Compiling older versions will be more problematic as the official build tools have been changed periodically and often older source trees with the recent compile tools don't work.  The mamedev.org site only details the current tools - so anything prior you'll likely need superceeded compile packages which may be hard to find.   That's my experience with compiling anyway.

ummm... try www.mame.net

FYI mame.net is kaput. mamedev.org is the website now. There are no forums there.
Old, but not obsolete.

Bad info dude..... Mamedev.org and mame.net are the same site.... have been for about 3 years now.  Of course there aren't any forums.  You click on the "how to compile" link.

Of course you know, you could have avoided this embarrassing mistake if you had just clicked on the link I gave.  :)

My info is accurate.

But HeadKazes compiler is the way to go anyway (IMO).
Old, but not obsolete.

I'm not gonna lie it took me a while to figure it out myself.  Once I got it done I swore I'd never update it.

Like 20 versions of mame later I did it again with no problems.

I recommend the auto compile tool, that someone recommended above, but I forget the name of it.

Good Day.

I've been trying to roll my own mame now for a few days.

Trying to compile 137.u4 with no nag and high scores. But all i get is this after about 6 minutes:

src/mame/drivers/pgm.c:4726: error: 'driver_init_dw3' was not declared in this scope
src/mame/drivers/pgm.c:4726: error: too many initializers for 'const game_driver'
src/mame/drivers/pgm.c:4727: error: 'driver_init_dw3' was not declared in this scope
src/mame/drivers/pgm.c:4727: error: 'rom_drgw3k' was not declared in this scope
src/mame/drivers/pgm.c:4727: error: too many initializers for 'const game_driver'
src/mame/drivers/pgm.c:4434: warning: 'void driver_init_drgw3(running_machine*)' defined but not used
make: *** [obj/windows/mame/mame/drivers/pgm.o] Error 1
Finished!

Also, does this app output a mame.exe? cause if it does, i cant find it, or will it not appear because it errored?

Cheers for your help.

Can't we just download a version with no nag and high scores? I mean that is all anyone really uses right?
