Knievel's Ms Pac-Man Cabinet
« on: October 30, 2007, 01:12:09 pm »

Quick post to show off the Ms Pac-Man machine I just finished for my kids.

This was one rough cabinet when I found it. It had been converted to a Magic Sword and painted grey, lots of damage to the sides and corners.
But with a little love (and a lot of Bondo) I turned it into something I'm proud to have in our gameroom.

How it looked when I got it..

And how it looks now..

A few misc build pics..

Damn where do you find the time for these awesome projects? Its not bad enough that you crank them out in a day or two, but they are also superior to 99% of everyone elses stuff!

Awesome!

I know you've been trying to get one, so it's good to see it all come together for you. Great handiwork there too.

So is that stenciled, or a clear vinyl overlay?

I totally agree!  The craftsmanship is just amazing.

Is it a dedicated Ms. Pac or did you throw in a bunch of joystick only games?

Thanks guys! The kids were playing it last night and loving it. :)

The side/front art are full pieces that include the blue areas. I just painted the entire cabinet blue because I wanted to make use of the can of paint I bought.

I'm running a 39-in-1 board, you can kinda see one of the menu screens in the first pic. Good selection of games and pretty much bullet-proof for the kids. ;)

I got the new bezel and marquee for it off ebay, they are both plexiglass and look great.

I altered the CPO to cover the entire CP, never liked that black section on the front. Lost the black kick-plate on the bottom too. Never liked it either but I understand how you would need it in an arcade setting.

Yes I assumed so after seeing you mention it in your thread. ;)

I actually bought mine some time ago.
He was only doing Ms Pac-Man then and was considering doing the regular Pac next.

Biggest mistake I ever made was looking at your projects.  Now my dilusional expectations of my own work are set so high that I will never be satisfied with my own projects.....cause I'm just not nearly as good as you.

Thanks, I really can't take much credit for this one though. It is an original midway cabinet of course. :)
Guess I did make the CP myself, out of some 5/8" MDF.

I would like to thank whoever uploaded the Ms Pac-Man CP overlay to the AAL, I didn't recognize the name. Without it I wouldn't have been able to make my modified version.

Just one question. I'm trying to judge how much you suck  ;D

What was the amount of time it took to go from the crappy first pic to the glorious end product? Please say three years, and not three days / weeks ... please  :P

Well..I'm just a *little* north of you. :)

I will attempt to upload the CPO to the AAL, never done it before though.

I've actually had this cabinet for almost a year. I was slowly gathering parts for it as the deals came up on eBay. It probably took a few days to actually put it all together, the repair work was time consuming.

Yes I wrapped the art around the edges and then ironed them down, with a small covering iron I had from my model airplane days. From what I've seen most people just cut the sideart flush with the edge. I think wrapping it around is cleaner and there's no chance of snagging it and pulling the artwork back.

Just curious about that covering iron thing...  what does that do?  Does it shrink the vinyl to fit around the edge?

I'm getting ready to wrap my steering control panel in fabric-backed vinyl to emulate a dashboard and wondering if this technique would work for me.

The iron shrinks it tight around the edge and makes the adhesive really bond.

My brother is building a Woody right now and we covered it with the Parts Express vinyl last weekend. He used the covering iron to seal all the edges and then went over the sides with a full-sized iron wrapped in a shirt.

The end result was the nicest finish I've ever seen on an arcade cabinet.

That's exactly the stuff I'm using.  Never tried this before, though.  I have a few questions if you don't mind sharing some tips:

1)  What's a good adhesive to use with the Parts Express vinyl?
2)  What did you do to wrap the corners to avoid the vinyl bunching up?
3)  If the edges of the panel are hidden by the sides of the cabinet (i.e no T-molding), would you wrap the edges all the way to the back of the panel or still trim to the middle like you did with MsPac?
4)  If you didn't have a covering iron, could you still pull this off with a standard iron and/or a soldering iron?

Thanks again!

Yup it works great.

Answers to Dmod's questions..
1) No extra adhesive, just peel and stick..then iron
2) I made relief cuts on the corners, plus the iron will smooth everything down
3) All the way to the back I suppose.
4) You could probably do it with a full-size iron, using the tip for most of it. A covering iron probably costs around $20 though.

BTW the Woody cabinet side is less than 24" wide so the parts express stuff worked without a seam.
If you've got a cabinet side wider than that you could go with Happ's Pica vinyl, it comes in a 48" width.
Of course it's a lot more expensive, but also a little nicer quality as well.

Oh yea, big time. I'm still into it, just small electrics now though.

Being able to walk out into the yard and fly a plane was always a dream of mine. And new technology, mainly Li-Po batteries, has made it a reality.

I'll be buzzing the livingroom this winter with some real micro stuff.
This place is eating up a lot of my money these days :)..

That's all that I would fly around here...the electrics. My next project (started over a year ago!) that I'm finishing is an electric with my digital camera on board. I can't wait to see this place from the air. This plane flew only once and showed signs of instability (wing incidence or???). I didn't bother again flying it again. I did get some shots on the first flight (how brave of me). The plane is a scratch built plane called the Magpie.

Did you close up those wingtips before you flew?

Nope...I've never closed a wing tip in on a straight wing. I don't expect much lift is lost if any at all. A straight wing produces (as far as I'm concerned) equal lift anywhere along the span. If it was tapered and drag was a consideration then yes. Sometimes drag add's lift. Here speed is not needed...just lift. I think in total the plane and camera all up weight was something like 42 ounces (just over 2.6 lbs). Wings like this are common amongst RC builders called 'SPADS' or Simple Plastic Airplane Design. I'm a Spadder.   ;)
