trackball & spinner problem w/opti-PAC

This is my first install of a trackball/spinner w/opti-PAC.  I can't seem to get these devices to work with missile command, tempest and centiped.  I can control the mouse pointer in windows with them though.

Any ideas.  Thanks ahead of time.

Did you enable the mouse in mame?
if using mame it's in the ini file.  If using mame32 it's in an option window.
