Vs: Vewlix-inspired 76" projector setup [Planning]
« on: August 22, 2010, 11:25:30 pm »
An update (55" RPTV -> 76" Projector) to my weekend project from a couple weeks back made me realize big screens are full of win. I also like the direction the youths are going these days with the modern, Japanese-influenced cabinets, so I've decided to give that a go.

Requesting input on some color schemes... the grey that is consistent across all schemes will be acrylic so I can play with a little backlighting (and a gazillion led-wizeseses).

It looks to me like you're gunning for a stand-at height rather than the Vewlix' sitdown height? I don't play fighter games myself, so I don't have a preference for standing/sitting, but for all other arcade games, sitting down is a much nicer position IMHO. If you go for that, make sure you have lots of leg room. Also, this looks very nice!  :applaud:

Holy heck, who DOESN'T love the yellow/white affair?  That... ...is inspiring.

Gotta love Vewlix style builds. I do like the classic red scheme but there's also a blue one which looks cool. Have to agree with emphatic about the sitting down position, especially for fighting games.

I have to emphatically disagree with the sitting down position.  If you are adequately caffeinated, and into your game, you need to be standing up!  I remember seeing stools in (very few) arcades when I was growing up, and thought that it defeated the whole purpose.

 ;) ;D

I must be getting old! I have a stand up cab and sit down Vewlix, definitely prefer the latter for fighters and can concentrate for longer without my aching back distracting me. Maybe I should wear a girdle ??!!

Thanks all for the insight and votes!

It looks to me like you're gunning for a stand-at height rather than the Vewlix' sitdown height?

I'm finding myself totally conflicted with the sit/stand debate. I, like Mr. Elphinstone, *never* played on stools in the arcade... But I accidentally made my original weekend-build prototype a couple inches too low, to the point where it requires a stool for comfortable play, and it turns out I kind of like it... Felt a little like sofa or PC gaming.

For the seated position I am a bit concerned about the trackball, which I don't have mounted in my prototype. I can't even remotely imagine playing TB games sitting, especially in group settings.

I might take the CP back to the drawing board a bit.

I'm following your fantastic build, Mr. SpaceHedgehog, and the idea you have about storing a KB/usb ports in those cubbies sounds like a great idea. In my base design, the kb/mouse would need to reside in a drawer under the CP.

I used to hate sitdown cabinets. Now I have two (EGRET IIs) and can't stand standing. You can concentrate much better IMHO. If the stand is only to hold the panel (not housing any hardware) then why not make it adjustable? Get the best of both worlds. The "screen" is projected, so that won't matter. I voted for the white (metallic). The yellow white is nice as well, gives me some Crazy Taxi vibes.  :afro:

What colors do you and whomever you are sharing the space with like?  Try to use those colors.  Do you prefer sit down or stand up?  At the end of the day it really doesn't matter what we think, it is you that has to live with the cabinet so choose something you like.

The stand-up/sit-down will be a personal choice (unless I can figure out an elegant method to make it adjustable, per Mr. emphatic), for sure... as for the color scheme, those are the colors I like, I'm just conflicted (and the lady of the house feels red/black is a bit overdone, though I think it's for good reason).

I'm also fishing for color scheme ideas, in case anyone has 'em.

Godspu has done a gorgeous metallic flake white on this single player CP:
http://www.godspu.com/pics/pink_pearl/

Which is what I kind of envisioned with the "Whitey McWhite" version from sketchup. I think that might turn out especially sweet  with white/clear Seimitsus, clear bubble top, and frosted-white GGG TB + my aforementioned pile of LED-Wizeseseses.

Wow that looks so nice. It's like the rims of the buttons emerge from the overlay:

Whatever you do I'm sure it'll be tasty. White is pretty easy to fit into any setting, and dust will be pretty invisible. :D

Holy crap, how the hell did I miss this??? Since '99? 11 years and I never stumbled into it. Although in my defense, 99 was when my kid was born, so that year and the couple after it are a sleep deprived blur (Blur!).

Interested to see how this runs out. Wife and I are doing the same kind of build, but we are stuck on CP design right now (as seeing as we have no power tools, I am waiting to go to my parents).

I am liking the Bubble Bee X Bruce Lee colors.
