« on: April 15, 2010, 03:29:11 pm »
Have just seen in it the cinema and WOW  :applaud:

It's been a long time since i've been entertained that good in the cinema.

I'd give it 4,5 out of 5.

I've read it, just waiting for the weekend so I can go see it. Definitely looking forward to it, even if it has some differences from the comic (which wasn't even finished when they started making the movie).

Edit: Son of a....
My local theater isn't getting this.

Just got done watching it at the theater my friend works at.

Tomorrow, I shall pay to watch it again.  At a different theater.

I really can't wait to see it.  I've been excited for it for months.  I can't watch it for a few weeks still cos finals are upon me, but soon . . .

I read the first 5 issues and then stopped because of this.. fearful that they'd screw it up..  but after watching the movie, it was pretty spot-on.  Well for the first 5.

Now I must go back and read the last 3!!

..this is how the Watchmen should've been done.

I liked the watchmen as well, and in a former life, I was assistant manager of a comics show, for what that's worth. But I never really got into the comic proper. Dark Knight. Check. Flaming Carrot. Double Check. Concrete. Yep. Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters. Oh yeah.

But Watchmen. ehhh..

Don't shoot!

Oh seriously??  I'll have to hit up the comic book store tomorrow.  Which ending did you like better, the comic or movie?  Wait did you end up seeing the movie yet?

As for the Watchmen,  it was cool and all..  but there's something called suspension of disbelief, and that movie just didn't deliver for me.  :dunno  Left me with a lot of questions, which only were later answered AFTER having to read the book.. shouldn't have to be that way.. imo

Wait did you end up seeing the movie yet?

Nope, going this coming weekend.

As for Watchmen, I'm glad I read it, because everyone who went with us that didn't know the story were LOST. I could tell while watching the movie that people who hadn't read it wouldn't completely get it.

I still love the movie, though. The motion comic is great, too.

Did they kick all the mormons out of the MPAA or something?  How did they get away with a title like 'Kick Ass'?  I can remember when South Park From Hell had to change their title, for crying out loud.

Why would anyone want to kick a donkey anyway?

IMDB says this:

It's a widely reported myth that the original title of the film was "South Park: All Hell Breaks Loose" and the MPAA forced Trey Parker and Matt Stone to change the title, stating that all movie titles must be G-rated (despite the fact that there are many movies with the word "hell" in them - Hellraiser (1987), Hellfighters (1968), From Hell (2001), etc.). The story comes directly from Parker and Stone who claim that they submitted the film with the original title and were forced to change it. Richard Taylor, a spokesman for the MPAA, denies that any film was ever submitted with that title and that the MPAA did not reject the use of the word "hell" in the title.

No.  I actually heard good things about it, though.  Also, I think the MPAA is about the most moronic entity on the planet.  Seriously . . . a few seconds of bare breasts, or say the "f word" a couple times and you have an automatic R rating.  But the Lord of the Rings can show a battle between humans and Orcs where humans are first realistically (and graphically) killed with swords and spears.  And then hundreds of severed human heads are catapulted over the city walls to demoralize the people inside.  It shows all this.  It looks totally real.

Yeah . . . PG-13

Totally mind-boggling.  So don't get me wrong . . .   ;D

preview's looked retarted to me and I was wondering how they could actually charge people money for stuff like that.

things they get away with nowaday's... I am not suprised that people actually may like something like that though.

for me it looks like a tmnt type for 15 year olds and I dont plan on watching it ever.

The green band trailers don't give a proper idea of what the movie is like. Read the 8-issue run of it and you'll see it's NOT for kids.

Just got back from Kick-ass. Holy ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, that was a great movie. It was different enough from the comic that I enjoyed it on its own merits and actually didn't have any real issues with the differences.

Agreed.  I finally got around to the comic book store today.  I had to read the first 5 again, man I had forgotten some.  The only thing I liked better in the comic were the costume designs.. Well mainly for Red Mist and Big Daddy.  Other than that, this is my favorite movie for this year so far.

Saw the movie yesterday, wow was it good, and surprisingly thought provoking too.   It's a great deconstruction of the superhero genre.  I'm inclined to want to see it a second time in the theatre.

Way more violent than i imagined it would be. And Hit Girl saying the C word  :o

edit: how sad is that. Hit Girl kills dozens of people, and I was mored shocked by her language! Talk about desensitised...

this movie is nothing like the trailers.  I was seriously expecting a slightly more realistic Spy Kids.

Which is why I hated the trailers. As a fan of the comics, I knew those trailers were a terrible representation of the film. The red band trailers did a better job, though.

Judging by his attitude on twitter and the way his entire review was written, the one star was meant to anger the fanboys.

It has 76% on Rottentomatoes and has an 8.4/10 on IMDb (in 124th place in the Top 250).

The subject matter limits mass acceptance so I don't think they ever thought they'd get huge numbers.  Add the bad trailer and you get the box office numbers.  This is Lionsgate though, I like that they take risks where other studios don't  but jeez I wish they'd pay the right people to do better trailers.

In saying that, this is a type of movie that should do VERY well on DVD/Bluray and I suspect this will generate enough profit to warrant a sequel. I know after the first weekend, there was discussion there would be one but the numbers fell so sharply you have to think they'll wait for the DVD/BR sales to determine their next step.  This does have cult following written all over it.

Note that they are doing a sequel for the comic, that's a done thing.

I felt the concept was funny, but the movie never really was. Think the only time I laughed was during his first attempt at crime fighting. The last half hour or so was actually bordering on annoying.

Well I guess if you must look at it from a cult angle, an 11 year old girl slaughtering dozens of mafia goons could be seen as "funny" in a way. I thought it was more "ridiculous" than funny and was waiting for it to end.

It doesn't have to be funny though does it? I didn't get a hell of a lot of chuckles out of Spiderman, Batman or Iron Man. Still entertaining...

Yeah, like I said, I though the movie was entertaining, but I'm trying to understand what makes it so spectacular (10/10) for others.

I judge movies on:

Did they make the film they set out to make?
How well did they do it?
Was I entertained?
How many times did I glance at my watch?

What I don't do is compare movies to other movies. I'm not going to say, "Well, I gave this movie over here 9/10, so I can't give this one a ten"

Well, depictions of penetration are illegal in Oklahoma, so cussing little girls is the closest to filth ginsu can legally watch.

So you're happy with little girls being penetrated?

Yeah, who's the one with problems here?

Same reaction I had to what you brought up. Like the legality of penetration pr0n in this state matters when the internet's full of it.

Maybe the problem is that I don't remember her cussing. I guess I've seen too much South Park to still think that's hilarious.

Anyway, I did like the movie, but I wouldn't advice anyone (over 16) to go and see that movie nor would I watch it again. It's a bit like The Hangover. I liked that one also, but the humor is a bit weird.

It's an R-rated movie here (17 and up). Are you saying no one should see it?

Maybe some of the problems with the humor for you is just because of the cultural difference.

Ah well 17 then. I'm assuming the movie is aimed at teenagers.

Well I do like British humor and I loved Layer Cake (and it's weird humor). Again, I'm just not seeing this movie as a 10/10.

I know, but that doesn't stop me wondering what I missed :)

I was wondering how old the lead actor was. Turns out he's 21. He's married to the 43 year old Sam Taylor Wood (what's in a name). Wow.

Here's Ebert's summary on it and I agree with him:

"The early scenes give promise of an entirely different comedy. Aaron Johnson has a certain anti-charm, his problems in high school are engaging, and so on. A little later, I reflected that possibly only Nic Cage could seem to shoot a small girl point-blank and make it, well, funny. Say what you will about her character, but Chloe Grace Moretz has presence and appeal. Then the movie moved into dark, dark territory, and I grew sad. "

He also gave it one star, which was generous.

Oh the same guy who was bashing teens for wearing American flag t-shirts on Cinco De Mayo Day..

Ebert = 2 thumbs down..

So if a ten year old kid sees the movie, and the parents complain to some authority (congressman, cop whatever) the cinema can just say 'it's just a guideline'? There are no repercussions? Would that hold true if the ten year old saw a pornographic movie in a cinema?

Oh, and  i know what you mean when you say moran

I believe only the X rating has any sort of law associated with it. It might not even be a direct "cinema" related law, but indirectly you'd be guilty of corrupting a minor or something to that effect.

And of course, this varies by country, state/province, etc

If I remember it correctly, the repercussions come from the mpaa who will stop anyone from sending their movies to theaters who do not enforce the ratings system.

There is no 'X' rating.

 :whap

I think I read that there really was an X rating but that the MPAA didn't trademark it so it was heavily used by the porn industry (without MPAA approval) to promote their films.  That could be ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow---.  NC-17 is sort of the response.  It's been around only since the mid to late 90's if I remember right.
