Routing for T-Molding

Hi Everybody  ,

If im using 15mm MDF board for the said of an arcade cabinet, and I intend to T-Mold the edges, I understand I need to use a router for this, which my dad has.

Can anybody please tell me what router 'bit' I need to purchase to create the groove in the MDF?

Im not exactly sure of the thickness of the T-Molding piece which locks into the wood, but it looks around 3mm? so if that's the case, the router bit needs to leave 6mm, then gouge out a 3mm section?

I am not a wood-work person at all, so apologies if this question looks dumb.

There are several different thickness bits, depending on the specific t-molding you are installing.

Most varieties require a 1/16" slot cutter, but some call for a 0.080" to 3/32" bit -- check the website you ordered the t-molding from.



If you can't tell for sure, post a link to the type you ordered.

The bits are usually available at the same place you bought the molding from.

What you are looking for is a 3 Wing Slot Cutter Router Bit. There are many places to get them. I happen to have purchased a couple from MCLS and haven't had any issues. As PL1 mentioned you need to get the specs from the place you purchased to know what thickness of bit you need.

There's a bit of this?  I always put on leather gloves and did it by hand with a hacksaw blade.

I have a quick question, I ordered some 3/4" t-molding from twistedquarter.com with some other stuff.  It says that the spine is 3/32" with the barbs, but they sell a bit that is 1/16" and says "use with 3/32" spine t-molding".  I plan on buying my slot cutter bit elsewhere, should I get a 1/16" bit, or 3/32"?  Here is the t-molding I purchased:

You need 1/16.  The slot has to be smaller than the spine so it will be griped tightly when the t molding is installed.
