TinyXP Rev10 Multi Boot 6 in 1 DVD - eXPerience 19.2.2010
« on: February 19, 2010, 06:37:42 am »
My favourite OS for Mame PC´s just got updated:

________________________________________________________________________

 eXPerience Presents...

 Windows XP Professional SP3 - February 2010
 ________________________________________________________________________

To boot from this DVD, set your PC up so it will boot
from the DVD drive in the PC's BIOS.
 ________________________________________________________________________

When you boot from this DVD you will see 6 options.

You have a choice of 3 different Windows installations:

 1. Full Windows XP (nothing is removed)
 2. TinyXP (large components removed, but usable for most)
 3. MicroXP (extremely small, only takes 221Mb of HDD space)

All three versions are updated to February 2010.

There are also three more boot options:

 4. Acronis True Image EES v9.7.8353 (Backup\Restore)
 5. Hiren's BootCD v10.1 (Includes Live Windows XP)
 6. SpinRite v6.1 (Hard Disk Testing and Repair)

 ________________________________________________________________________

All three choices include 22 different driverpacks, all are optional.

 Broadband (16.20 Mb)
 Chipset (11.50 Mb)
 CPU (148.00 Kb)

It's amazing how tweaked they got MicroXP's Ram usage. (Any of them, really) But just to think you could run XP with 48MB of ram is insane! Of course, you would couldn't run much more than Windows with that, but still...

Raitsa,

Since it is your favorite, can you share what Windows installation you use (1-3) and what boot options you use (1-3)?

WOW! I absolutely love Tiny XP! I didn't realize that eXperience was still working on this project.
I thought he/they had moved onto the newer windows versions. I had read somewhre that v.09 was the last.

Anyway, a follow up question to Raitsa: Why 02a over 03a?

Hey IG-88, no real reason but Tiny is not as heavily stripped as Micro is and Tiny has been my choice for so long i have hard time changing my habits.  :dunno

But for Mame use Micro would be as good a choice as Tiny i believe.

Well in all honesty I have used TinyXp on all my home pc's for quite awhile. Decided to "upgrade"  to Vista then to tiny7. I personally hate both and will be going back to TinyXp soon as tomorrow. I may try Micro but will definately put rev10 on this one. Thanks for the post!

I'm not sure but just a warning I think some specialty emulators like Chankast or PCXS2 may need a more full version of Windows as I believe the stripped versions take out alot of directX or other core files needed for advanced 3D stuff, but don't quote me on that. But for regular ol' MAME this should be more than enough.

Sorry for quoting you... quite literally.. LOL. I had the older Tiny XP and I always had problems with running i-Tunes, due to missing files.  However, this version works perfectly with it.  It also allows Direct X stuff to work just fine (so did my other older Tiny XP Beast Edition version though).  SF4 works great too.  The previous TinyXP (Beast Edition) that I had would run SF4, but the movies would play without sound.  Turns out I had to download WMP10 for it to work.  But this new version solves everything.

One thing I haven't tried in this new version is the text to voice stuff though.  Beast edition would not do it... period, even if I tried installing those components manually.

Can TinyXP and such be installed over an existing WindowsXP installation ?

I toyed with it briefly awhile back as new installations, but didn't do much with it.
I'd like to speed up and streamline my touchscreen game box system I'm building now, but really don't want to reinstall and configure everything again. (lots of tweaking)

Or any other suggestions to strip it down a little with an existing installation?

Nope. It specifically says it needs to be a clean install.

Can I put this TinyXP on a USB Thumb Drive and run it on my netbook?

How would I do that, just put it onto the USB drive instead of a DVD and then set my netbook to boot USB devices and I'm all set?  I don't need to install anything to a hard drive?

My cab computer keeps killing the C: drive.  It has crashed 2 harddrives in the last 6 months.  Luckily, all the emulators and MAME are on the secondary hard drive.  Can I use this program to just boot to the DVD drive and not worry about the c: drive?  Once the tinyxp is loaded, can you use the DVD drive for another disk?

I don't think TinyXP does that. You would need something like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_live_CDs#Microsoft_Windows-based

I have an older HP laptop that has an issue installing this. I select #2, it waits for a while, then it says 'biosinfo.inf is missing or corrupt....' I have not found anything online that has been able to fix the problem. I notice the OEM installation discs (7 that must all be done in order) are a special set. Would this have some affect?

Not sure if you can run an install on a USB drive. I would be intrested in seeing it done. Hell, just try it out and see if it will work. Maybe use a desktop with the USB drive installed and see if you can boot to it. I may have to fiddle with this tonite if I get time....

Have you tried any of the other options? Maybe a bad copy? I've had that happen before, tho not this specific issue.

For what its worth I've been running Micro on both this desktop and a new cab. Both have worked flawlessly.  :applaud: Thinking of "upgrading" all the PC's I have to this.

Trying the other options, even full XP, gives the same error. I used Nero to burn the disc as data. What are you using?

I also tried booting from an SD card, with both the ISO file and extracted components, but in either case, I get a blinking cursor screen with nothing else.

Perhaps you need the boot image? Do a search for 'Microsoft corporation.img'. You can set it as the boot image when you create a bootable CD in Nero.

Quote
a. Choose  CD-ROM (Boot) from the New Compilation’s Boot page.

b. Under Source of boot image data choose “Image file” and Browse to the c:\Microsoft Corporation.img.

c. Select Enable expert settings (for advanced users only) and set the following: Kind of emulation – No Emulation
Number of loaded sectors – 4
Load segment of sectors – 07C0 Click NEW.

d. File Browser area, navigate to c:\xp. Select all of the files inside of that directory and copy them over to the left side for burning.

e. Click BURN and you’re done once the CD is complete.

Slightly on topic: TinyXP 11 will be released in a few days :)

"Full = (currently @ 676Mb) Everything, fully updated, with IE8 and WMP11.

Slimmed (currently @ 532Mb) = Has Chinese, Korean and Japanese languages removed. A few other useless items are removed like Tour, MSN Explorer, but this slimmed version still has IE8 and WMP11, ability to do an upgrade install, Help & Support, it really has nothing taken out that could affect anyone, except for those 4 languages.

TinyXP (currently @ 260Mb) = I will keep this reasonable for usability, most stuff is kept and this loses its bloat because it has IE6 and WMP9 still, although it is going to be fully updated all the same. Theres work to do I guess putting the various IE (this time IE6) hotfixes back in lol.

MicroXP (currently @ 132Mb but I am to get that down nearer to 100Mb) = It will be just like the last one (nothing is added, nothing is removed) but updated to the time of release."

I do not know about this.....instead, I created an iso for CD from one of the batch files, and in Nero used 'burn image to disc'. However, nothing happens when booting up - nothing from the disc - and then I get the infamous 'missing NTLDR'.

How is everyone else creating discs, DVD or CD?

I sorted this out. In the case of the DVD, I creatd a data disc using extracted files. In the case of the CD, I did not have the iso mounted in a virtual drive, and the DVD did not reference properly, so the CD was missing the I386 folder.

I got magiciso, mounted the main iso, used the batch file to create a tinyXP+driver packs iso, and then in Nero used 'burn image to disc'. Put the disc in the laptop, it went right into the recovery panel, and I installed Windows. Yay. I like the new default desktop image and darker blue scheme.

The laptop is a Pentium M 1.7ghz with only 386mb of memory. It boots into Windows in 30 seconds or less and seems to run very fast now. The only gripe I have is the quick launch will not show up. It seems permanently off.

Incidentally, I am also having trouble setting up a network. It stops and says there was an error and can not finish. So I can not transfer files from another computer.

I use TinyXp; I have been able to connect to other computers on my network but can't enable file sharing to allow other computers to connect to the machine running TinyXP...

But I am a Mac guy normally, so I  just chalked it up to my Widoze cluelessness.

Haven't had any problems with any of my mice.

Are you using Simple File Sharing? I find with Windows you usually have to setup a folder to share before you can access the PC from another PC in your network. Try right clicking on a folder and enabling sharing.

Yes, I did that. Then I tried to set up a network again. Still no. I do not think it is the installation, because I have re-installed at least twice on each machine already.

Hey IG-88, no real reason but Tiny is not as heavily stripped as Micro is and Tiny has been my choice for so long i have hard time changing my habits.  :dunno

But for Mame use Micro would be as good a choice as Tiny i believe.

I just installed the Micro version (incl: Chipset, CPU and USB drivers) on the following hardware:

Motherboard: Via EPIA MII 1,2 Ghz
Memory: 512 MB
Harddrive: 40 GB Toshiba 2,5" laptop drive

Mame (0.135u2 + hiscore diff) runs just fine.

Power-on to to Front End takes approx 40 sec.

I'm going to try this on a netbook with no CD/DVD drive
Can you load it from a usb drive?
and how exactly would you do that?

Depends on if your computer will let you boot from the USB drive. I would assume that a netbook would. You should be able to set that in the bios. If it will then I see no reason why it wouldn't work. Toughest part would be getting the .iso onto the USB drive correctly.

Well... I've never attempted it. I usually just burn the .iso to a cd. Not sure how to do that to a usb drive. You could just try to "cut & paste" it off the cd onto the drive but I have a feeling that wont work. Did you get your bios set to boot from a usb?

EDIT  ****Sorry**** Just re-read your post.  :-[   That should work if you can get your bios set right.

Slightly on topic: TinyXP 11 will be released in a few days :)

"Full = (currently @ 676Mb) Everything, fully updated, with IE8 and WMP11.

Has this been released?  I did a search for TinyXp 11 but didn't see anything.  No big deal, I can get Rev10, just wanted to make sure I had the latest one!

Thanks!

Windows XP 2003 Multi-Boot DVD x86 June 2010 - eXPerience
was released 18.7.2010.

"This DVD includes 8 Windows installations and 2 extra boot options...

 1) Install Full XP (with IE8 and WMP11) June 2010
 2) Install Slimmed XP (with IE8 and WMP11) June 2010
 3) Install TinyXP (with IE6 and WMP9) June 2010
 4) Install MicroXP (without IE or WMP) June 2010

 5) Install Full 2003 (with IE8 and WMP11) June 2010
 6) Install Slimmed 2003 (with IE8 and WMP11) June 2010
 7) Install Tiny2003 (with IE6 and WMP10) June 2010
 8) Install Micro2003 (without IE or WMP) June 2010

 9) Boot Acronis (Backup & Restore partitions)
 0) Boot Hiren\'s BootCD v10.6 (Live Windows XP)"

 ________________________________________________________________________

 - Full XP
This has most of the required hotfixes slipstreamed with nLite,
other odd hotfixes that cannot be slipstreamed (for example KB890830)
are installed on first logon. This also includes IE8 and slipstreamed
 WMP11 with all hotfixes.

 - Slimmed XP
Same as above with WMP11 slipstreamed, but this has a few items
removed, the only item that might be needed is Chinese, Japanese
and Korean. The only other items removed are redundant items like
 the Windows XP \"Tour\".

 - TinyXP
This aims to remove only the big components in Windows. Its smaller
size comes not from taking out items, but by simply not updating
to IE8 or WMP11 and instead, updating the OS the same way to June
2010 but with IE6 and WMP9 like the original XP. You will only see
one Windows Update appear for this on Windows Update - \"Internet
 Explorer 8\"

 - MicroXP
This is, as usual, stripped right down to the bare OS almost.

That seems a bit slow - My regular Windows 7 Core 2 Duo machine takes 28 seconds from power off to front end. You must be running Hyperspin...

No, I run mameWah.

I doubt that you can compare the two machines. Keep in mind the VIA EPIA MII processor is a rather "old" processor. Once it's up an running, games like Pac-Man, Bomb Jack and Bubble Bobble runs fine but games like Metal Slug isn't playable (it runs, but very slow).

Yes, I did that. Then I tried to set up a network again. Still no. I do not think it is the installation, because I have re-installed at least twice on each machine already.

I know I'm attempting to revive a dead thread but I was wondering if you ever did get TinyXP networked? I don't need internet, just to be able to connect to my other PC's and I haven't been able to do that yet.
