X doesn't support.  However, the dell tends to crop some games that fit perfectly on the Casio's screen.  Lower res I guess?  ???

Oh yeah, I don't think Robotron works with this version of MAMECE, so I dunno.  I know the diagonals probably won't work with the Cassiopeia, so it would be hard to play...  I have tried Battlezone with the dual sticks and it works fine, though vector games tend to be a bit sluggish.

I think one of the newer GBAs with the backlit screens would be ideal.  If you get a ROM burner and a blank cartridge, you can put PocketNES on it with a bunch of NES roms.  Most of the NES ports of the arcade classics were pretty close to the originals.  Pac-Man for instance looks almost identical...

As much as I hate to be a party pooper, although 1UP's mini cab is an incredible achievement, for the purposes of this contest it's certainly not unbeatable.

The contest rules note that whether the cabinet works or not is irrelevant.  What's important is that the cabinet "should be authentic arcade in appearence".

well if you guys wanna make a cool mini arcade cab you should go out and buy a sony PS1 acreen then get a gunboy or simular unit.

The gunboy is 1 of them nes in a n64 controller but the gunboy has like 80 arcade games like galaga space invaders etc.

It also takes famicon games and you can use an adapter to play nes games on it.

This is how we make a NESp (Nintendo entertainmen system portable)
as apart of Bens board we make these and snes handhelds n64 whatever kind we want.

Thats where that ps1 pic came from above ;) that was a handheld ps1 called psp (afew months after wired mag did a thing on the psp sony said they would release a psp 3 months later think about it ;))

www.classicgaming.com/vcsp

he's currently working on a NESp right now its quite an interesting site but he makes and sells atari 2600 handhelds :)

Okay, here we go: the first coin-op video game, Computer Space.

Building this cab was a challenge!  Unfortunately, I didn't start taking pictures until I was almost done.

The first task was to build a rough core.  A model of the Computer Space cabinet was built up from a plastic phone jack housing, balsa wood, cardboard, wire, and masking tape, ending up looking like a junkyard version of Johnny 5 from "Short Circuit".  A clay layer was added over this, painstakingly shaped, and allowed to dry.  The clay cracked and shrunk in places, and ended up looking like this:

To smooth out the model, I added frosting:

Okay, it's not actually frosting; it's a color changing spackle that goes on pink and turns white as it dries.

Meanwhile, the art for the control panel and bezel were measured and printed on an HP 8550 Color LaserJet printer.  Finally, the model was painted with automotive metal-flake paint, just as the original cabinets were.

Here is a closer shot of the control panel, bezel and montor:

And heres a player's-eye view of the screen:

All in all, the project took about eight hours to complete.

Well, I did say that the working cab was something I was already working on before the contest anyway...my scale model entry will be posted soon...the glue is drying as we speak!  ;)

OK, I'm seriously past my bedtime, but here's my final entry, the first arcade game I remember seeing as a kid: Space Invaders Deluxe, with actual reflected image over illuminated backdrop.  Approx dimensions: 10" H x 5.5" D x 4.5" W.  Materials: Black Foamcore board, black artists tape (for t-molding  :) ), plastic model tubing (buttons), CD jewel cases (plexi) paper and transparencies printed on Fiery at Kinko's.  Powered by 4.5v batteries (external).

I actually built those tiny buttons from styrene hobby tubing, those aren't printed!  :o

Here's one the room lights reduced.

The screen is transparency, backed with Canon backlit film to diffuse the light.  Lit by 7 white LEDs.  The backdrop is made in 2 pieces (the blue moonbase and the orange sky are separate) lit by 3 colored LEDs each.

Here's a better angle to show how the horizontally mounted "screen" reflects onto the "plexi" (made from a cd jewel case cover) just like the real thing!

The coin slots are rigged with red LEDs, but I forgot to attach the wires for them, and don't have time to open it up and fix it.  Also didn't have time to install 3 LEDs to light the marquee, will do that at a later date!  Sorry for the quality of the photos, it's almost 2AM here and I can hardly type...  Not sure of the time to complete, but I spend every night over the last week working on it to get it right!  I really like the look of the SI Deluxe cab, and the game is one of my all time faves.  This just might be the first actual arcade game that I'd want to buy for my game room!  :D

BTW, I do like the Computer Space model!

Cheers  ;D

you guys must have the hands of surgeons!   There would either be huge thumbprints all over mine or the severed thumb inside the thing from using an exacto knife in too close of quarters!

Phenomenal Work!  Although admittedly the computer space one did make me hungry for some reason??? mmmm frosted arcade cab.....

Because it isn't even remotely as good as that!

It was a Last Starfighter cab... I had to guess on large chunks of it, and then redo it when the pictures came out on eBay and I saw just how far off I was.

The primary material is basswood, at a scale of 1 inch to 1 foot, so the sheet is 1/16th of an inch thck to be equivalent to 3/4" thick.  But all of the art is simple paper on wood; no transparencies, lights, lamination, etc.  Nothing to compare to that...

Well, I've been thinking of something cooler: a Last Starfighter game, mimicing as much of the game that we can actually see and that is MAME-cabinet friendly.  But I won't even consider it until I finish DOSCab Jukebox...

Well, unfortunately I just didn't have the time, I spent most of my time working on controls.dat or fixing my car (what a POS!).

Here's as far as I got on the cardboard mockup.  I ran out of ink and printed the bezel and marquee too large, otherwise they would be on the mockup.

The control panel, bezel, and sideart: guess where those came from:)  I now have a replacement marquee finally too that I got for $1 off ebay.  But the marquee in the mame32 pack was good enough for this size.  I tried ot take a pic of my marquee but there was way too much glare, even with the flash diffused.  partly to get the best looking shot for this I had to tae the pic straight on giving the most reflections.  Grrrrrr.

Edit: Props to anyone who can name the the games in the background :)

Here is my entry. It has been complete since about 4 days before the last deadline. It is a working Pacman cab. It stands a little less than 12 inches tall. I used one of those Namco 5 game classic joystick things that run on 4 AA's and plugs into a TV found here

http://www.jakkstvgames.com/namco.html. The screen is an LCD rca TV with A/V jack. The joystick is a miniature 4 way that I found by luck in an electronic parts store. The buttons I had from a project in high school back in 1987.

marquee lit up

here is a screen shoot they didn't come out very good

here is the joystick

here is the board

here is the coin door

I found it at a electronics parts house called ACE electronics in Houston TX.They have a bunch of old surplus stuff and alot of new stuff to. I went looking for some switchs for work when right in front of my eyes was that tiny joystick. I asked if they had any more and was told no.but it was brand new so someone must be able to get more. the odd thing was there was no manufacture name on it just the $10.00 price tag .Kinda high to me.

The joystick was not marked 4 or 8 way but after testing it with a multimeter it is 4 way only. It has a  center common pin and each direction has a pin unlike a real joystick that has the 2 connectors for each switch . I lucked out because the tv joystick game each switch was triggered by connecting to ground.

That Pac-Man is sweet!  I wanted to make my Space Invaders playable, or at least with an animated display by putting in my new PDA, but then I realized that the picture would be reversed when it got reflected...  Actually, though, it's nice that I can use it as decoration without having to mess up my PDA.

BTW, my micro-pac is a hit at work!  I go to my desk in the morning and find it already running...  :D  I introduced the idea of bringing in my full-sized cab for a few months, and everyone went nuts...these are the guys who came to my original cab-warming party a year ago...heheh...

So when does the judging begin?  The suspense is killing me!!  ;)

Funny what a lot of free time will do to you...my wife saw me building this and she was like "so are you going to put your mini-pac in this now?" and I'm like "no, it's just for decoration."  She could kind of understand making a small working Mame machine, but why the hell would someone spend so much time on a small non-working model of a cab?  The answer: extreme boredom!  ;)

No more free time for me though, last month I was off, this week I'm hard at work 10+ hours a day.  It's all good though, the studio is two blocks from the beach on the Santa Monica promenade (a big outdoor mall), and it's right above a Hooters...   ;D

I'll  try to get to ACE electronics this week and see if anyone else there knows if they can get some more of these or if they even know where they got it from. Also a quick note about the miniature joystick I used. Be careful if you solder to it. The pins are not suppose to be soldered. They appear to plug into some kind of jack . I soldered to it anyway and the down direction didn't work. After looking at it I realized that when I heated it the plastic melted and the pin shifted to the side and it would not make contact.I reheated it and straighted it and it works just fine now.

Those things aren't that mini, according to the dmensions!

The dimensions are 85 x 50 x 112 mm.  If my conversion rate is right, that's 3.4" x 2" x 4.5".  A Happ Ms Pac-Man balltop is 3.6" x 3.15" x 4.26".

So unless I missed something there are 3 categories:

Best Reproduction

(Defender) - Not sure if the user "Houdini" made this one, but if so I would say it should be in the running.  See it on Pg2.
(Pac Man)
(Space Invaders)
(Computer Space)
(Double Dragon II)

Best Cocktail

(No Entries)

Best Mame

(Pac Man Conversion)

Is that all of them?  No one did a cocktail?

Although I really like it, i think the pacman conversion is automatically disqualified.

It's not a reproduction, it's not a cocktail and it's not a scale model of an innovative new cab design.  Simply put, it's not a model at all, it's just a cool toy 1up made.  Again don't take this the wrong way, I think it's really cool, it just has nothing to do with the competition.

But yeah only 3 entries, kinda disappointing isn't it?

After they extended the deadline I was going to do a micro Ms pacman Cocktail to go with my micro pacman upright .I decided against it because I thought there would have been alot of cocktail entries. To tell the truth I though there would have been alot more entries in all the categories.

Well, as much as I wanted to win that spinner, I think Computer Space is out of the running.  It actually looks better than the pictures make it seem at normal viewing distance, but the closeups and the metal flake paint make every surface imperfection visible, and I should have taken more care trimming the bezel and put "glass" over the front.

The Defender is a great Monopoly piece, but lacks any detail.  The Double Dragon is a nice start, but is incomplete.

That leaves Space Invaders Deluxe and Pac-Man.

Space Invaders Deluxe was a more complicated machine to duplicate, and it was pulled off very nicely.  The buttons were a nice alternative to the expected printed control panel. That mirroring system is brilliant, and the artwork is spot-on.  The lighting is gorgeous, although I don't thnk it counts.

The Pac-Man, however, is such a perfect replica that one coud mistake it for a real machine with a giant ruler next to it.  That micro coin door is a nice touch!  We can't count the fact that it works, though, and that actually hurts it silghtly as it now has the wrong type of joystick.

Every minute I think it's clear who the winner is, and five minutes later I change my mind.  If I could, I'd split up the prizes or beg the donators to donate a second set, but I don't think either of those is likely.  I'm glad I don't have to make the decision!

I think I have to disagree.  One of the categories was or is MAME cab.  I think that the PAC conversion qualifies in that regard.  I actually thought it was quite funny that 1UP "hacked" a "classic" pac man cab for a MAME project.  It does indeed play multiple games.  Looking at the rules, I don't see anything stating that the whole thing has to be fabricated.

One possible point of contention is the requirement, "...and should be authentic arcade in appearence ( you know what I mean ). This means that the only thing going to your cab is a power lead nothing else. No hand held controls."

While I suppose you could argue that 1up's conversion is not "authentic arcade in appearance" that statement is qualified later by a comment about the power and no hand held controls.  One for the judges to decide I think.

Anyway, they are all cool.  I feel like a dope that I did not do one, (20/20 hindsight).  I sure could use that spinner and no offense, but I am pretty sure I would have wasted you guys! ;D

No your missing the point... it's a MODEL competition.... that's not a scale model of anything... read the categories and descriptions of the contest again and maybe you'll understand this time. The mame category was for the best MODEL of an original mamecab design.

Regardless the voting is over and 1up won with his legitimate entry... I would also say that the judges agreed with me as his other isn't even listed.

Congrats 1up and everyone!

Well, I didn't really expect to win with the Mame conversion, and quite honestly I would have felt guilty if I did, as it was most of the way done when the contest was announced.  All I did afterward was to add artwork and clean up some of the construction.

I'm glad that the Space Invaders was able to impress Apollo enough to earn me a new spinner!  (I'm going to need a second one when I move my main machine to work this month...)  I was kind of worried there, because the Pac-Man and Computer Space were very well done!

I had the feeling that 1Up was kidding around with the Pacman and I knew that his real entry was on the way ( he hinted as much ) so I didn't really count it. As Howard pointed out it wasn't really a valid entry. Maybe this could be an annual event, I'm sure that the interest is there now thanks to the entries this time around? Any thoughts on that anyone?

OH yea! Count me in! With a year to plan and build there should be more entries. I can see it now I'll have a arcade full of 12" cabs in a few years.

Hmm...again, sorry to split hairs but I am afraid I have to disagree again.  No where in the first post by Apollo that outlines the rules, is the word "model" used.  The MAME category was NOT for the best MODEL of an original mamecab  design, it was...

"Categories will be:
Best reproduction of a dedicated cab
Best cocktail
Best MAME cab"

Look, I am not going to belabor the facts anymore, and I am sure most everyone here knew what was expected etc.  All I am saying is that the way the rules were presented, if someone wanted to press the point, 1UP's conversion does meet all of the requirements unless there is an addendum to the rules somewhere else in this thread.  You might want to qualify what must be fabricated and what does not have to be.  In the micro PAC, he used an lcd and joysticks.  Those were not fabricated.  If 1UP cut the plastic up on that pac game and used it to form a new cab would that count?  If I made a cab out of a soup can, is that acceptable.

Anyway, again I love the entries, heck yea I am interested in another round (although a year might be too long, how about 3 mo?) and no, I would not be such a stickler in the next round regardless of who won.

Man I gotta say that all the entries were AWESOME.

1UP's tabletop-conversion is one of the best MAME cabs I've ever seen...large, small, or otherwise.  Quite amazing. There's the MAME can award right there.

Team OBryan, that reproduction is SWEET.  Since it's so spot on and working, I gotta hand it to ya.

and I say the Computer Space cabinet gets the cocktail award...cause back then they didn't even have definitions for cabs.  Plus it's cool, you know you want one.  ;)

to think I was going to enter the cocktail category with a pacman juice glass filled with a pina colada...I think by default I might have won.

congrats to everyone!

ps I know the judging is independent third party and I know my vote doesn't count.  Just giving props to the hard work.

Your not very good at comprehension.....  to quote literally the very first sentence.

"There seems to be a fair amount of interest in micro cab mock ups either for testing out dimensions of future MAME cab projects or just for fun."

micro cab mock ups = models

And even if you didn't get that the further descriptions of the rules explains that the cab has to be "arcade authentic"  and pretty much scratch built.  In otherwords no conversions period and no "inauthentic" buttons, designs and controls.

Everyone understands this completely and there has been no other arguments in your defense except for your own.  The only reason I bring it up is because I would hate for you to make an entry next year like the pacman conversion and fruitlessly argue when it didn't win, like you are now.  :)

I mean even apollo agreed with me and he's a frikkin judge, chill man, your point is mute.

While "mock-up" is a synonym for "model" it does not follow that using an exisiting "cabinet", in this case the pac man toy game, is grounds for disqualification under the rules as outlined in the thread..  1UP changed many things on the "cabinet".  At what point has he made enough modifications that would constitute a "mock-up" of an actual cab.  What if one wanted to make a full sized version of the toy pac man cabinet?  Could they not then use the toy's structure for their cabinet?

As I stated earlier, the "arcade authentic" line would be a decent point of contention IF it were not qualified in the sentence that followed, "Everything in your entry has to fit within the size limitations and should be authentic arcade in appearence ( you know what I mean ). This means that the only thing going to your cab is a power lead nothing else. No hand held controls."

Note that it does not say, "..."arcade authentic"  and pretty much scratch built.  In otherwords no conversions period and no "inauthentic" buttons, designs and controls."

You added most of that verbage to the sentence.  I notice that in most of your replies you have done the same thing, adding what you felt the line meant rather than what the line actually read.

I did not see anything "going to 1ups cab" nor do I think it qualified as having "hand held controls".

As I stated earlier, I am very aware of the spirit of the terms and rules of the competition, and if I had a point of contention on an entry I were to make, first I would ask, second I would not get upset if after the fact my entry was disqualified as 1ups was.  Heck I would be pretty proud of putting the dang thing together, who cares about a spinner.

While Apollo, as the judge has the final say in such an area, and as such the argument is moot, I can assure you it is a valid argument.  The issue is simply, "What constitutes a mock-up?"  Does a model mean I cannot use any prefabricated parts?  What parts can I use?

There is a Simpson's diorama that has a couple of cabinets in it, if i take one of those and make it a Spy Hunter cab, is that leagal?

So the pacman toy was not built, it was modified.  It wasn't modified that much either.

So the pacman toy was not built, it was modified.  It wasn't modified that much either.

Hey!  I don't mind not winning with my micro-pac,  but I spent far more time on it than I did on the Space Invaders!  I cut out major sections of the toy; completely dismantled and cut up the original PCB; designed, printed, punched and mounted a completely new CP sticker and marquee; installed the marquee on a scratchbuilt supporting frame; installed a stylus holder and various buttons; modified the joysticks to work in 8-way; and installed a completely different display and electronics from the original.  There's more 1UP in there than Coleco at this point.  If that's called "not modifying it much", I live on a different planet than you...  :P

Not to beat on any dead horses here, but I have to agree with space cadet. As the rules were given the micro-pac should have qualified for the contest...in my opinion. Maybe I wanted to explore the possibility of building a MAME bartop based on the mini-pac...wouldn't that make it a "model?" OK, I know it's not in line with the "spirit" of the contest...I was just thinking out loud...

I wouldn't have even bothered but I dislike the way Howard tends to bully his way through an argument with so little opposition.

I think the mini-pac was an extremely creative effort and it gave me some ideas. If 1UP hadn't entered it, I would not have seen it and wouldn't have had my own creativity whacked upside the head. And that to me is the whole point. If you want to tighten the rules fine. If you want to more closely define what a legitimate model is great. I'm just one who believes stretching the boundaries of the box is a good thing. And, as I stated, as the rules were given, I believe it qualifies. So, go ahead, shrink the box.

Maybe I'm "missing the point" or I'm just "not very good at comprehension;" anyway, the point is probably "mute."  ;D

There is...and it's not just you, because I also don't see grounds for disqualification.  It may not be the best entry out of all that were submitted, but it didn't violate any of the rules as posted (and it's still damned cool!.)

I think most of us that have been here a while are just too tired to go down that road because we already know where it leads  :P

OK, when I decided to enter the thing, I was not planning on building anything else (i.e. the Space Invaders) because the rules stated:

"Any type of microcab can be built. It can be an exact reproduction of your favourite dedicated cab ( including cocktail or sit down cabs ) or a reproduction of your own MAME cab ( or your dream MAME cab ) or something completely different."

I think my first entry fits nicely into the last category.  If it's not a repro of an existing dedicated cab or a MAME cab, what else is there?  The micro-pac is a working MAME cab, built into a toy that was based on an existing dedicated cab.  While not a scale model by any means, it is something completely different.  There was no definition or limitation put on what "something completely different" really means, as long as it was in the arcade game genre and fit in the required dimensions.

I did feel compelled to do the Space Invaders because I felt kinda guilty that my first entry was something I would have done anyway.  I thought I should do something specifically for the contest.  Plus, it seemed like it would be a cool little project!

Let's end this before it gets nasty.  The contest is over, and I still got my prize so I'm not complaining one bit.  ;D

Ended, yes let's let it go...I really don't want to leave a bad taste in anyone's mouth as I think the contest was awesome, the entries were superb, and the vendors were more than generous for providing the goodies.

I would love to see another contest (as I have a few ideas for entries  :)) and don't want to see anyone shy away for fear of further contorversy.

I think the key is just create some notes regarding acceptable entries for each category and most important what each category would be judged on.  While authentic arcade reproduction may score higher for a faithful scale model of an actual commercial cab, the MAME category might give bigger points for originality and imagination.  Points across the board could be awarded for craftsmanship and amount of "ground up" fabrication.

So let's have another contest and give me a chance to blow you guys away!!!  :) :D ;D

Ok just to try and settle this, the point was to build something that if it was blown up to full size wouldn't look out of place in an arcade, I think the spirit of the competition was pretty clear really. Imagine blowing 1Ups first entry up to "full size", pretty funny looking isn't it? No offense to 1Up of course as he did great work on both.

Just wanted to let everyone know I just received my second place price From the contest today. I was amazed at how fast RandyT got it out. Only 89 hours from the winners being announced till I received the prize. I can't wait to start me next project so I can try it out.

You should put that in the rules next time!  ;)  Seriously, next time there should probably be a category for playable micro-mame machines, that can be in any shape as long as they are functional.  If you think about it, a working scale model of an existing cab probably isn't very playable at that size, even though technically it works, as the controls are mounted in the center rather than lower down where they're more stable.

Something shaped more like a tabletop game, or the top-half of a cab, would actually be more practical, and it needs to be made out of heavier materials than a scale model, for strength and stability.  This would also be more likely to get entries, as a scale model isn't much use after the contest is over...

That should acually be a whole separate contest.  I believe that the reason Apollo didn't count anything for working cabs was that he didn't want to get into an arms race over who could spend the most money on PDA's, tiny TV's, etc. To judge the winner of such a category against someone's foamboard mockup would be unfair.
