First Control Panel
« on: March 03, 2010, 04:29:36 am »
So I have been working on this control panel and thinking about it for a long time. I've decided to compile my previous threads too.. just for reference.

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=99770.0 <-- recommendations on arcade cabs, beginner advice, layouts
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=100359.0<--me searching for cab ideas
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=100155.0<-- layout design and hybrid button layout

this is the overlay I'm thinking of using for this cp (thanks to delusional) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SKM1WHPT Can someone turn it into a photoshop file for me? I'd really appreciate it.

My cp will have no flight stick and  no track ball buttons (will use the 4 way joystick ones for that). And the admin button layout (and the reason you see those button surround on top) are as follows

players 1 coin and start on left
player 2 coin and start on right
exit, pause, favs, and genre button in the middle.  The genre button is in case I decide to use hyperspin.

The  p1 and p2 button layout will be as follows (thanks t3 design for sharing)

I changed Delusiona's layout a bit to make it fit my control panel better. The invader graphic looks better on this cp I think. Opinions?

Get your exit button as far away from your pause button as possible!

I think the design is pretty good,  maybe the boxes surrounding the start/coin and admin buttons can be a little tighter (less wide).

Personaly I would consider moving the spinner away from the trackball.

You realy dont want to crach into your spinner or anything else for that manner while playing Golden Tee. Thrust me on this one  ;D

Thanks!

Yeah I'm working on changing the buttons surrounds, but I'm pretty new to photoshop.

Any idea of a better place for the spinner?

Is the 4 way an absolute?  Have you considered a 4/8 switchable like the Mag Stik Plus?

If you omitted the 4-way, you could put the spinner where it would have been.

In other news....and in addition to what javeryh said, I've heard that the escape and pause buttons are often pressed accidentally when located above the trackball.

I think I want a dedicated 4 way joystick. As far as the exit and pause being pressed accidentally, well.. hmmm not sure what to do about that.  Unless I give player one escape and player 2 pause.  But the it'll look funny. Hmmm..

*edit* I also just realized that it's going to look funny with the street fighter color scheme.. any suggestions on colors? I'm thinking all white or all black.  Would anyone be interested in trading for blue and red buttons ? (they are happ buttons and I have both concave and the round ones).

I think the spinner location is just fine.  Especially if you are right handed.  You tend to arc left when rolling it hard for Golden Tee.  If you are a lefty... not as much, but I've had both types of people playing on my control panel and they've never hit it.  I have the same location.

Or you can leave it as is and make it a shifted button.  ie. Hold player 1 start and then the exit button.

This works great BUT you have to think of your audience - the more complicated you make something (even if it is extremely easy to you) the more annoying questions you will get.... or maybe all of my friends are morons... or drunk - that is a definite possibility.

I'm not crazy about the shade of blue for the boxes up on top.  Doesn't seem to match.  Try using the eyedropper to get a similar color.  A gradient may help too.

I was thinking something like this:

Cool that does look better. I'll give it a try.. just keep in mind this is my firs time doing this and working with photoshop. I can figure out what a tear dropper is.. but gradient? what's that? I also got those that surround thing on the squares randomly by messing around with the options.. I'll see if I can find it again.

I couldn't figure out the gradient thing... but I did make them see through. How can I add a gradient? can anyone help me out? Everytime I add a gradient it changes the shape from blue to black and gray shades.  =/
