And to start off, something that's still a little exotic:
Fishbone - all-black, originally funk, etc-oriented but that in the early 90s branched out to some tasty metallic stuff:

Maidens got some nice stuff... but is it really Metal??? More like Operatic Rock.
Now... heres something that actually raises your Pulse:

And finally, one of my favorite lesser known songs they do:

(picks up heavily in mid song ! :) )
-
Sounds really weird for them to go from Holy Wars into Mechanix instead of The Punishment Due. The jam at the end of Punishment Due is one of my all time favorites.

Well, for those (like myself) who tended to listen to whole albums in general, yeah.
Also, notice I spelled it in caps. Metal is Priest, an Maiden, etc. METAL is anything from Metallica onward - but doesn't include suck albums like Countdown to Extinction, the Black album, The Ritual.....
And now, for anotha:

So its metal unless its METAL, unless of course it's not METAL or metal?
Hell of a system you have there.
-
I can't believe I agree with Xiaou2 on something. Rust in Peace is one of my favorite albums on all time. I really like Marty Friedman's contribution to that album, being a fan of his solo work, Cacophony, and his stuff on Jason Becker's solo albums. I'll be putting some other METAL videos up soon...

I'm just curious how this system works when you're having a real conversation with someone. Do you have to yell METAL everytime you say it? Otherwise the other person might get confused and think you're talking about metal. And what happens when your yelling something about metal at someone because they're far away? Seems like they would be forced to think you're talking about METAL.
-
lol w/ Atomsmasher.
Sorry man, I like a few Maiden tunes (but really cant take too much of that
Opera Voice singing & religious stuff) ... but they simply are Not metal to me.
Its almost like calling Kiss metal! At one time people may have thought the
Beatles were hardcore... and if they were labeled metal back then... that
title would surely have to be revised today...
And as much as MDs Old tunes, I find I listen to Countdown much more
often. It has 2 somewhat generica songs on it which made it to radio (and
are OK) ... but the rest are rockin hardcore. The best part is that they really
found the best EQ setting for Daves voice... which in previous older albums was
too high.
Metallica's black was ok. I used to like their old stuff.. but I rarely listen to it
anymore. Its just not really repeatedly enjoyable like MD is.

HEHN. Actually, I just right people on things. Let 'em know that metal is before Metallica, and that METAL is essentially thrash and some speed metal. Slayer has always been METAL, even with Reign in Blood despite its punk elements. That Fishbone above is definitely METAL in the sense that the guitars are palm-muting, the rhythm is thrashy, and the drumming is sorta thrash-like. They're also a little more than that.
Sorry TOK. Independent is the Reich album that jumped the shark. Or, rather, it blows because it's rock. Started with the Black album, and then spread out into everyone except Slayer. And then of course, bringing up the rear with the guidon were Pantera and Sepultura.
That Machine Head stuff and later things are METAL, yes, but during or after its demise, so they're sort of like bastard children.
Not a great band, but definitively METAL. Note the riffing and heavy kick drum, as well as kick triplets.

I bet just coincidence. It's quite common in tertian music, and was actually a common thing in composers to borrow from each other.

I don't think it's necessary - BUT, the link to that has been helpful in that I'll revise my system to be 'Heavy Metal' and 'Metal', respectively.
By the way, I notice it says 'Embedding disabled by request' when I click on the Fishbone 'Servitude' video. Is that through here, as in someone here complained and Saint or another mod did that?

Sorry, Frizz. Though that music is related, this isn't a death metal thread. Besides, you didn't post any good Obituary, and there just isn't any good Deicide or CC.
But here's something sorta in-between:

.....hey....what happened to youtube embedding? I had to manually set this one.

Kreator rocked... and I listen to "metal"... I try not to pay attention to the 5 million sub-genres... and Deicide kicks your ass...

Here...here's a great thrash band...

All German BTW...good stuff!

HELL YEAH!!!
Now I'm gonna have to crack out my Machine Head CD's tonight. Saw them twice back in 99-2000. First one was on an all-concrete amphitheater right on the river - INSANE!!! I was a few rows back from the mosh pit, and it was a brutal one. Rob jumped from a stack about 15 feet up from the crowd at the end. "You ---smurf---'s better catch me!" Best. Concert. EVAR!!
Saw them a few months later in a bar that only holds a few hundo fans. I was exhausted after that one for sure. Had some hot chick that was grinding up against me all night too. Was pretty damn sweet. Awesome Rob moment #2, he threw his cup of Gin and Tonic to some dude up in the balcony over the stage...and made it intact.
It's too bad what happened with Supercharger around 9/11. There went any chance of me ever seeing them live again. Good to see they are huge overseas though.
-
...I actually tracked a couple Machine Head tunes...
-
How about this one. Sepultura Arise

Edit: Don't know why the google video doesn't auto embed. It does when I preview the post. I tried youtube, nothing but live versions (not as good imo)

metal is progressive with each generation it pushes us more towards edge of darkness.
-
Hm, I hadn't actually listened to it the first time around....that Machine Head sounds kinda weak.
Sodom surely counts - but I never liked 'em.
metal is progressive with each generation it pushes us more towards edge of darkness.
Um. Whatever that means.
Second, anything with goofy synth sounds in it is doom/black metal. That stuff doesn't even belong here.
Lastly, 'progressive' is a non-word in metal. People throw it around without even knowing what it means to themselves. Progressive how?...harmonically?...rhythmically?...formally (as in the structure of the piece) ? In the early 90s, I would call things 'progressive', but I realised I couldn't really explain what I meant. I was correct, however, because in the context, they were somewhat harmonically, rhythmically, and structurally progressive (particularly tracks from Sepultura's Arise). I didn't have the vocabulary to explain why, but I understood what I was hearing.
How about this one. Sepultura Arise

Only Youtube automatic embedding is...or was...available, but apparently not in this thread anymore. Don't think other formats embed at all.
Dude, you could put that whole album up here - but my favorite is Desperate Cry......EH. Damn live versions. Ehn, this'll have to do:

I lose track of all the categories, but I always took Progressive to mean bands that were more experimental with timing and used a wider variety of instruments.
Dream Theater would be the most obvious example I could think of.
I can tell people in this thread will say "They're not metal", but there seems to be a trend here of only calling what you like metal. Dream Theater played Master Of Puppets start to finish on stage, doing a better job of it than Metallica, so they definitely have metal chops.
-
metal is progressive with each generation it pushes us more towards edge of darkness.
it means that with each generation metal is pushed forward by new sounds and darker content. metal music in general pushes the envelope on every instrument that it can be played on.
-
Arise was my first Sepultura album. It's my favorite.
I saw Sepultura / Ozzy / Black Sabbath back in 1992 I think it was. Sepultura was really out of place...but I completely dug on them.

Yeah, I saw that tour, too, in San Diego. I stayed for the whole thing, but I didn't really care about the rest of the show after Sepultura. Especially with popcul music, I really prefer recorded. Live is messy and in metal they always play it really fast, and....blech.

DT certainly has chops. They easily can play metal, it's just that they're inherently more of a rock band. And, yes, they've played around with meter (vs time), but it's mostly monophonic in approach, and even harmonically they haven't really gone very far.

Not really. Just seems to for those who aren't familiar with much older music.
And, today's offering, good old-school thrash-punk:

Yup, that's what I head way back when. Both good, though I think I prefer MOD, especially their last album (or maybe only later album?....I didn't keep up)....Hey, that's Scott Ian. I forgot he was in that band. He was definitely the speedster back then. And, hey, nice interlude into part of Reigning Blood. HAHN.
And for today, some good 'ol:
(Great combination of Dave's riffs and lyrics/vocals and killer Chris Poland leads.)

A great band - at least this album is great - the rest I don't care for:

Ah, here's a good oldie. One they never played in the three shows I went to, unfortunately.

4 Of A Kind is one of my favorite albums ever. Lots of fast jamming and minimal lyrics and the way some of the songs run into each other makes it feel like they recorded the whole thing in one shot.
I have all of DRI's albums, but think this is the best one by far. I wore the cassette out, replaced it, then bought it again on CD.
Manifest Destiny and Modern World off this album are also great.
-
Totally, man. Well, mostly, in that I agree with your sentiments, in particular on those two songs. I couldn't get into any of the other albums besides Definition, which to me seemed a modern or perhaps mature return to the kind of stuff on Four of a Kind.
Shut Up was one of my favorites, though. In '91 or 2 I made a shirt using fabric paint that had D.R.I stenciled on the left breast, and on the back stenciled 'WHAT ARE YOU DEAF?', with the mosh dude logo stenciled via a template I made myself out of manilla folder, with 'SHUT UP' below that. Black shirt, purple paint. I don't remember what happened to that.
And, today's mindful offering. An AZ band, just after Newstead left, and arguably their best album:

And, only somewhat for reasons of convenience, another Flots track from the same album (by the way, auto-embedding is back in this thread) :

I just happened to be listening to this on Youtube and noticed they've gone stereo. Nice. So I thought I'd post this....perhaps again.....because it's, like, metal. But it's progressive.

I just wanted to mention that Iron Maiden is NOT operatic metal or whatever the ---fudgesicle---. They were right there alongside Priest, Saxon, etc in the early days, and only by Seventh Son of a Seventh Son were they getting really thematically into things in some 'dramatic' fashion. Even then, they were still metal, and becoming eclipsed by thrash metal.

Those absolutely do not belong in here, even the Friedman/King and Darrel ones. Far better to make your own thread.
By the way, the tail-end percussion in Belly of the Beast is an allusion to ---smurfing--- Mission:Impossible.

Maybe you're too young. Also, most people severely confuse rhythm with meter. And, lastly, besides doom being gay, it doesn't belong in this thread.

First off, ingwee is ---smurfin--- cheese. Second, lick stuff is just, indeed as you mentioned, wank stuff. And, lead/solo stuff is very contrived* and not true to the metal vein at all. It's wannabe, 'I'm showing my great cock' stuff.
*Satriani's first two albums being only minor exceptions, though they ain't metal.
And with that, I'm going to post (or re-post??) a new uploading (NOW IN STEREO) of one of my pieces. That's metal. I suppose. (And what the ---fudgesicle--- happened to auto-embedding again?)

Rising Force is one of the greatest guitar albums ever. The rest of his stuff....meh, but that one is a classic.

Classic only to electric guitarists.
And, sort of on that note: (although, I have to say, I always thought the hair swinging deal was kinda gay)

First of all Immortal is black METAL, not doom. They're fast, furious, brutal, just like real metal should be, unlike your :lame: choices. Maybe you thought of Paradise Lost or My dying bride (those bands would be doom.) You never specified you referring to HEAVY METAL. And if anyone is guilty of posting to wrong threads, it's YOU! Fishbone metal!? Please! You might as well post Celine Dion.
And as to being young, I just wish. Let's just say I was teen when bands like metallica, megadeath and iron maiden were starting out. But while you got stuck in spandex and hair spray era I have progressed with the time.

Doom and black metal are from the same cast. They're both gay. Second, there's Metal, and death metal - some of the latter of which is actually deserving of the designation Metal. And you apparently didn't understand, or you missed, some of the middle portion of the thread. I'm an aesthete, yo. I define metal. You merely (might) listen to it.

hahahahahaha dude you're either really "funny" or you got ego the size of Hindenburg. You define metal? You're an aesthete? I understand you have some credentials to back those statements? Oh, you dont? Then your opinion means precisely squat doesn't it?
Anyway further proof of black METAL greatness (something you have no idea about) a proof that black metal achieved what others hope. Through music they are able to create visual representation of the musics meaning that only classical music was able to achieve. Sure it's dark, demonic, evil, etc who cares, the point is they made music that no one makes mistakes as to what it's meaning is unlike other generes' nice catchy, pleasant, meaningless plim-plums.

Minor keys, cheesy synth sounds, and wannabe syncopation in the percussion. I'm not sayin it's bad. Just unremarkable. Implied here are some of my credentials, mimic. But, you're a man so the only say-so is your own.

Dude, you need to go back and read how I de-bunked that idea. Utterly. And, again, there is a death metal thread. This ain't even Heavy Metal. It's just METAL.

hahaha again @ the guy above me, with his "de-bunking" theory.

Old man's child awful? Ah c'mon it's so dark, moody & grotesque those 2 voices evil and evil"-er" as in battling over someones soul :) and Yeah, production maybe not the best but what do you expect from a poor underground band.
What amazes me that black metal bands sound unintelligible and yet if you look up lyrics and start reading as they sing all of a sudden it's like a decoding book has been opened and you're able to decypher the meaning of those unholly growls. Also what is noteworthy they almost don't use profanities.

The Puzzling Constellation Of A Deathrune
[Voice:] "...The Soulside Awakes...Closing Down the Flesh..."
Upwards a Shimmering Nightsky of far so Distant Starlight
Above the Obsolete Horizonlines Death Came to Reap
Towards the Cosmic Hillsides Beyond the Lunar Galaxy
Closing Down the Fleshworld Forever as the Soulside Awakes
Whirling Down a Maelstrom of Horror Infernal
Possessed by the Grim and Bleak Eyes of the Seventh Moon
Breathing the Rippeling Rythm of the Coldest Night
Through Shadows Hearses Must be Led Across
The Puzzling Constellation of a Deathrune
The Ancient Sign of Magic Divine and Flamboyance Burning
Old Dusty Thresholds and Rusty Gateways Unentered (and) Unseen
A Spiritpath in the Thirteenth Dimension Cursed for Evilcraft
Obstreperous Skyways of Nightfall Ornaments
Cloudrealm Corridors of Miles and Miles with Mist
Solarlight Trapped into the Blackest Corner of Universe
The Darkened Space Enthroned and Time is Moving Backwards...
Breathing the Rythm of the Coldest Night
An Ancient Sign of Magic Divine
A Darkened Dungeon for the Pale I Seek
A Spiritpath for the Thirteenth Soul
The Sky is Raised from a Nightfall Dream
By the Bodies with their Souls in Black
Burning Close in the Cryptic Night
Rip Young Hearts out in the Fields of Light
Horror Infernal - The Seventh Moon - The Coldest Night
Her World Described - The Deathruler's Sign
Flamboyance Burning - An Ancient Deathcry
[Voice:] "Old Dusty Thresholds and Rusty Gateways
Unentered (and) Unseen...
Obstreperous Skyways of Nightfall Colours
Oblivious to a Spiritpath Breathing of Doom..."

The Eclipse Of Infernal Storms
The gate rose before him
In stood there open wide
A bloodstained portal of might
His travel to the land unknown
I awakened from this dismal dream
the same as thousand times before
This sight is so impure
So filled with mourning and with grace
It cries a message to me
of which I cannot ever grip
A man and this enermous gate
with his name on it written in blood...
I fall to me kness
Spelling my name
to be unleashed, and ever blessed
The great beyond lies open in front of me
I could see the gate
rise before my eyes
With a freezing smile
I entered the reign of death
I could see the truth
like an open book
And then I knew
what I had become
I awakened from the dismal dream
The threshold to the dead
I've passed this enormous gate
with my name on it written in blood...
In blood... I fall to me knees
Spelling my name
to be unleashed, and ever blessed
The great beyond lies open in front of me
