Lets watch Malenko fix up a Faster Than Speed!
« on: October 13, 2014, 02:15:07 pm »
So I traded my UMK3 and Bad Dudes for a Faster than Speed cab. Good news is my fiancee (wife in 2 weeks!) likes it:

Heres the good:
Its playable
Monitor has a pretty good picture on it
monitor was recently capped
Monitor is a Tri-Sync.
Cabinet is in really good shape
Coin mechs work, and I have keys to the locks! (first cab that came with keys!)

heres the bad:
Cab is dirty, really dirty (inside and out)
pots on the brake/wheel/gas need replaced, but are ok for now.
Tmodling is hurtin
Marquee is thrashed, held together with hope and friction
Monitor has pretty bad "Faster than Speed" burn-in, right in the middle of the screen.
diamond plate flooring is gross.
holes near the coin area where lock down bar was installed
art near shift and start button need replaced.

Heres a slightly better shot of what Im dealing with:

I decided to start small and just work on the diamond plate. Here is a pic after I gave it the once over, and before I soaked it in dish soap in my guest bathroom tub:

and here it is, post cleaning and scrubbing, reinstalled:

I also replaced the machine screws with lath screws. I just like the look better.

After that I decided to keep it simple and just touch up the tmolding.  In time this will get replaced, but its not in the budget right now, so quick touch up it is.
before:

and after I taped it all over and hit it with a shot of silver metallic spray paint.  The spray isnt super durable, and isnt quite as shiny as the original molding, but it'll do for now:

Done but not pictured is: I bought a Maximum Speed cart and I tinted the monitor glass to help hide the burn in.

Smart man. I hope that a-hole who is supposed to help you with the marquee gets off his ass and gets that thing scanned for you.  :soapbox:

Is that seat adjustable? My legs are cramping up just looking at that picture.

Ok, I'm glad someone else noticed that.  I was worried I was imagining that she looked folded up to fit.

apparently you have never seen an asian woman drive.  Shes like that in a real car too. As Yots said, seat slides all the way back.

Not everybody has legs up to the ceiling fan.... (Jenn rolls her eyes) ::)....Is that a bill accepter down by where your left foot goes? Kinda hard to see in the picture. If so that's a fun option on that sweetie.

No DBV, just a single happ coin mech. Game is on FreePlay anyway.

minor update, I replaced the 4 T30 security Torx screws that hold the dash onto the sides of the cab, replaced them with philips head 1/4"-20  1-1/2" machine screws.  In order to get the Torx screws out, I had to drill out the dimple then massage the screw out.I like the replacements much better and the bright silver kinda pops.   I also replaced numerous screws inside the cab with lath screws instead of hexhead screws.

Dont let the sticker tears fool ya, they sit flush.

So before continuing work on the outside, I decided to get the inside squared away.

BEFORE:

and AFTER:

Tidied up the wiring and wiped down EVERYTHING. I was going to rotate the Atomiswave board so the JAMMA edge connector faced the front, but it was not going to be worth the work required to do so. Still waiting on a guy to send me the marquee scan so I can get that replaced, but next up is removing the rest of the lock down bar stuff so I can patch the holes.

6 months later.....

The CRTs age is really starting to show, its got some convergence issues and the colors just arent as bright as they used to be despite the recent cap kit.

Since Atomiswave motherboards have VGA out, I figured I'd see what a LCD monitor looked like compared to the arcade monitor (arcade monitor is a tri-sync running 640x480)

It was so much better looking on the LCD, I just had to swap them out. In the picture above its only a 23" LCD, I ended up replacing the CRT with a 28" LED LCD. This allowed me to keep the same monitor bezel and only lose about an inch of vertical screen.

monitor base is screwed into the bottom piece of wood:

and here it is behind the monitor glass and everything:

Next up is prolly replacing the pots on at least the gas and steering, brake is fine because you rarely ever use the damn thing.

Do you have a gap there on the horizontal plane?

Not sure what the question is :/

The monitor bezel would be visible above the plastic bezel of the arcade, if the glass wasnt tinted. The picture just looks like its floating against a black background. I adjusted the image width so that it lines up exactly with the old monitor bezel.

If I take the back off , you can see the edges of the monitor. I need to mask the marquee light along the top but its been 7 months and I still cant find a replacement or a way to make a replacement due to the funny shape of the marquee....I already have the art printed for it :/

That picture does look nice. I don't recall ever seeing that game in the wild.
