Title: Spam: email addresses harvested from arcadecontrols.com
Post by: mblitch on December 22, 2008, 08:11:44 am
I just received my first spam message that is associated with arcadecontrols.com. For every website registration I ever make, I create a unique email address so that I may always know from where anyone got my address when sending correspondence. I just received an unsolicited marketing email (SPAM) from some Romanian company. It seems they must have harvested user profiles or forum messages here and obtained my address from posts I made mid-2008. I'm including some of the portions below and have mentioned it here in case others got the same thing and did have an idea of why they may have received it.

Got mine today too. Knew I shouldn't have sold everyone's email for a handful of magic beans...

(BYOAC is big enough that if you have your email publically viewable it's going to get harvested. Nothing I can do about that, sorry folks)

Hmm, let's see....

My email has been hidden all this time, and.....looky there.....no spam.

Imagine that.

Anyone who puts their email addy out there is just asking for it.

the admins should change the forum default to be hidden email address. there's no reason not to.

I am the forum admin :)  There is no option to default to hidden. The only option I have available to me is to allow users to hide their email, and that is enabled.

I use a pretty damn good email filter. I just checked a few minutes ago and it had 799 messages in there. Of course I haven't flushed it in months so it's about 30 days worth of crap.

One thing that some sites have that is nice is a sort of email proxy in place. eBay does something similar (I can think of some improvements to eBays but it's a start) In other words, emails are never exposed until communication is initiated. The receiver gets the senders revealed email and communication can continue via direct email.

The only thing is that some server admins hate it when websites send out emails so it takes a bit of voodoo to send the emails out. Something to look into.  :dunno

You could also do what I do.  Use an email address specifically for signing up for websites.  I don't care if spam gets sent to that one then.
